What is an application form?• Document used to:

• Keep track of everyone that applies for a job.• Compare qualifications and screen people out.

• Yes or No pile:• Follows instructions• Accurate and neat• Qualified for the position

Why is an application form so important?• First impression, without face-to-face contact• Along with your resume, determines whether you

get an interview

Filling out the form ASAP• At location (electronic or paper)

• Dress to impress (in case of an immediate interview)• Fast results• Get a feel for the place and people• Serious, eager, and responsible• Won’t risk losing, washing, or forgetting it. (paper form)

• How?• Read the instructions completely!!!• Bring two black or blue pens (paper form)

• Create a master application form• Copies of your resume

• Where?• Somewhere out of the way of customer interaction.

How to correctly fill out your application form

• Identify the specific position for which you are applying.

• Answer honestly • Answer completely

• Every question that applies to you.

• If you do not know the answer… find out!

• Write N/A (not applicable) if the question actually does not apply to you.

• Do NOT abbreviate uncommon words.

• Sign the application (if requested)

• Proofread

• Fill out the comment section, if available,

• Explain why you have chosen to apply at that business.

• Be detailed and specific.• Bilingual, skills,

certifications, software knowledge, etc…

References

• Unbiased people who will speak positively of your skills, abilities, character, work ethic, etc.

• Do Not use family members or friends!!

• Always ask permission BEFORE you list someone as a reference.

• Best options:• Teachers, counselors,

past employers, etc…• Think: adult,

employed, nice comments

Work Experience

• Companies you have worked for in the past.• Dates, duties, contact,

etc…

• Volunteer work• Should have all of the same info, with the exception

of salary.

• Examples of skill building:• Lawn Care (mowing)• Babysitting• Cooking (dinner for

fam.)• Cleaning (chores)• Tutoring

• Fill out the provided general application form. Due Monday.• You are required to fill in ALL areas of the form. You are only given

ONE form… read before marking.• If you make a mistake, draw a single line through it and correct.

• FAQs• ALL info must be REAL… with exception of work experience, if needed. If you

don’t know the info… look it up before you turn it in on Monday!!• 10 points off for not using a blue/black pen.• Previous Experience:

• Dates: Month/Year format. If you are still working there put the end date as: current or present

• Reason for leaving: seasonal, position eliminated, schedule conflict, moved, KEEP POSITIVE

• If you have NOT had a REAL JOB or VOLUNTEER experience: • Use the Pro. Comm. Classifieds, taped to the side board. Pick 2 jobs that you are NOT

applying for to use as previous job experience. Make up the dates and contact email.

• Education:• Year began high school-present (2010-present)• Graduated: Expected year (exp. 2014)

• References:• ASK before listing!• Use professional contact information, not personal.
