Thank you for attending or providing a proxy for the Annual RiverRun Homeowners Association (RRHOA) Meeting on March 5th.During this meeting, we elected a new board member Rob Gelb

and re-elected Tony Smith, Curt Vondrasek and Jim Dorociak. The newboard elected the following officers for 2013: President - Kamala Martinez;Vice President - Jim Dorociak; Treasurer - Tony Smith; and Secretary -Rob Gelb. Tammara Williams, Peter Scavetta and Curt Vondrasek are theother Directors.

In 2013, the board will focus on three major tasks: 1) reviewing andupdating our Bi-Laws and Rules & Regulations; 2) launching the newRiver Run Website, combining both the River Run Club and the River RunHomeowners Association board’s information; and 3) implementing anew “standing” ten-year Revocable Proxy.

This new standing ten year proxy will allow us to more easily achieve aquorum for the Annual Meeting. Every year we need to scramble toensure at least 25% of Homeowners either attend or sign a proxy. You willreceive this new proxy in the mail from Rowell Management, with apostage paid return envelope. Please consider signing and returning thenew proxy which will help the board achieve this quorum goal.

Lastly, we will be working hard to ensure the entrances and berms areready for the Spring Season.

Before I sign off… I would like to thank Rex Burr for his leadership,dedication and service as our RRHOA President the past two years. Wewill miss his colorful stories and family adventures in our newsletters. Iwill try and live up to his high standards of writing, but it will be difficult.

Always in search of the next bestbreakfast spot, I decided to visitthe recently-opened Juicy-O

Pancake House® in Naperville to see formyself what all the buzz was about. Ofcourse I had been given several off-the-cuff reviews of their famous donuts, but Iwanted to delve headlong into the meat oftheir breakfast/brunch fare, to fashionsome perspective of my own. I waspleasantly surprised with the overallexperience, and, not so surprisingly, itbegan with those exquisite donuts.

The wait time was decidedly brief, evenfor the notoriously busy time slot almostalways reserved for lateSunday mornings andearly afternoons. Thedining area wasbustling with activityand light-heartedchatter from a mix ofcouples, families andlarge parties of eight ormore. Our serverarrived quickly to ourtable, and, afterexchanging routinepleasantries, enthusiastically initiated theordering process.

The aforementioned donuts were whiskedto our table, readily engaging us in theimpeding breakfast experience. Made bytheir affectionately-named “Wake upMachine,” Juicy-O’s has perfected thedonut in all its simplistic glory. I wasthoroughly mesmerized by the delicatelymoist texture and sweet, rich taste thatwas tantalizingly addictive. It gives awhole new meaning to the adage, “youcan’t stop at one.” Once I had recoveredfrom my sugar-induced euphoria, I wasready to order from the expansive menu,that featured everything from omelettes to

scramblers to pancakes and crepes tounique combinations that invite you tosample the best from all corners of themenu.

For pancake lovers, there is plenty ofcooked batter to go around. Pancakes areginormous and ripe for sharing. Being aself-appointed connoisseur of corned beefhash, I was eager to try their iteration ofcourse. Juicy-O’s green pepper andonion-infused hash blend has a fairlyunique presentation and flavoring, whichshould delight most fans of the dish.

The Little Ones in your party will enjoythe French toast sticks,fresh fruit and tangysmoothies. Adults willbe charmed by thecoffee bar that greetsyou at the front counter.

Like its industrycounterparts, Juicy-OPancake House® closesat 3:00 p.m. each day,but you’ll find solace inits early afternoon

menu as well, from the juicy burgers to itshuge wraps and fanciful array of freshsalads.

by all the activity at the shelter. Everyone is very nice

to me, but I'm eager to settle in to my new home. I was

adopted from here as a puppy and brought back after

6 years because my owner no longer had time for my

needs. I'm a smart girl--I know "sit," "stay," "down,"

"shake" and "roll over." Impressive, right? No cats for

me in my new home, but I can live with children and

possibly with other dogs (I can be little picky about my

dog friends). I love to snuggle under blankets. Do you

want to snuggle with me?

Children Invited... “BREAKING THE CHAIN!”The Naperville Area Humane Society would like to invite children grades 3-5 to participate in our “Breakingthe Chain” Story Contest. This creative writing project allows children to finish the story using theirimagination to assist Duke, a lonely and scared chained dog. While imagining solutions they are also learningthe valuable lessons of empathy, kindness and compassion. These lessons are extremely important in today’sworld of bullying and school violence.

This contest has been endorsed locally by the Mayor of Naperville, George Pradel and the Naperville AnimalControl Department. The national non-profit organization, Dogs Deserve Better, which is dedicated toadvocating on behalf of chained and penned dogs, has also fully endorsed our contest. Each grade levelwinner of this contest will receive a time with the staff at the Naperville Area Humane Society. They willreceive a NAHS T-shirt, get a “behind the scenes” tour, have lunch and enjoy fun with the shelter animals.The winning entries will also be posted on our website and a press release will go out to our local newspapers.

Spring is here and we are allanxious to get outside andstart working in the gardens.

As you pack up the kids to head to thegarden center, there are a few basicsthat might come in handy as you thinkabout what you want in your yard.

What is that plant?What is the difference between

annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees?When you hear these terms tossedabout, sometimes it can be confusing.

Annuals: These plants grow only oneyear and will not survive our winters.They can produce lots of flowers andcan require regular fertilizing,depending on the type.

Perennials: These plants come backeach year, but may die back to theground over the winter. Usually,perennials have a shorter season ofbloom. When you’re picking out plantstry to plant a variety of perennials thatbloom at different times to give you arich display throughout the season.

Shrubs: These are plants with a woodystem that come back year after yearand are generally not cut down to theground. Some shrubs stay small andsome can grow to the size of smalltrees. Usually, shrubs have severalstems at the base. They also have asingle season of blossom.

Trees: These are single or multi-stemmed woody plants that are quitelarge and live a long time. Trees cangrow anywhere from about ten feethigh to more than seventy! Trees canhave flowers and some have fruit.

Mother Nature doesn’t alwaysplay by the rules, so there are someexceptions to the above. Butterfly

bush, for example, has woody stems,but we generally cut it to the groundevery year as those stems aren’t winterhardy. It will sprout new stems fromthe base, so it’s considered a perennial.

How much sun do I have?This is important to know as you

look at plant tags or labels. They’ll tellyou what kind of light the plantprefers, but how do you know whatyou have? Try to spend some timeobserving the sun patterns in youryard.

Full sun: This means six hours or moreof sun anytime during the day, usuallyfound on the south and west sides ofbuildings unless shaded by structuresor trees.

Part shade: Lightly filtered sun orthree to five hours of morning and/orlate afternoon sun, usually found onthe east side of buildings and underthe light shade of trees.

When I plant?Each plant has its own

requirements, so read the tag and askgarden center staff for advice. April isa great time to plant trees, shrubs, mostperennials as well as cool seasonannuals and vegetables while soil isnice and moist. Plus, you have manymonths for roots to get established.Some annuals and vegetables,especially tomatoes, prefer warm soilto grow, so wait until mid-May toplant them. You can plant all summerlong, as long as you water carefully.Fall planting can also be ideal as warmsoil and cool air are perfect for rootgrowth.

What about my soil?Before you get the shovel out,

check the moisture of your soil.Squeeze a handful of soil. If it clumpsinto a solid mass it is too wet. If itcrumbles, it’s ready to be worked.When you dig in wet soil, it cancompact so that the air and waterspaces are squeezed out. This meansroots struggle to grow. If you haveheavy clay soil, you may want to mixin compost to loosen the soil and addmicronutrients.

River Run Raptors Swim TeamSubmitted by Franz Weyandt • President, River Run Raptors

Swim season is almost upon us. The River Run Raptors Swim Team is anot-for-profit organization and a member of the Naperville Park DistrictSwim Conference. The team was established in 1995 with a membershipbase that continues to grow every year. With the help of dedicated parents,the River Run Raptors Swim Team is a self-funded and private organizationdesigned for the children of the River Run Community.

The Raptors focus on Team Building, promoting Self Esteem andSportsmanship. Our program is open to any Club members whose children

are ages 5-18. All we ask is that they can swim unassisted across the pool. We will take it fromthere! Our program runs from late May until late July.

We have outdoor practices Monday through Friday starting at the end of the school year, whichis a great way for the children to get daily exercise. In addition, we have an early morning adultlane for parents who want to keep in shape! We participate in the Naperville Swim Conferenceand host 4 home meets (including babysitting for the youngest siblings) and 4 away meets withinother Naperville subdivisions in June and July. During the season, we have some fun socialevents like our pep Rally and a themed Saturday night party. We complete the season withNaperville City Championships and wrap it up at the end of July with a banquet at theBolingbrook Country Club where the children are the main focus.

For the 2013 season, our team fees will be similar to last year, and we do also ask the eachfamily donate their time to make the program a success.

We also have a co-ed Water Polo Team. We are looking for elementaryand junior high children to participate on our COED team. You do notneed to be a Raptor swimmer to be on the Water Polo Team as long asyou are a club member. There is an additional fee for water polo, butthere is a discount for Raptor swimmers. We encourage children to doboth! Most all of our swimmers also participate in other summer sportsand clubs as conflicts can be easily managed in our low stress program.

Since the outdoor tennis season is just around the corner. I have included somespring/summer information and key dates!
