June proved to be a very busy and productive month for the board. Many decisions were made and committee positions were updated and formalized. Following are the highlights. On the committee front, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Jeff Algrem has graciously volunteered to serve on the Architectural Review Committee. Jeff will chair the committee, and will work closely with current ARC members John DeYoung and Fred Langer. In addition, River Run HOA board members Peter Scavetta and Curt Vondrasek have volunteered to be the board liaisons to the ARC. The ARC held their first meeting earlier this week, so please look for more to come as it relates to the architectural review process and guidelines. I’m also happy to report that board members Tammara Williams and Peter Scavetta have volunteered to be the board liaisons to the Landscape Committee. I hope you will take a moment to thank these volunteers when you see them, and be sure to offer them your support as they transition into their new roles. We’ve received several positive comments regarding the entrances this spring – thank you! It’s now that time of the season where we need to perform some necessary pruning to promote new growth and colorful blooms, so please don’t be alarmed if you notice the vibrant purple Cat Mint has been trimmed…it will grow back! In addition, we’ll be replacing some unhealthy trees and adding some new ones along the perimeter. As I mentioned last month, we will hold most of the rejuvenation work until fall in order to minimize the impact on our neighbors. As I close for this month, and at the risk of becoming a broken record, I ask that each of you please keep your trees trimmed along the parkway, and be sure to keep your garbage cans and lawn bags out of site on non-collection days. You don’t want to end up with a violation notice from Rowell like I did! Have a great July! Check the River Run Website www.river-run.org for the next Board meeting. Attract Butterflies With a Garden

Summer gardens can be ablaze withbutterflies. Creating a butterflygarden can be a wonderful project foradults and children, but be prepared to offerplants for both adult butterflies and theircaterpillars. You will find that adult butterfliesfeed on a wide array of flowers, but larva aremore particular and only choose certain plants. To attract adults, consider planting flowers inmasses and plan your planting so there areflowers from spring into fall. Some perennialsand annuals that are butterfly magnets includebutterfly bush, purple coneflower, milkweed, verbena, salvia, lantana, Joe-Pye weed, and beebalm. Many of these plants are also attractive tohummingbirds and songbirds.

One important step in creating a butterflygarden is to avoid using insecticides, as manywill kill the caterpillars you are trying toencourage. Many butterflies only have one ortwo host plants. Monarchs will only lay eggson milkweed, pipevine swallowtails only onspecies of Dutchman’s pipe vine and spicebushswallowtail only on spicebush. Otherbutterflies will choose parsley, dill, asters, coreopsis, false indigo, birch, willow, cherry ortulip trees.

These colorful insects like to have sunnyspots to warm their cold blood and a protectedspot where they are not buffeted by strongwinds. Add a resting spot that heats up such asa dark colored rock or boulder. Butterflies needwater, but their delicate bodies prefer a shallowpan of wet sand where they can get moisture, but not drown. A sprinkle of salt in the panmimics minerals found in nature.

Butterflies are just one of our wingedfriends that we welcome to The Growing Place. Please join us for our annual Winging It Day onSaturday, August 11 at our Aurora location onMontgomery Road. Celebrate butterflies, bees, bats and birds with a talks, butterfly hatchinghaven, nature crafts, informative booths, andmore.

    I RESCUEDMY BESTFRIEND!

Pet TalesBy the Naperville Area Humane Society

Hi, my name is Ashley and I am a four-year-oldshepherd mix. I try to keep smiling everydaythrough good and bad times. Unfortunately, Ihave had a lot of bad times. Back in Indianawhere I am from, I was abandoned and broughtto a shelter. Then I was neglected by the peoplewho adopted me and I was back at the shelter, yet again. I spent some time in a foster homewhere I was attacked by another dog. I madethe long trip up to Naperville where I am lookingfor a fresh start. My scars are healing and I stilllong for a loving, forever home more thananything. I'm a very sweet, gentle girl and I liketo snuggle and give kisses. Please adopt meand give me something to really smile about!
