Sandra has served as Chairman of APRA’s Heavy Duty Remanufacturing Group from 2011 to today and in that capacity she will chair the HDRG Summit on January 27, 2014 at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.

APRA is extremely proud to welcome Sandra Standley to this select group of industry leaders. r

A Job Well Doneby Kirsten Kase, EditorIt is with personal regret but the warmest wishes that we announce the retirement of William “Bill” Gager, effective December 31st. Bill's leaving marks the end of an era for the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association.

With his deep industry knowledge, his long-standing and strong partnerships with other associations, his interpersonal relationships with our members, and a record of proven leadership during both the best and most challenging years APRA has experienced, Bill's steadfast presence at the helm of the association will be missed by all of us.

During the 2013 BIG R Show in Las Vegas last month we held a salute to our friend and mentor. To a person, everyone who stood up and spoke talked about Bill's generosity and his ability to see into the future and make the connections that helped build individual careers and busi-nesses, as well as grow the association and the cause of remanufacturing. And not one person failed to mention his warmth and sincerity, hallmarks of his term as President of APRA.

After all the well wishes and stories were told, Bill took the podium and true to character, expressed his thanks for the opportunity to serve such an “authentic industry.”

APRA President, Bill Gager, received a standing ovation during his Farewell Salute Breakfast at the 2013 BIG R Show

- Your staff at APRA Bill, Mark, Jeanie, Teresa, Marlene, George,

Kathy, Morris, Traci & Kirsten

My Salute to APRAI wanted to take a few minutes to thank everyone who participated in the “Salute to Bill Gager” Breakfast that took place on the morning of November 4th at the BIG R Show in Las Vegas. It was a very emotional time for me as various mem-bers of APRA spoke about my service to the association over the past 35 years.

As I mentioned during my remarks at the end, I have seen many people go through the chairs in service to the membership. These people have served as Chairman or officers or committee Chairman. Never once have I seen anyone take advantage of their office and do something for their personal gain. They have all performed their duties and responsibilities with the sole purpose of serving the industry from which they made their livelihood. It has indeed been a great opportunity to help them better serve the remanufacturing community over these 35 + years.

I also wanted to thank the APRA staff for all their hard work and dedication. Many of them have worked along side me for 15 to 30 years. They are a very professional group of people who have always dedicat-ed themselves to putting the member first in everything that they have done for the association. As you can imagine we have become like family. When you spend 40+ hours a week around some very nice and dedicated people it does feel like family.

Probably one of the toughest times we had as a family was following the events of 9-11-01 and the cancellation of our trade show that year which was scheduled for Dallas, Texas. To watch the staff and the Board members at that time make a lot of decisions that impacted the indus-try is heart-warming. Everyone came together to make some critical decisions that impacted the association with regard to something that was totally out of our control.

There have been many highs and lows in this job over the past 35 years, but the real highs have always been the pleasure of

working with such quality members and staff. It has been a real pleasure.

Someone asked me what I was going to do in my retirement. I guess a lot of people believe that we should go on to some other type of career.

Some have suggested that my answer should be…“Whatever I want to do.” My wife tells me, I married you for ever and ever, but not for lunch.

I’ve got some things on my bucket list to do which I need to do while I’m still young, so I look forward to the adventures ahead.

To all of you…Thanks!!!!

Core Supplier IssueThe December issue of the GLOBAL CONNECTION has been devoted to the Core Suppliers who are members of APRA. These folks are the ones who

supply the raw materials to the industry and do an outstanding job of servicing the remanufacturers of all types of products. Without their participation in the logistics chain the remanufacturers would have a very hard time of properly servicing their customers and particularly the motoring public would suffer.

So for those core suppliers who are not members, we hope you join APRA so that we can publish your complete contact details in next December’s issue.

Mohammad SamiiIn the November issue of PARTS & PEOPLE our own Mohammad Samii was featured with a very nice article about himself and his business—Sammy’s Auto Electric in Champaign, Illinois. The article addressed the challenges that late model units bring to the rebuilding com-munity with core quality topping the list of concerns. For those of you who missed reading it, please visit the Parts & People website (www.partsandpeople.com) for a copy of the article.

What can I say Boss, but “you’re won-derful!” Working for you for the past 17 years has been an absolute honor. You are a true gentleman in all aspects of the word. I have learned many things from you, but what I admire the most about you is your optimism and respect. I have never met a person with a more positive attitude and outlook than you. I will miss that immensely.

You always wear your heart on your sleeve and have a smile on your face. I can honestly say APRA will not be the same without you.

Where ever your new path in life takes you – Fearless Leader – you will never be forgotten! Enjoy yourself, you have certainly earned it!- Teresa Giroux, Director of Financial Services

How do I summarize 30 years of working with you? In a word, great! What a ride. They say that when you enjoy your job it does not seem like work. How true it has been.

While I did not always agree with your decisions, I came to understand them and more importantly respect them. You have guided this association through its highs and lows with the same optimism, always finding the best in all situations. I can say without reservation that I have learned more from you than any other person. I realize that this association will never be as well rounded without you at the helm. Your selflessness and willingness to work until the end is an incredible inspiration. Judging from the faces of the staff at your “salute” in Vegas, you will be greatly missed by all of us.

You took a chance on me 30 years ago, and have been a great mentor every step of the way. I will miss talking with you on a daily basis. Please stay in touch.

Be safe, be healthy, be happy, travel often. Congratulations on a job well done!- Mark Kothe, Chief Operating Officer

When I first met you 30 years ago, you were wearing a Happy Pin. The pin became a symbol for you; you were happy on the inside. You continued to wear that same pin for years, day in and day out. People commented about this pin, some positively, some jokingly, but you always took the comments in stride. It didn’t matter.

Over the years we worked together (you eventually took the happy pin off), I saw a very passionate man who cared about doing the right thing. You treated every-one fair and had no hidden agendas. Your optimism and dedication to the industry proved strong. You were the catalyst to starting many careers in the automotive aftermarket. You were also the catalyst to many great achievements, such as the European Division, the PAACE Show, etc.

As Ivan Cregger said at your retirement breakfast, you are one of the best things to happen to APRA. The standing ovation you received during that breakfast proves that, as well as the rush of members who came to embrace you as you exited the stage.

We appreciate all you have done for us and the industry over the years—we will sincerely miss you. I wish you only the best for a great and happy retirement!- Jeanie Magathan, Senior Vice President

The 2013 APRA Big R Show is now history. In addi-tion to moving the show to the new Tropicana Hotel and seeing a much larger than usual crowd, next year’s Convention

promises to be huge one in a new hotel for APRA (Rio) and in conjunction with ATRA. That said, I think the most impor-tant news of the Convention was APRA’s President, Bill Gager’s, retirement. There was a special Sunday breakfast held in appreciation to Bill where many stood up and talked about their experiences with him during the last 30+ years that he has been running the APRA.

During this long tenure with the associa-tion, Bill was instrumental for a lot of progress. Perhaps his most important achievement was expanding the associa-tion from a North American organization into an international prominence with membership and divisions in Europe, Asia, and South America. Many of these markets weren't on board with parts remanufacturing, but with a green move-

ment which is now sweeping nearly every developed and under-developed nation, the idea of rebuilding or remanufacturing, which saves huge amounts of energy as well as water and other natural resources while elimination thousands of tons of waste, has been an attractive one and is being considered nearly by all nations.

Over the years, Bill has always encour-aged me to continue with my writing and teaching. By sponsoring me and giving me the opportunities to teach seminars for events outside of the APRA circle such as Automechanika, ShowPower (now Auto-Tech), Vision Hi-tech Training and others, not only has it put APRA upfront as a leading association in remanufactur-ing, but also served to familiarize many technicians to the essence of electrical rebuilding. APRA has provided them with the much needed training on newer tech-nologies relating to rotating electrical, and proper diagnostic techniques to prevent unnecessary unit replacement.

For all of his support which translated into recognition for me as an expert in and out of our rebuilding industry, and his encour-aging words on nearly everything I did or wrote, I thank him. I am very grateful for his kind support and wish him the best on whatever he would like to accomplish next.

Starting System ChallengeThe starting system, which has always been considered a simple thing to work with, has evolved into something rather complicated—some with a PCM author-ity, and some with full PCM activation of starter and cranking time control. Trouble-shooting and repair of these more sophis-ticated systems requires a degree of fa-miliarity with their operation, and proper diagnostic procedures, which sometimes require a process of elimination.

We had a 2003 Mercury Sable (sister vehicle to Ford Taurus), equipped with a 3.0L OHV engine with a peculiar starting problem that was sent to us to figure out and repair. The starter would stay engaged while the engine was running and obvi-ously ruin the starter in a short time. The tow truck dropped off the car that had a new remanufactured Lester #6642 starter and Lester #8268 alternator already on it. After charging the battery, we noticed there is no cranking from the starter at all, and while removing it, the heavy smell of the burned varnish gave us a clue that it had stayed engaged long enough to burn up completely.

Since it was under warranty, the customer picked it up, went to the auto part store, and brought us a replacement. He admit-ted this was the third starter so far ruined by this car, and their warranty has taken care of all of them! It became necessary to take a look into the schematics to see the system arrangement and figure out what could cause this starter to stay engaged while the engine was running.

As shown in simplified schematic (Fig-ure 1), the ignition switch feeds the DTR (Digital Transmission Range Sensor), which has replaced the old familiar neu-

tral safety switch. If the gear shift is in “Park”’, the DTR feeds the positive side of the starter relay’s coil, and the PCM will ground the negative side to activate the starter relay. The DTR also feeds the PCM through S138 splice to convey a crank request. Since most vintage Ford/Mercury vehicle are equipped with a secu-rity system called Passive Anti-Theft Sys-tem or PATS, the PCM has the function of proving that the right key with proper coding is being used for cranking, and if it confirms, it will ground the negative side of the starter relay.

Once the relay becomes energized, the power is applied to the “S” terminal of the starter, and it will crank the engine. The more I looked into this schematic; it became obvious to me that neither the ignition switch nor the DTR could cause the starter to crank while the car was be-ing driven. The only viable possibility was the starter relay that could indeed stick, and keep on feeding the “S” terminal of the starter.

Now the challenge became to find the starter relay. Going by the Component Locator or even the schematic, it shows the relay to be on the junction block next to the radiator. But there are many relays there and the cover only shows their num-ber and not their name.

We could possibly identify the starter relay by pulling each relay one at a time, but fortunately some help is provided by Ford via the www.motorcraftservice.com website. This is the same site we go to purchase PCM downloads and reflashing programs as well as entire Ford’s service manual for all Ford vehicles, based on a short-term, weekly, monthly, or annual subscription. The site also provides some

Once on the Motorcraft site, you will find the “Owner Guides“ on the left of the screen and click. A menu opens up asking what car. Once filled out, a PDF copy of the owner’s manual is downloaded. We did exactly the same to find out relay #23 was actually the starter relay. (Figure 2, pg 3)

Inspection of the relay showed some minor damage and signs of overheating. It got replaced with a new one and the car was fixed, tested, and delivered.

Vermeer Wood-chipperAs an auto-electric shop, repairing cars and trucks for electrical problem is not the only thing we concentrate on and welcome it even more when a piece of industrial equipment comes in for various electrical, or charging /starting problems.

These types of vehicles that are actually revenue–pro-ducing machines (I heard this term from Barney Kaplan some 30 years ago!) and are always needed badly by the owners. They are mostly in the middle of a contract, have a few employees waiting on it, and thus the cost of repair is not usually the main concern of the owner.

We had this OE#101211-2941 (Lester #12771) alterna-tor brought in when the owner claimed he had purchased a new one on EBay for about $95 and thought it was a great deal as the dealer wanted more than $450 for the same thing. Of course the new unit did not solve the problem, and since the original Denso unit was still in his possession, he requested (to my great surprise) that we rebuild his original one, and if it didn’t solve his charging problem, he would bring in the whole machine.

A day later he dropped off a Vermeer BC-1000 wood-chipper to fix the charging problem. These machines are usually equipped with small 3-cyl Diesel engines that have a straightforward charging system. We do not have their wiring diagram on-hand, but figuring its simple charging system was a no brainer. The problem found was a missing +B feed to the alternator. Once the loom was located and the rusted out wire was identified and repaired, the charging system worked fine and the work was done. (Figure 3)

Needless to say rebuilding the alternator and the work on a machine that the dealer would have possibly taken days to figure out and repair turned out to a good deal for us, resulting in a healthy invoice and a satisfied customer, who admitted the value of a personal service by a quali-fied shop rather than buying cheap parts off the Internet.

Parts AvailabilityWe had a call for an OE# 421000-7001 (Lester #11379) alternator that is a hairpin stator Denso 220-Amp unit with a clutch pulley, used on late model (2011-2012) Dodge trucks. It was too new of a unit to have on the shelf, but I asked that they bring it in for testing, and if found defective, perhaps we could rebuild it.

Later that day they brought it in and our testing found it to be defective. It still had some output but was growl-ing badly. After taking the cover off, it did not take long to find out that the rectifier was bad. I could visibly see two burned diodes. (Figure 4) A quick search in a few supplier’s websites revealed that no one was showing a rectifier for this unit. Obviously repairing this unit was out of the question, as I do not like tearing into OE recti-fiers and replacing a diode or two, especially for such a high-output alternator.

It should be mentioned this one is one of those alterna-tors that has an oval 3-pin connector marked P-IG-L, using an IN-348 (J&N's 2301-52129) regulator. It should not be mistaken with similar 3-pin regulators that do not have the same function. “P” is a stator signal that is used by the machine to confirm a running motor.

Figure 3 - Vermeer Wood-chipper and the Alternator on the Engine (inset)

Another issue is what sort of load, or problem existed on the truck that burned the OE rectifier on a Denso 220-Amp alternator? Would my makeshift rectifier last on the vehicle if the real culprit was not identified and fixed? The customer went to the dealer to order a new one. I hope the new one does not meet its demise like the first one, because the real problem was not fixed.

The point is, if a service part is not available then proper rebuilding of a unit is not possible, and second, if the cause of the failure is not determined, there is no guaran-tee that the new alternator would last any better.

Incidentally, this alterna-tor is the type that has only one “F” (field) pin, the “F2” is internally grounded, as has been discussed here a couple of times, and the detailed arrangement were shown in Electrical Clinics in Montreal and Las Vegas. (Figure 5)

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Holiday season, and a very prosperous New Year. Until I see you again, keep up the good work. r Mohammad Samii can be reached via email to [email protected] or through his website www.sammysautoelectric.com

When David Simon looks back on a nearly 40-year career as a clutch remanu-facturer he says one thing has remained constant: “Selling rebuilt or remanufac-tured parts is a tough sell.” He laments the fact that when Euro-Drive started in 1976 a lot of people preferred new parts. At the time buying new clutches was primarily done through au-tomotive dealers or aftermarket compa-nies who were all OE suppliers. “So the quality was superb,” said Simon. Fast forward to today’s market and he says mechanics still prefer new, but to-day’s “new” is typically from an overseas supplier. “Those clutches are getting bet-ter, but they are not the OE equivalent.” Unfortunately, Simon says the “thought that, ‘I want new, not rebuilt’ is still in their (mechanics) minds.” Simon says his father, Harry, 83, who still works at Euro-Drive, has always been a great salesman on the merits of remanufactured products. “Dad always had a great comeback for shops who were hesitant to buy remanu-factured clutches,” explained Simon. “He

would say, ‘Okay what exactly do you do here?’ They would say, ‘We do brake jobs and fix transmissions and engines.’ Dad would then retort, ‘Oh, do you ever take engines apart?’ They would reply, ‘All the time.’” Simon says his dad would cleverly fol-low up with: “’Isn’t that rebuilding? You don’t like your own rebuilding too?’” That would usually put a pause in their mind and they would say, ‘I guess we are rebuilding all day long.’ Dad won a lot of people over with that.” With a laugh he said, “Dad would spend a half hour selling something worth a nickel; but you had to sell it.”

From The Race Track to RebuildingThe origins of Euro-Drive is a fascinat-ing story of being in the right place at the right time. Harry Simon and his wife, Hilda, immigrated to Ottawa, Canada in the ‘50s from Germany. David and his older brother, John, were both born in Canada.

Harry worked at various jobs, including a short stint at a nightclub in the Ottawa area that was owned by the father of singer Paul Anka. He later worked at a

Mercedes-Benz dealership sanding cars. Because of his math skills, Harry got a job in the parts department of the dealership. The family that owned the dealership opened several wholesale auto parts stores under the banner of Silver Star Motors. As the company grew, they opened a division in Hamilton, Ontario.

“That store wasn’t doing well, so Mr. Marin's (the owner of the dealership and

parts stores) sent my Dad to help run it,” said Simon.

“By then my dad was the parts manager for the dealership and Mr. Marin's told him, ‘Harry you either fix it up there or close it. We can’t afford to lose money.’”

Simon says his dad liked the milder climate in Hamilton, where it did not snow as much. “Though the store wasn’t

Harry and Hilda Simon ran Silver Star Auto Parts from 1964 to 1980 selling auto parts for import cars. The family lived in the same building above the auto parts store and the Simon brothers grew up with the business. At the age of 16, John, became the youngest race car driver in Canada first racing an MG Midget and later a Datsun 510.

“With John racing, we had a motorhome and spent our time at the race track on weekends,” explained Simon.

One memorable weekend, Hilda stayed home to attend the auction of a company that was going out of business due to a disagreement between the partners. The rest of the Simon family went off to the race track to watch John compete. Hilda hoped to buy some of the auto parts inven-tory.

In addition to selling parts, the company going out of business was selling off its clutch rebuilding business.

“We knew one of the partners well and he came to my mother and said: ‘I want to get rid of all the clutch machines as one group. The big companies are here from Toronto and they only want certain machines and I don’t want to break it up.

Would you mind putting in an offer for the whole lot? We won’t hold you to it, we just want to use it as leverage so we can get someone else to buy it all.’”

Simon’s mother consented to place a bid for the clutch rebuilding equipment. During the auction she was able to buy all kinds of valuable auto parts for the family business.

When it was time for the rebuilding equip-ment to be auctioned, no bids for all the machines had been secured by the buyers. So Simon’s mother had to decide whether she wanted her prior bid to stand and called Harry at the race track to see what he wanted to do.

“Picture this,” explained Simon, “my Dad’s standing in the middle of the race track talking on the phone to my mother. Cars are zipping around and he could hear nothing.”

Simon’s mother asked her husband what she should do about all the machinery that was available for purchase at a good price. “So my Dad, not hearing anything my Mom said, replied back: ‘Honey, do what-ever you want.’ Dad didn’t grasp what was happening.”

It wasn’t until the next Monday morning, when all the family sat down for break-fast, that Harry Simon discovered he was now the co-owner of clutch rebuilding

equipment.

Learning to RebuildAfter letting the equipment sit in the fami-ly barn for about four months, the Simon’s rented a shop nearby and Euro-Drive com-menced doing business in 1976. One of the owners they had bought the business from, Helmud, trained the Simon’s in clutch rebuilding.

Simon says rebuilt clutches were a nice addition to the company’s import part business.

“We quickly realized it took a lot more re-sources in manpower and money to get all the parts you need,” said Simon. “Every clutch has a different facing, the rivets are different and you can’t order five facings you’ve got to order hundreds at a time. We needed to step up what we were doing.”

The next phase of Euro-Drive’s growth occurred in 1979 when they bought a competitor who wanted to get out of rebuilding clutches.

“They had 9,000 VW Beetle facings,” related Simon, “and we thought that was a lot because we were only buying hundreds at a time.

“We don’t have them anymore,” said Si-mon with a laugh. Simon said they ended up doing a tremendous business with Volkswagen clutches.

The company moved into its current loca-tion that same year and by the early ‘80s they shut down Silver Star Auto Parts due to changes in the market.

“We just couldn’t compete with American jobbers who were coming into the market due to the volume pricing they were get-ting,” said Simon.

Once the auto parts business was closed, Hilda retired and within a few years became sick with a kidney disease. She struggled against the disease before pass-ing away in 1991.

Harry eventually remarried, and his new wife, Hannelore, came to work in the business helping run the office and collect bills. A retired nurse, Simon calls Hannelore his “bonus mother.” Both Harry and Hannelore are still working at Euro-Drive.

Simon says John eventually left the company and became a licensed auto me-chanic. He lives about three hours away, but has come back to work at Euro-Drive from time to time.

Dealing with AdversityLike his mother who battled a kidney disease, Simon has faced the same disease the past seven years. He endures dialysis treatments three times a week that last over four hours and sadly he says his health has gone downhill in recent years.

Though he never complains and main-tains a great attitude, Simon has been a bit unlucky along the way. In fact, friends jokingly call him “the one.” Referencing the fact that he’s the one listed in the odds when a medical procedure does not work. For example, Simon had a hernia opera-tion and an epidural that was incorrectly administered. This caused his brain to hemorrhage resulting in seizures. As a result, Simon says he ended up being the “one in ten” who had complications from an epidural, the “one in 100” who got a headache from an epidural (which Simon said lasted a week of “you can’t move”) and the “one in 100,000” who had a seizure from an epidural. Thankfully Simon’s brother, John, came back for six months in 2011 to help run Euro-Drive while he was dealing with the seizures. To make matters worse Simon had a kid-ney transplant, and as it turned out, he was the “one in 100” in which the transplant didn’t work. On top of the kidney disease, Simon is a diabetic and three years ago his right leg was amputated after he fell and damaged his ankle and it became infected. As a result of his diabetes, Simon has neuropathy in his fingers so he’s unable to pick up a rivet anymore. “So my rebuild-ing days are behind me,” he says. “I always say if I was a horse they would have shot me a long time ago,” says Simon with a laugh. “The medical profes-sion keeps trying to fix me up!”

Euro-Drive TodaySimon has enjoyed his relationship with APRA, having served for a time as chair-man of the clutch division and helping out with technical clinics. He said being on the APRA board gave him a broader per-spective of the remanufacturing industry at large.

In its present day form, Euro-Drive is known as a clutch remanufacturer spe-cializing in automotive, agricultural and vintage clutches. With it heritage as a Eu-ropean automotive clutch rebuilder, they now have clutches for every type of vehi-cle, along with CV axles, CV drive shafts and fuel injectors. They also distribute CV boot kits, specialty universal joints, ATV driveline components, automatic transmis-sion flexplates, concentric slave cylinders, and new flywheels.

The company says on its website that “Eu-ro-Drive is dedicated to the best quality OEM rebuild in the industry. We produce clutches, CV axles, and fuel injectors, rebuilding only original equipment cores,

Massachusetts Approved Right To Repair Legislation Recently, the Massachusetts House of Representatives unanimously approved Right to Repair legislation. The legisla-tion seeks to reconcile two state laws that require car companies to provide independent repair shows and car owners full access to service information, tools and software to maintain and repair late-model vehicles. The first law passed in Massachusetts was a compromise by the Massachusetts Right to Repair Coalition and the vehicle manufacturers, and passed in July but was approved too late to remove a bal-lot measure. That ballot measure was approved in November 2012 creating two Right to Repair laws on the books in Massachusetts. While the two laws were similar there were some differences that needed to be reconciled. Differences include two different deadlines for car companies to provide their diagnostic software through a cloud-based system that utilizes a stan-dardized vehicle interface as well as the type of vehicles included in the laws. The reconciliation bill will now go to the state Senate. Both car companies and AAIA have called for the legislature to act on the reconciliation measure before the body adjourns for the year later this week. Next week, New Jersey will take up legislation that would move Right to Repair to a voter referendum, according to the AASA. Both AASA and MEMA have urged the New Jersey legislature to await the 50-state agreement in an effort to provide a uniform program. r

Jasper Engine And Transmission To Acquire Weller Truck PartsJohn Weller of Weller Truck Parts and Zach Bawel, president of Jasper Engine and Transmission Exchange, announced that a letter of intent to purchase Weller Truck Parts has been signed by all parties. Speaking for the Weller Family, John Weller stated, “Brothers Skip, Chris, Paul and I take very seriously our commitment to our Weller team. We are very proud of what they have built and we want to make sure we have a good plan for the future of our Weller team and the Weller brand. Meritor WABCO Releases Reman MACK ASET Air Compressor Meritor WABCO, a leader in integrated safety systems and efficiency technol-ogy for the North American commercial vehicle industry, is marking “America Recycles Day” with the release of a remanufactured System Saver(TM) air compressor for select trucks that use the MACK ASET engine.

“We've seen an increased demand from

manufacturers for our System Saver prod-ucts, and now we've efficiently remanu-factured our air compressor for aftermar-ket use,” said Pat Kealy, director, After-market, Meritor WABCO. “Its quality is comparable to a new compressor and with the extra ecological benefit of recycling versus adding material to a landfill.” A typical compressor contains approxi-mately 40 pounds of steel, iron and alumi-num, which has the metal content equiva-lent of approximately 1,200 beverage cans. The remanufactured air compressor minimizes the amount of waste added to landfills and offers customers an alterna-tive choice compared to a new unit.

WABCO is the original manufacturer and WABCO Reman Solutions, a part of WABCO, remanufactures the Mack ASET Compressor, making it the only Mack ASET Compressor on the market tested to the same strict specifications as an original OEM product. WABCO Reman Solutions takes each compressor through a rigorous teardown and inspection process, and it is thoroughly remanufactured using OEM components.

The remanufactured MACK ASET Com-pressor will be available through Meritor's Aftermarket group on January 2, 2014. In addition, this MACK ASET Compres-sor (Part #: S911 153 0550X) is serviced through Meritor Aftermarket group at

EVAP Monitor Failures Part of Auto TECH expo Seminar Lineup Four of 10 codes retrieved involve evaporative emissions systems (EVAP) codes. Delphi’s Greg Moyers, courtesy of Advance Auto Parts Professional, will conduct Diagnosing & Repairing Evapo-rative Monitor Failures at Auto TECH expo, April 3-5 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago.

Designed for intermediate and advanced technicians, this class covers the EVAP system, its components and the techniques needed for timely diagnosis and repair.EVAP systems are mandated by the federal government to control emissions of volatile organic compounds. This Auto TECH expo course covers various system requirements to help with understanding why the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminates and the criteria for setting a code. Technicians also will become famil-iar with systems that use a pump and those that do not. Trying to locate a 0.020-inch leak can be difficult, so Greg will cover the required equipment, procedures and safety precautions. He also will present industry case studies that prove monitor theories and diagnostic techniques.

Technicians attending this seminar will learn about EVAP systems (including operation and function); OBD-II EVAP monitor components, tests and pump systems; the criteria affecting the EVAP monitor; OBD-II EVAP diagnostic trouble codes and EVAP scan-tool diagnosis; tools and techniques for EVAP leak diagnosis; testing for insufficient EVAP flow; EVAP service-bay tests; drivability concerns with EVAP systems; oxygen-sensor opera-tion with EVAP systems; using OBD-II monitors to diagnosis and verify repairs; and diagnosis of evaporative-emissions components. Transtar Industries Acquires Texarkana-Based TPS Transmission SupplyTranstar Industries has acquired the assets of TPS Transmission Supply (TPS), a Tex-arkana, Texas, based supplier of original equipment (OE) and aftermarket transmis-sion replacement parts. TPS’ business will be integrated into Transtar’s central region operations; terms of the sale were not disclosed. “We are excited about this acquisition, and the attractive market opportunities it will deliver in this important region,” said Tim Bowes, CEO of Transtar. “Our organiza-tions share the same focus on customer

service. TPS is a great fit for Transtar, and I look forward to the significant regional presence they’ll bring going forward.” Pete Kaburick, president and CEO of TPS, stated, “I’ve enjoyed a professional relationship with members of the Transtar organization for many years. We’ve long been familiar with their business and watched them grow into an industry-lead-ing distributor. I’m very pleased to join forces with their highly respected team, and anticipate a smooth transition for our customers and employees.” Transtar’s distribution network consists of more than 80 locations in the U.S., Can-ada and Puerto Rico, and an international division that serves a global network of aftermarket automotive distributors in 80 countries. TPS has five locations in Texas, Arkan-sas and Louisiana, and approximately 35 employees. TPS’ transmission repair business, Kason, was not part of the sale to Transtar and will continue to operate independently under its current name. “This acquisition allows us to have a physical presence in this part of the country,” added Corby Wilemon, vice president, central region. “While we do ship to customers in these cities, we look forward to offering same-day service from local Transtar branches as well as serving the significant customer base that

TPS already has established.”Source: aftermarketNews staff

From its start cores have been the lifeblood of the re-manufacturing industry. Without cores, no remanufactur-ing business is possible and many people cross the world would be without jobs. Moreover no CO2 savings of the remanufacturing industry could support the efforts of the automotive industry to reduce its environmental impact.

Securing a steady supply of cores is what a new initia-tive between some of the automotive industry’s important players aims at. The initiator, Bosch is currently rolling out a new, international core management system in Eu-rope, USA and China - CoremanNet. Others are invited to join in.

CoremanNet’s mission is to make Remanufacturing available worldwide through providing an easy and effi-cient core collection system. This approach embraces the remanufacturing industry as well as the tier 1 and 2 level businesses. “So far we have established collection points in Europe as well as in Atlanta, Georgia and Shanghai in China. We’re also working on a core return system for Russia,” Maria Bonelli of Bosch’s CoremanNet team states.

returned cores is, the higher the remanufacturing quota and the greater the potential for saving resources. We see substantial benefits for the remanufacturing industry from a well-organized core management system. An easy and efficient core manage-ment is not only a prerequisite for a successful remanufactur-ing, it may well turn out to be a key to it.”

“On the one hand CoremanNet, can strengthen the reman business of industrial remanu-facturer’s businesses by providing a stable and fully developed reverse logistic system and on the other hand, it can help them achieve better market penetration through collaborative core-

Cores: The Lifeblood of the Remanufacturing Industryby Holger Christiansen A/S, A Bosch Group Company Automotive Aftermarket

At the selection points CoremanNet pre-selects the cores which means that cores are accepted or rejected in the country in which they originate. Directly after the evalua-tion of the core the credit note can be processed - a major strength of the concept.

“CoremanNet is designed to reduce the complexity of returning cores,” Maria Bonelli explains. Today, Tier 1 companies use different channels to return cores to each supplier of remanufactured products. Not only are the logistics different but so is reporting and documentation, Coremanet is offering one single and systematic core return system which, in addition, reduce the financial risks for Tier 1s. The aim of it all is to provide simplicity, transparency and fairness.”

Being present at Automechanika in Frankfurt, Germany in 2012 and at Rematec, Amsterdam 2013, CoremanNet has gathered a great deal of interest CoremanNet expects further sign-ups over the coming months. They reject the suspicion raised by some, that the initiative will be more advantageous to larger businesses rather than smaller.

“Cores are the raw material for every remanufacturing process,” Maria Bonelli says. “CoremanNet offers an international core return service with a simple and reliable core return process and surcharge compensation. This effective interface between dealer and remanufacturer provides the right cores at the right time in a defined qual-ity to the remanufacturing plant. With a return quote of approx. 90% and one of the largest collection volumes in the market, CoremanNet contributes directly to the envi-ronmental protection - because, the higher the volume of

management – for those who wishes to enter or develop new reman markets,” Maria Bonelli believes. r

CoremanNet attracted a great deal of interest when presented at Automechanika, Frankfurt, in September 2012

It has been both a great opportunity and a pleasure to work for you over the last 29 years. I have learned so much from you about what it means to work for a trade association and that it is truly all about the members. From my first day at APRA until today your positive at-titude, generosity and kind nature have made it a pleasure to come to work. Wishing you all the best as your next chapter unfolds. I will miss you.- Kathy Olson, Director of Special Projects

With tears in my eyes, I want to express my gratitude to you for allowing me to be part of your APRA team. And your team is a large one - from your many members and associates around the globe, to your dedicated staff here at APRA. You mean so much to so many!

We have all benefited from your knowledge, photograph-ic memory, foresight, kindness, patience and your ability to spread your good nature and positive attitude. You are always available to offer advice, answer questions and solve problems for members, staff and industry folks around the world.

It makes me smile when I hear your infectious laughter around the office. You have taught me so much about this association, politics, life in general and even psycho squirrels! I am going to miss you so much, Big Kahuna! But you have prepared us well and as we move forward without you, I'm sure we will be asking ourselves on a daily basis,“What would Bill do?” I hope we make you proud and carry your legacy and APRA's success into the future. - Marlene Koskinas, Executive Assistant

The last three years, Bill, have been remarkable. While we have been friends for a number of years, the opportu-nity to work for and with you has been a Godsend. The APRA staff has been there a long time, too, because they are superior at what they do. This in itself is amazing!

Obviously, what I have seen from you in vision, respect, trust and belief in your staff, your attention to detail, pos-session of a thorough understanding of the rules, regula-tions, issues and protocol necessary to be a successful not-for-profit CEO, and significant accomplishments in a highly competitive international marketplace, underwrite what has made you a legend, not to be forgotten. I am grateful and honored to have had an opportunity to really get to know and appreciate the prominent gentleman and association leader you are and demonstrate every day.

Thank you, Bill! … and have and enjoy a great retirement which you have absolutely earned. - George Eliades, Member Liason

Knowing a person like Bill Gager has been a rare op-portunity and one of the highlights of my seven years of working with him. I have found him to be both a leader and a gentleman. His tenure over the past thirty-five years with the association has been one of leadership, joined with a well crafted program of expanded membership benefit and growth. His leadership and business acumen has earned him both national and international recogni-tion by the trade. It has been both a distinct pleasure to know him and a privilege to regard him as a personal friend. Although the torch has been passed, we are fully aware, that deep within his heart, rests a vision of con-tinued growth by the Automotive Parts Remanufacturing Association. We wish him good stead in his retirement.- Morris Spector, Director of Marketing and Advertising

Advertisers

Bill has been an indispensable resource during my twenty years of reporting on the electrical rebuilding industry. I will miss his knowledge, wisdom and generous spirit, and wish him the best of luck in retirement. - Traci Matt, Social Media Consultant

thus guaranteed original fit, original quality and original performance. Rebuilding saves the environment by reus-ing major components of the original product.”

With changes in the market, Simon says the volume of parts has dropped so it’s harder to find cores. He admits, “It’s a tough business to be in.”

The company has six employees, most of whom have ex-tensive experience in the rebuilding business. As a testa-ment to company’s fortitude and experience, Euro-Drive rebuilds many things that other companies are unwilling or unable to do. They have a strong business in rebuilding old tractor clutches.

Simon says his 18,000 sq. ft. building is “full to the rafters” with cores, facings, diaphragm springs, and more. “Every square inch is full of something. For us to down-size is not that easy, we would really have to throw some things out.”

Despite the challenges, Simon still believes there contin-ues to be room for a few small rebuilders. “Only because there are small things, like a tractor clutch, that are not available in the aftermarket other than through a small rebuilder.” r About the author: Gary McCoy is the president of Fair-way Communications, a public relations and marketing communications firm with a primary focus on the auto-motive and heavy duty aftermarket. He is responsible for helping market and promote the Global Automotive After-market Symposium. In addition, he is the public relations director for The Marx Group and the managing editor of Springs.
