PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS
Meeting the Challenges of Learning from Home I would like to sincerely thank every parent for the sacrifices you are making to support your children learning at home and for the way you are meeting the demands of parenting at this time.
We are very appreciative of the support parents have conveyed to teachers and the level of parent / teacher communication taking place. This together with the student work being submitted and Zoom check-ins, tells us that almost all students are actively engaging in daily learning.
Our teachers are following up with families when students are not engaged and are providing additional support. Considering the challenges of learning from home, we are delighted with the level of student engagement. I strongly encourage everyone to keep up the momentum as we move into week 5 of the term and beyond. Parent Certificates We would again like to congratulate our parents who are supporting Learning from Home with a special Learning from Home - Certificate for Parents (attached) that you can print and celebrate with your children for the way you have demonstrated resilience during this time.

Playground Supervision On-site In recent weeks the Department of Education has asked schools to reduce the number of staff on school sites. As a result, Drummoyne PS now has a 'skeleton staff' of 7 - 8 staff on site each day including the one executive in-charge, teachers and office staff. This is to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus and limit the number of close contacts if the school is closed because of an outbreak.
For lunch and recess play, we have combined the infants and primary students into one playground area. The area extends from the South Street gate to the Thompson Street gate. This has been working well given the small number of students on-site. The Rawson street (North) playground has been closed. Zoom sessions To support students learning from home, teachers are seeking to balance the direct teaching time on-line via Zoom and video with off-line work that students can complete independently and allow working parents to access the technology at home. Our teachers are aware that students can experience 'Zoom fatigue' and cognitive overload and so will vary explicit teaching one day via Zoom for example with independent work and direct feedback to individual students off-line. The number of Zoom sessions will also vary depending on the age of the students and the content being covered. Next week’s Zoom sessions are attached but please note that changes may need to be made during the week and these will be communicated by class teachers to students and families. Technology Parents are asked to please support children to access the ZOOM sessions and student resources. If you would like to borrow a laptop from the school, please email the office: [email protected]
With best wishes for the week ahead,
Brian J Dill PRINCIPAL

FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK
Birthday Congratulations We would like to acknowledge students who are celebrating their birthdays this week and wish them a special day. Congratulations to: Eva KH, Oliver KL, Katherine 1G, Billy 1M, Isabelle 1A, Aedan 1/2T, Deniz 3S, Phoebe 3W, Dean 4C, Georgia 5P, Madalene 5C, Deanna 5W & Agniia 6P. Learning from Home Attendance Thank you to all parents and caregivers who have been supporting their children’s learning at home. Our teachers have been working together to provide learning tasks and holding regular check-ins with students.
In relation to student attendance, if your child is participating in learning from home, they will be marked as being present at school. Teachers have been monitoring the submission of student work to determine this and also through regular conversations with parents for the younger years.
Students are not expected to participate in learning if they are unwell and as such will be marked as being on sick leave pending advice from parents or carers that they are unwell. Could I ask that you let your child’s teacher know via email or Seesaw if they are unwell.
Please contact the school if you have any questions or concerns in relation to student attendance. Dianne Colb DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Book Week in the style that we’d like to. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t mark the occasion! On Thursday 19 August, at 9:30am Drummoyne Public School will be joining a live stream performance of the Perform Education show Bigger, Better, Brighter!
Bigger, Better, Brighter! explores the 2021 CBCA Book Week theme: OLD WORLDS, NEW WORLDS, OTHER WORLDS, in an interactive and educational musical adventure!
Join Marley and characters from a selection of The CBCA 2021 Shortlisted Books, as she seeks to discover what it is that is missing and how best to recover it through a fun filled and energetic celebration of CBCA Book Week 2021 that brings together all the elements of great storytelling - a hero, a mystery, a quest, and an exploration!
The cost of the performance will be covered by the school and is free for all of our families. A link to the show will be made available closer to the performance date. We hope that you will all be able to join your children to watch the performance! Joseph Neufeld Teacher Librarian

INSIGHTS
Nurturing young boys’ friendships
There are a couple of factors in helping our kids in the early years at school. One is a warm connected relationship with theteacher or education assistant. The other is having at least one friend they can rely on at school.
Boy friendships are fragile
Since boys oen talk later (and less) than girls, little boys can struggle with friendships. I am astounded at the capacity of mostlittle girls to have real conversations that explore things friends have in common, help them play games and negotiate, andexperience mutually bonding moments. Girls also tend to have a better grasp on the non-verbal cues of building rapport such assmiling, waving, and hugging.
One of the world’s leading boy experts, Dr William Pollack, author of Real Boys, believes that while girls communicate more, boysseek connection more indirectly through activities or play. So, for boys to bond they need significant amounts of time spentplaying with other boys.
Boys need play to facilitate friendships
‘Play dates’ are a reasonably recent happening. Years ago, children tended to play for hours either in each other’s backyards orat sporting events. Now, less recess and lunch time at school, remote learning, and more emphasis on technology than real playis impacting this key window of building emotional and social skills.
We need to create opportunities outside of school. Finding families in your neighbourhood with kids of similar ages and older isstill an excellent way of creating friendships. Yes, it involves some scheduling, but many families still make time to gather maybeone aernoon a week in the same playground with the same grownups and kids to create cohesion.
Play has many benefits other than the obvious one of helping our boys discharge excess energy and stress. Unstructured playhelps to create feel-good neurochemicals, especially when it allows kids to follow the oen-unspoken randomness of boy playwhich frequently includes adventures, hunts, and targets. It teaches them to lose, to wait, to take turns and much more.
Coaching young boys
I oen share the story of the little boy who at the end of the day at school ran up to his best little mate and punched him in thehead. In no way did this little boy mean to hurt his friend however at that moment his actions, which looked confusing toeverybody, were an attempt to express how much he liked his friend and how much he was going to miss him.
Helping boys to create (and practice!) welcoming and farewell strategies can help alleviate some of these awkward moments.Giving a high five, having a secret handshake, teaching them to smile and calling out ‘hello’ using their friend’s name are allgreat strategies to coach and teach.
Provided as a part of our school’s Parenting Ideas membership parentingideas.com.au
Having a friend at school can make a huge dierence to our boys, but sometimes they need a little help from parents to findtheir way.
