The stone was rolled away

The stone which was rolled away from the tomb of Jesus continues to roll away from every sort of grave. Goodness cannot be held, captured, or put to death. It evades its pursuers, escapes capture, slips away, hides out, even leaves the churches sometimes, but forever rises, again and again, all over the world. Such is the meaning of the resurrection.

We see during the earthly life of Jesus a number of passages in the Gospels which give the impression that Jesus was somehow difficult to detain. When the authorities tried to arrest him in the temple area we are told simply that “he slipped away,” and in another incident “no one laid a hand upon him because his hour had not yet come.”

These stories of his “slipping away” are highly symbolic. The lesson is that the word of God, the grace of God, the good-ness of God, and power of God can never be captured, held captive, or ultimately killed. Even when seemingly they are killed, the stone that entombs them always eventually rolls back and releases them. Goodness continues to resurrect from every sort of grave.

In the resurrection of Jesus, God shows that goodness and love will triumph! They put his dead body in a tomb and sealed it with a stone, but the stone rolled away. His disciples abandoned him in his trials, but they eventually returned more committed than ever. They persecuted and killed his first disciples, but that only served to spread his message. Goodness cannot be killed. Believe it! We only need to live in the face of that wonderful truth. The ending of our story, both that of our world and that of our lives, is already written – goodness is guaranteed. Kindness will meet us.

Welcome to those who have joined the Church The Paschal Mystery is the key to our Christian faith: the dying and rising of Jesus that is the pattern of our life. In their first steps on the road of faith, the catechumens felt the cross of glory traced over their eyes, on their lips, across their shoulders, on their ears, over their heart, and on their feet. The mystery is that even death gives way to life for those who are held in the embrace of Jesus. This Easter, new Christians arise from the waters of the font, come to the table of the Lord, and are anointed with Holy Chrism. Yet the font is not the destination of their journey, it is the beginning. The goal is Pentecost, fifty days from now, and a lifetime of praise to the Father, in Christ, with the Holy Spirit, for the sake of the world. “Neophyte,” an ancient word for the newly-baptized, means “newly-planted” in Greek. Don’t forget to welcome and congratulate those in our parish who have just been initiated. The smiles on their faces and the light in the eyes is a foretaste of heaven. Bobby, Dion, Donny, Genevieve, Jafrieda, Jonathan, Lisa, and Rob.

PROCLAIM THE RISEN CHRIST

On Easter morning everything—the spring weather, the flowers, birds and butterflies, the people around us in their finery, the beautiful liturgy and music—everything seems to Bear witness that Jesus Christ is risen today! Like the Eyewitness accounts in today’s scriptures, the glorious and joyful life all around us helps us to believe the good news of the Resurrection and sing “Alleluia!” In the scriptures today we hear from Peter and Paul and John. All three speak with conviction about witnessing the resur-rected Christ. John’s Gospel account includes Mary of Magdala, who also was privileged to witness the Resurrection and tell others the good news. On this glorious Easter Sunday can we ourselves give eyewitness accounts that Jesus Christ is risen today, alive and active in our lives?

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Peter is an eyewitness: The Lord is risen (Acts 10:34a, 37-43). Psalm — This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad (Psalm 118). Second Reading — Christ our Passover is sacrificed; therefore let us celebrate (1 Corinthians 5:6b-8). Gospel — Three witnesses, Mary, Peter, and John; each re-sponds to the empty tomb (John 20:1-9)

to allow greater participation in the fruits of labor and creation.
