What Does the Future
Hold for Health
Insurance?
The Greece Chamber of Commerce has
been providing health insurance plans to the
business community for over two decades. I
have been with the Chamber for only the 6.5 years but in
that short time we have already seen an immense amount of
changes within the health insurance arena.
We all know that at the end of this year the bulk of the
Affordable Care Act goes into place. Recently the Federal
Government took the unusual step of delaying the employer
mandate portion of the Act for larger employers (50
employees+). Having sat through a number of training
sessions and talked to a variety of people who are intimately
involved with the details of the huge law I personally think
this was a wise step. The simple fact of the matter is that this
is a very, very large bill and the government does not have
all the regulations in place to make it start for January 2014.
Reading that might make you excited to think that
means nothing is changing but I have to share with you that
is not true. First of all, New York State is not the Federal
Government and they are very much moving ahead with
their portion of the reform. Who will that impact? Primarily
the small business market.
Whether or not you get your insurance from the
Greece Chamber, there are ways we can help your business
navigate these tricky waters ahead. First of all, we’re
providing several upcoming FREE training opportunities
for you to attend and find out more about all the changes
that area ahead. Remember, this is a dynamic law – the
pieces and parts are still in motion – so (hopefully) each
month we get closer to January 1st the more definite
information we will have.
Second, keep a close eye on our newsletter and
email blasts because as the State continues to roll out
information, we will continue to pass it along to our
members.
Finally, here are a few really important things for
you to know about reform:
The Greece Chamber will continue in our role as a fully
licensed insurance broker both inside and outside the
new Exchanges that are being set up.
The State of NY will be running two Exchanges:
Individuals & Sole Proprietors and the SHOP (Small
Business, 2-50 employees). Again, we’ll be able to help
you in either one of these exchanges.
Pretty much every insurance plan in the state will be
changing in some form or fashion at the end of the year
to come into compliance with the minimum benefits
required. Unfortunately, what exactly those changes
are have not been announced yet, but we (cont’ on page 5)

cont’ from cover—What Does the Future Hold for Health
Insurance do believe ancillary services such as
vision coverage will probably be going
away on many plans.
There will still be high deductible plans
available both inside and outside the
exchanges but they may look a little
different.
You may qualify for tax subsidies as an
individual (or sole proprietor) or a tax
deduction as a small business to help you
pay for health insurance coverage. We
will be able to help you to figure out
what you qualify for.
Rates for the plans on the Exchanges are
due to be released sometime in August. Remember – call the Chamber office with any
questions you have. We’re here to help you
figure out what is ahead for health insurance!

Why should you form an
advisory board? An advisory board can
help grow your business, avoid common
pitfalls, and tap into the experiences of
people who you can’t afford to hire full
time. Unlike a formal board of directors, an
advisory board is an informal group of
outside advisers who don’t have
governance over you or your firm. Advisory
board members act as coaches and safe
sounding boards to help solve problems,
hone your strategy, and attack new
opportunities.
Advisory boards force you to set aside time
to think strategically, give you a forum to be
100% open and vulnerable without
repercussions from a formal board, and
serve as a sharp external lens through which
to view yourself and your company.
Whom should you select? Draw five
circles on a blank piece of paper
representing the areas of your business in
which you need the most help and that have
the best growth potential. Write down the
names of your dream advisers in each area,
and use your network to connect with them.
The best advisory board members are
strong communicators, are problem solvers,
have experience in your field, and have
undergone successes and failures.
Once you’ve chosen your targets, meet with
them in person to gauge their energy level
and chemistry before inviting them to join
your board. After they’ve accepted, consider
drafting a simple one-page agreement that
covers nondisclosure, a noncompete clause,
compensation, and expected time
commitment. My best advisers have felt a
sense of duty to the next generation of
entrepreneurs and genuinely enjoy helping,
but they expect compensation. I have found
that paying a reasonable per meeting fee in
cash and issuing stock options with two-
year vesting work best.
What does an advisory board work
on? Typical advisory board projects include
helping with your annual strategic plan,
penetrating new markets, improving the
performance of your executive team, and
recruiting key hires. How often does an advisory board
meet? My advisory board meets in person
at least once a year for half a day to review
the prior year and dig into objectives for the
current year. We then meet quarterly to
review progress, plan, and focus on a
particular problem area or growth area.
Finally, we have a 1-hour update call each
month. I recommend that you nail down the
schedule for the full year and stick to it. Where do advisory boards meet? At
least one of the live meetings should be at
your company. I like to rotate other
meetings at an adviser’s place of business or
at an industry trade show. Use zoom.us,
webex, or Skype for remote group
videoconferencing.—Kenny Hawk, CEO/
Founder, Brandboards (article published in Free
Enterprise Magazine July 2013)
