Student to Citizen Series ContinuesNo Logo: Brands, Globalization & Resistance

In the age o the brand, logos are everywhere. But why dosome o the worlds best-known brands nd themselves onthe wrong end o the spray paint canthe targets o anti-corporate campaigns by activists and protesters? No Logo, based on the best-selling book by Canadian journalist andactivist Naomi Klein, reveals the reasons behind the back-

lash against the increasing economic and cultural reach omultinational companies. Analyzing how brands like Nike,The Gap, and Tommy Hilger became revered symbolsworldwide, Klein argues that globalization is a processwhereby corporations discovered that prots lay not in mak-ing products (outsourced to low-wage workers in developingcountries), but in creating branded identities people adopt in their liestyles.Using hundredso media examples, No Logo shows how the commercial takeover o public space, destructiono consumer choice, and replacement o real jobs with temporary workthe dynamics ocorporate globalizationimpact everyone, everywhere. It also draws attention to the demo-

cratic resistance arising globally to challenge the hegemony o brands.Tuesday, April 13 at 9pm

Insightful conversations about climate changeApril 1 Is Your God Green?

What would Jesus say about cli-

mate change? What does the Torahsay about stewardship o Godscreation? Leaders rom dierentreligious traditions discuss howtheir respective philosophies and scriptures guide their approach to todays energy challenges, and how congregations around the country are getting involved in the movement to build acleaner energy uture.

April 8 Fossil Fuels + Dependence = Security Risks? What do military ocers think about the United States reliance on oil? One group o

retired brass concluded that it threatens economic stability and national security. ViceAdmiral Dennis McGinn (retired) says 12 people studied scientic data and energymodels or more than a year and concluded that the Pentagon should clearly integrate energyand climate change into its strategy and operations. Beeng up the countrys creaky andvulnerable electric grid, pushing hard on energy eciency, driving toward electric militaryvehicles and pursuing renewable uels, they say, would reduce the burden on soldiers overseasand make the country stronger.

April 15 Electric Transmission: Enabling a Smart GridAs America continues to develop clean, non-carbon-based electricity, our century-old

electric grid is emerging as a major bottleneck. Meanwhile, public-policy oversight o electricpower is a hodgepodge o 50 dierent states approaches to regulation. Mason Willrich,(Board Chair o the Caliornia Independent System Operator and a Director o the Calior-nia Clean Energy Fund) illustrates the problem, with special insight into Caliornias situa-tion, and lays out a program or developing a 21st-century system.

April 22 Global WarringThe changing climate now has the attention o military establishments around the world.

Last year, or example, the CIA created a group ocused on tracking the national-securityimplications o desertication, rising sea levels, population shits and heightened competitionor natural resources. What will the opening o the Arctic mean or Russian access into North

American waters? Will Chinas lack o clean, resh water undermine its global ambitions? WillIndias increasingly erratic monsoon aect its economic growth? These and other pressingquestions will be answered.

April 29 Cap and Charade?Would capping and trading carbon pollution create a prosperous clean energy economy?

Or would it be a boondoggle or Wall Street and scammers in developing countries? Whiletouted as a market-based way to put a price on carbon, cap and trade has been parodied byJon Stewart as the superhero Cap N Trade and is increasingly questioned by environmental-ists and regulators. Yet the state o Caliornia and many companies have a lot invested in a

cap-and-trade system. Will it die a slow death? Should it? What would be a better way tocreate a global price or greenhouse gases? Well have a town hall conversation about cap andtrade with a ervent skeptic, a true believer and you.Thursdays at 7 pm

Expressing serious concern at what she saw as an alarmingly low level o cholesterol, Ms.Fallon explained that cholesterol is necessary to think clearly, to react well to a variety osituations and to handle stress.

That President Obamas cholesterol has risen modestly during his year in oce shouldhardly be a surprise. Stress, including that o worrying about your cholesterol level can makeit rise. Is it pathology or is it the bodys natural wisdom? Well explore the question in depthon April 11, when Sally Fallon will beMouthulsguest or the ull hour.
