Jeff Perry General Manager

If you have been following this column and the golf fitness series over the past few months you probably are beginning to understand the importance of golf fitness for performance and injury prevention. Golf fitness is to golf what

building a good retirement fund is to you. You understand that a retirement fund is built off of common sense and smart and steady growth and not always searching for the “get rich quick” speculative stock. The “get rich quick” is equal to looking for the hottest new tip, club, or ball. Golf fitness is the right way to build not only your golf game but to improve the function of your entire body, from the ground up

I have partnered up with Dr. Mike Wasilisin of the Titleist Elite Performance Institute located at PureFitness in Carlsbad to solicit some of his expertise on helpful tips that can be beneficial to the golf swing which may also transition to a healthier everyday lifestyle. Again, the goal of these pieces is to simply point out that there are many simple and easy ways to improve your golf game; with the added benefit of improving your overall physical fitness.

Recapping on the past few months, you now understand that the glutes are the engine of the golf swing and are responsible for creating hip power. Core strength is important not only to protect the low back from injuries (#1 injury in amateurs), but to effectively transfer the power from the ground to the shoulders, arms, and ultimately the club. Finally, last month you learned a key exercise to increase your rotation in your middle back, which equals more power. If you missed any of these articles and would like to review their contents and the exercises recommended to build the muscles already discussed, they can be found in our past issues of The Currents online at www.TheCrossingsatCarlsbad.com. In this column, I will continue with the building blocks of the swing: balance.

Balance is as equally important of all of the predecessors. Golf requires the same skill set as all other sports, only applied slightly different. Without good balance you will lose ball striking consistency with unlevel lies. Your brain will have to do more work than necessary to keep your weight over your center of gravity, making costly micro-adjustments at impact that mean the difference between hitting it flush and catching it off the toe and leaving it in the bunker. These are just a few examples of many of how poor balance can hurt your game.

So you think your balance is pretty good, huh? OK well let’s check it out. Begin by standing with your feet together in good posture and your arms at your side. Bring your right thigh up so it is parallel to the ground (see picture). When you are ready, close your eyes! Count how long you can hold your balance without airplaning, or swaying around like you are drunk. You can even give yourself 2-3 tries. Do you have your number? Titleist Performance Institute has evaluated over 75 touring pros and found an average of 15 seconds. Did you beat it? Probably not, we find that the average is just less than 5 seconds. Just an FYI, we have you shut your eyes because we shut off the visual system (the eyes) and really test the nervous system.

One of the top 3 exercises to improve your balance is called a Stork Turn. This exercise will also improve your hip and low body motion in the swing. Begin in the testing position with your left thigh parallel to the ground in good posture. Keeping your upper body facing straight ahead, rotate your knee to the right, across your body, and then return back to the starting position. Repeat 30 times per leg, every other day, and you will take your game to the next level..

For more information on fitness and injuries beyond these articles or if you would like a more detailed tutorial on how to perform these exercises; email Dr. Mike at [email protected] or visit www.epiclinics.com

THE CROSSINGS AT CARLSBAD | April 2010

Gary GlaserPGA, Director of Golf

This month I would like to share my thoughts about what is probably the most memo-rable hole on the course. Memories can be funny, they might be fond or sometimes not so fond but the 18th hole always provides one or the other.

Like many holes on this course it looks a lot tougher off the tee than it really is and the approach looks a lot easier than it really is. Getting the right distance on your approach shot is paramount. The multi-tiered green can be a monster, so take your time and look at your putt from at least two different angles. You should only be aggressive on this hole when the pin is in the left or middle.

If it is on the peninsula to the right be very careful when choosing your final option. A higher than desired score may await you if you don’t have the perfect distance with the perfect spin when the pin is out there!

If you go for it when the pin is in any tough position on this hole you may have a very memorable birdie or a very memorable double bogey.

TIP: Play your game, don’t let the hole get you out of your comfort zone. That is when most of us make our worst shots.

As always, good golfing.

GLASER ON GOLFSteve Vaughan PGA, Director of Instruction

Stay off your toes for better balance

I continue to see many of my students struggle with

balance throughout the course of a golf swing. The main reason for this is, they are starting with too much weight over their toes. I have seen many students with a great set up and then right before starting their swing, they lean too much on to their toes.

I would suggest, that if you make a mistake in this area it is better to feel a little more weight towards your heels than too much weight over your toes. If you get too much weight over your toes you can start hitting shanks and losing your balance after impact. So sit back a little and hit better golf shots.

GOLF TIP

18th Hole facts:

• 407 yards at its longest, 318 yards at its shortest.

• Directional flow of the tee shot West (tee shot) to NW into the green.

• Clubhouse in the backdrop frames hole nicely.

• Bunkers left / Hazard right

• The green is very shallow but very wide with a peninsula that the pin is on 1 out of every 7 days!

• Course difficulty rating #2 (all tees)

mimi,my buddies & I are looking to put together a reunion at the end of the summer including a golf tournament. Do you have any recom-mendations on how we should handle the post round dinner and drinks? We’ll have about 24-32 players. Please help! Thanks! randyask mImI

Randy,

I’m more than happy to help you with this, as Food and Beverage surrounding tournaments is my specialty! My first thought is to have you think about what you most enjoy when you go to play a round of golf

after 18 holes of golf, personally, I’m famished, so I like to head up to the clubhouse to relax and grab a bite to eat. for you, I would recommend reserving a private room for you and your buddies, so that you can sit, chat and enjoy at your leisure. This gives you piece of mind, knowing that everything will be taken care of before you arrive. In regards to food and beverage, I would suggest setting up a buffet that’s ready for them to enjoy as they come off the course; our most popular buffet is the Carrillo ranch barbecue buffet. for beverages, my suggestion is to have a satellite bar in the room specifically for you, setup with your favorite beverages.

There are other things that I recommend to the tournaments that I work with, including having a bagged lunch ready to start as they get in their carts or offering drink tickets that are good for a bottled water or a beer while on the course, these drink tickets can be redeemed at the beverage cart or snack bar. however, I think the above is a good start to getting your head around putting this all together.

best of luck to you in the planning process, and please know we are always here to help!
