What can you do to help your company excel in this eco-nomic climate? Products and services have been commodi-tized. Very few companies maintain a long-lasting edge ininnovation.

The best competitive advantage you have, and the one youhave the most control over is your people. And when itcomes to generating revenues, this means your sales andsales management teams. Talented and productive peopleare today’s new competitive advantage. Given the properinvestment in training and development, they will make adifference between success and failure for any company inany economy. So why aren’t most companies making thistype of on-going, long term investment training with theirteams?

Many falsely believe that sales and sales managementskills are more art than science. Who hasn’t heard it saidthat someone is a “born sales person” or a “born leader?”Building a high performance sales and sales managementteam involves training of proven sales and managementprocesses and methodologies just as one would expect ofany professional discipline.

If you don’t have process and systems to manage anddevelop against, anything you try and implement will beineffective. If you have ten sales people selling ten differ-ent ways, you ultimately have ten different cultures and tendifferent excuses. It is difficult to manage, grow or developthem. If you hear about or experience time managementissues, look to a lack of sales and management systems asa primary cause. Since you have no way to measure andbenchmark consistency, you are left with inconsistency.

What makes great sports teams consistently good? Not somuch their players, but the system within which they learnand develop. The same holds true for your company. It’stime to invest in your sales and sales management team-your human capital, for your biggest competitive advan-tage. Written by Joe Ippolito, March 2011

growth bodes well for 6th District

Newly released U.S. Census data showed the 6th EssexRegion's population grew by more than 2 percent over thelast decade, a trend North Shore leaders hope will helpprotect the area from the ax of redistricting.

The population of Essex County climbed by 2.7 percentfrom 2000 to 2010, according to census figures postedyesterday. By contrast, several regions in westernMassachusetts, including Berkshire, Franklin andBarnstable counties, all saw population losses.

"We're in the growth pack," said Bill Luster, the executivedirector of the North Shore Alliance for EconomicDevelopment. Luster ran his own calculations based onthe census data yesterday and found that the 6thCongressional District grew by 2.1 percent over the last10 years — a significant increase as state lawmakers workto identify how to reduce the commonwealth's 10 con-gressional districts to nine.

"If you place us against other counties, Essex County hasgrown a respectable amount," said Luster. "It gives somecredence to the idea that as redistricting continues, theareas that have grown should stay represented as such."That might put a target on the two districts out in westernMassachusetts, split mostly between Congressmen JohnOlver and Richard Neal.

"If it were completely driven by census, that might be thelogical step, consolidating the First and Second," saidstate Rep. John Keenan, D-Salem, who serves on the leg-islative redistricting committee.

But Keenan cautioned: "I really have no idea how it'sgoing to play out."

It was an unusual and confusing morning for those await-ing census results yesterday. Story continued atnorthshorechamber.blogspot.com
