Spring News Letter 2011 Crime news: Recent crime trends have been the theft of scrap metal and oil theft.
As a result of this the SNT have made these two issues our current Priorities. In relation to oil thefts we are advising that oil tanks are screened from view using fencing and plantation. We are interested in any suspicious vehicles seen either touting for scrap metals or seen with oil drums or piping.
We have also seen an increase in break-ins to outbuildings we are advising that sheds and garages are kept locked and items stored within need to be marked with postcodes to prevent theft. Alarms and padlocks can be purchased from the SNT at £10 each, or from hardware shops.
Good news stories: Catalytic converter marking: The SNT security marked over 25 vehicles with special paint and engraved the number plate into the Catalytic converter to prevent theft. This event took place at Barley Green Garage, Stradbroke on 21st February 2011.
Welly Walk: Pupils at Wortham Primary school recently did a Welly Walk to help raise awareness of speeding on the A143 near to the school and were assisted by the SNT in crossing the road and having the Speed Monitor Display at the site throughout the day.
Migrant worker Engagements: Workers at Vion foods , Gressingham foods and Crown Poultry were visited by Police and Migrant Liaison Officers to help build links between the foreign workers and police. Leaflets were taken to the workers which had been translated into Polish, Lithuanian, Portuguese and Romanian.
Connect Weekend: The SNT will be holding meetings and visits to all 44 Parishes within the district on the weekend of March 25th, 26th, 27th we will be giving seminars on crime prevention, conducting speed checks and handing out advice leaflets.
The next SNT tasking meeting is on May 3rd at Bedfield Sports pavilion at 7:30pm. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. In Priory Road, Palgrave between 10.00pm Monday 28th February and 5.30amTuesday 1st March entry was gained to a residential property via an insecure door and two handbags stolen from within. Both handbags were later recovered nearby with cash missing. Were you in the area between these times, did you notice any unusual activity? Anyone with information relating to this burglary is asked to contact Mid-Suffolk Police on 01284 774100 reference ST/11/668

March Star Many of you may have noticed that the March Star was rather late, this was due firstly to a computer virus and secondly a problem at the printers. The loose page in last months edition was because two pages had been missed in the printing process. Hopefully all will run smoothly this month.
FRIENDS OF CHERNOBYL CHILDREN
On the 15th July twelve children plus interpreters arrive for a month long visit, they come from villages affected by the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Two children and two interpreters will be staying in Palgrave. We are having a stall at the craft fair on 16th April at the Community Centre to raise money for clothes, shoes etc. We shall be arranging a varied programme of activities all of which will need funding. Please come along and give your support.
DISS FIRST RESPONDERS We are a group of volunteers who respond to emergency calls in the area where we live or work, on behalf of the East of England Ambulance Service. Our aim is to reach a potential life threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the Ambulance crew arrive on scene. Community First Responders are dispatched to the patient by Ambulance Control to an area where the ambulance cannot realistically reach the collapsed patient within the first 8 minutes. Our purpose is to try to make a difference in our community, helping to stabilise the collapsed patient and, in doing so, help to keep the patient alive until the arrival of the more highly skilled Ambulance crew, who are trained to undertake further life saving techniques. We use our own vehicles, and pay for our own fuel when we are on call, and claim no expenses for mileage.
To help pay for updated kit, and raise funds towards a dedicated vehicle for the group, I am embarking on a 200 mile cycle ride around the circumference of Norfolk at Easter. A dedicated vehicle will give the group a greater presence on the road, and raise our profile within the local community. We are not allowed to put sirens or flashing lights on our own cars, and have to obey normal traffic regulations as does any other motorist or road user. Our own car can be covered in emergency service decals etc., and hopefully make us more visible to other road users.
Any help that you feel you can provide would be much appreciated. My telephone number is 01379 652495. Kevin Mobbs, Palgrave

OPEN GARDENS WEEKEND 25th/26th June
Many thanks to those residents who have already volunteered to open their garden. To make this event happen we need more villagers to open their gardens. WITHOUT YOUR HELP THIS EVENT WILL NOT HAPPEN. Still at an early stage but we would like to have as many gardens as possible open. It could be your front garden, your back garden, both or even just your patio area. All residents of Palgrave are invited to open their garden. We hope to show a diverse range of gardens large, small, formal, cottage etc (or even like my own edging towards the untidy). Your garden could be open for only one of the days if this is more convenient. We plan to have an evening the following week where the open garden hosts could visit each others gardens so you will not miss out!
Proceeds will help fund the rising cost of keeping the Community Centre open. Please help support your Community Centre and make this an enjoyable event for the whole village.
If you think your garden is not good enough or of no interest then you are probably wrong. We are not looking for every garden to be immaculate! To volunteer your OPEN GARDEN please contact Helen Thorburn tel.01379 651749 email [email protected] or Pat Simms tele 01379 643629

Palgrave Gardening and Social Group On 7th March the group were delighted by an entertaining talk by Laurence Flatman, retired director of Blooms, illustrated by old photographs and a selection of plant specimens. On Monday 4 April at 10.30 am at Palgrave Community Centre
the group are organising a
Container & Hanging Basket Planting Demonstration with Sue Allison Do come along to find out how to plant up a wonderful display in containers and baskets for this year. This is open to everyone from Palgrave and beyond. The cost is £2.50 (£2.00 for PGSG members) and includes coffee/tea and biscuits
. COACH TRIP TO BARNSDALE GARDENS Monday 6th June The group will be visiting Barnsdale Gardens, Rutland, legacy of Geoff Hamilton including an hour coach tour around the lake. Departure from Palgrave is at 9.00am, expecting to return at approximately 6.00pm. The cost is £17.00, including coach fare and entrance. There are still some vacancies. Anyone interested in the above or membership of the group please contact Sheila on 01379 643393
Tip of the Month The garden centres will be filling now with small bedding plants of all sorts for less than a pound each. If you buy, for example, a fuchsia (why not try Thalia for a change?), an argyranthemum, a trailing petunia and that useful grey leaved trailer helichrysum petiolare , bring them home and pot them on, they will grow away rapidly. You can then take several cuttings from each plant. They strike quickly at this time of year. By the time you plant up your containers next month you will have quite a variety of small free plants. Thought for the Month
I don’t believe the half I hear Nor the quarter of what I see! But I have one faith, sublime and true, That nothing can shake or slay; Each spring I firmly believe anew All the seed catalogues say! Carolyn Wells

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
PIG UNIT LION ROAD
At the Parish Council meeting on 16th March 2011 Alistair Bryce explained to the Parish Council and the public that the burning of pig litter (the straw in the farrowing huts) was a necessary environmental control in running that sort of operation. The District Council and DEFRA are aware of the procedures and they are approved by them. It is understood that the burning which happens about once every three weeks does cause problems to some nearby residents. To minimise that problem Mr Bryce has provided a list of the dates when burning should occur, although they could move to be one day later in the event of bad weather. There are two pig units, the first known as Wortham, is on the south side of Lion Road. The second known as Palgrave is on the north side of Lion Road. The burning dates are: Wortham Palgrave 24th March 14th April 5th May 26th May 16th June 7th July 28th July 18th August 8th September 27th September 20th October 10th November 1st December 22nd December ………………………………………………………………………………………………………… We now have vacancies to be filled, and elections are due to be held in May. The role of us all in our communities is increasingly being talked about. If you would like to consider joining the Parish Council please contact one of the Councillors or Anne Coates, the Clerk. Contact details and dates of meetings are displayed in the Community Centre, on the Parish Council notice board at the entrance to Forge Close and on the web site www.onesuffolk.co.uk/PalgravePC.

PALGRAVE WALKING GROUP Our group, which now regularly attracts over 20 walkers, meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month leaving Palgrave Community Centre at 9.45 a.m. Everyone is welcome to join our friendly group but it is regretted that dogs cannot be allowed on our walks. Additionally Palgrave Walking Group or its walk leaders cannot be held liable for any injury sustained whilst on any walk they organise. If you would like further details please contact Brian Beecroft. Telephone 01379 642208. April Walks Tuesday 12th April 2011 Brian and Lyn Horner will lead us on a 4 ½ miles circular walk on footpaths, field edges and quiet lanes between the villages of Pulham Market and Pulham St. Mary. There are a few stiles on the route but otherwise the going will be flat and easy. After the walk we take refreshments at a local public house. If you wish to join us on this walk please be at Palgrave Community Centre car park ready to leave for the starting point at 9.45 a.m. Tuesday 26th April 2011 This walk, to be lead by Roger and Margaret Coomber, is 5 miles long and almost circumnavigates Palgrave village. Starting and finishing at the Community Centre, the walk is on field edges, footpaths, permissive footpaths and minor roads. There are 2 stiles and some potentially muddy stretches. For the first time we will be walking along the permissive footpath created in 2010 by Paul Whiting along the River Waveney between Denmark Bridge and Star Cottage which, with permission given by a local farmer to walk along his field edges, will enable us to link up with the excellent footpath network around Palgrave. After the walk we will transfer to a local public house for refreshments. If you wish to join us on this walk please be at Palgrave Community Centre ready to leave at 9.45 a.m.
