Palgrave Gardening and Social Group
On Monday 4 April a very good gathering of club members and guests enjoyed an hour’s talk by Sue Allison, including some very useful tips. She showed slides and gave a demonstration on planting up hanging baskets and pots, using some very unusual, pretty plants. Due to unforeseen circumstances there will not be a PGSG meeting in May. However, tentative plans are being made to visit Fullers Mill, Bury St Edmunds, on Wednesday afternoon 18 May. If anyone is interested, please contact Sheila True on 01379 643393.
COACH TRIP TO BARNSDALE GARDENS Monday 6th June
The group will be visiting Barnsdale Gardens, Rutland, legacy of Geoff Hamilton, including an hour coach tour around the lake. Departure from Palgrave is at 9.00 am, expecting to return approximately 6.00 pm. The cost is £17.00, including coach fare and entrance. Anyone interested in the above or membership of the group please contact Sheila True.
Tip of the Month
Wallflowers are now at their best – but you must get sowing next year’s seeds! Thought for the Month A garden is the purest of human pleasures. It is the greatest refreshment to the spirits of man, without which buildings and palaces are but gross handiworks.

Nature Notes by David Garnham Many of our summer migrants have arrived back, chiff‐chaff were here late March followed in early April by house martin. Swallows are just here and cuckoo should arrive any day. Bill Wilsher tells me of blackcap on 3rd of April, we had them here on the 7th. Have you seen the buzzards circling over Palgrave? I think they must be nesting in Stuston as we see them circling over the valley every day. Ann told me of an interesting sighting, early in April after a little research we identified them as bee flies they are the size of a small bee of similar colour with a proboscus. They were feeding on early spring flowers. There are a
few deer around but not as many as other years. David Drake spoke to me about buzzards over Stuston, David got a great sighting while on the A143 near the Palgrave junction. If all is quiet you can hear them calling overhead with a soft mewing call like a kitten. Never be afraid to lie on your back and watch the sky, I have done this today Sunday 17th April and seen many buzzards, kestrel, sparrowhawk, gulls etc etc. DONT FORGET THE BIRD WALK ON MAY 15TH, 6.00AM AT THE COMMUNITY CENTRE. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
Early Morning Birdwalk Sunday 15th May
It is now two years since we have held an Early Morning Birdwalk with our Nature Notes Palgrave resident David Garnham. After a walk of approximately 2½ hours spotting wildlife we return to the Community Centre for a cooked breakfast at around 8.30am prepared by our willing cooks.
The cost will be £8.00, £7.00 for members. Please be at the Community Centre at 5.50am ready for a prompt start at 6.00am. Wear suitable footwear and avoid bright coloured clothing. Booking is essential. Please contact Pauline (07554945682) or Pat (643629)

A LIFE IN MUSIC - TALK BY MERLIN CHANNON
Friday 24th June 7.00pm at Palgrave Community Centre
A LIFE IN MUSIC - TALK BY MERLIN CHANNON, Friday 24th June Dr Merlin Channon, organist at St Peter's Church, is also an entertaining raconteur with a lifetime's worth of interesting anecdotes to tell. Musician, teacher, conductor of ten amateur orchestras and choirs, music researcher, artist, and schools inspector; Merlin has also found time for cricket and been a long time member of the MCC. Merlin recalls - 'A few things that happened to him on and by the way' - with a few musical interruptions. The talk is in aid of Palgrave Church repairs and improvements. Tickets £5.00 (with refreshments).
PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
The next Parish Council meeting will be on Wednesday 4th May. This will be the Annual Parish Meeting when reports for the past year will be presented by representatives from the Parish Council, District and County Councillors, the Community Council, Church and School. Please come along to hear about activities in the village, or if you want to raise any questions for the Parish Council. The following week (May 11th) the Annual Parish Council meeting will be held when the Chairman and Vice Chairman are elected and members of committees are agreed. Diane Pattenden has not stood for election on 5th May. She has been a Parish Councillor for a number of years and we thank her for her contributions to the meetings. There were not enough nominations for an election to be held and so the remaining Councillors stay in office. If you are interested in becoming a Parish Councillor please come along to any of the meetings, find out what is involved and make yourself known to us. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………… Contact details and dates of meetings are displayed in the Community Centre, on the Parish Council notice board at the entrance to Forge Close and on the web site www.onesuffolk.co.uk/PalgravePC.

PALGRAVE LITTER PICK DAY A BIG THANK YOU!
May I on behalf of all the residents of Palgrave thank the twenty two litter pickers who turned up on Sunday 17th April at 10.00am and also those people that helped the week before, to clear the village of litter. Every road in the village (except the small cul-de-sacs) was cleared within three hours. It is a sad reflection on our times, that between us we collected 38 bags of litter that MSDC will now collect. Thank you all again, for giving your time. John Sparks Palgrave Litter Co-ordinator PS. Residents opposite the church bus-stop have asked me to pass on our thanks also to the school children who when waiting for the bus in the mornings do not leave any litter- thank you all!
