Palgrave Local History –Are YOU interested?

Ken Nockles has been looking at the censuses for Palgrave and has found a number of intriguing facts about the village and its inhabitants. Palgrave is an ancient village and is mentioned in the Domesday Book as having two churches. All of this has prompted the notion of researching and then writing a history of Palgrave. Ken has approached the Community Council with the idea of forming a Palgrave History Group. If you would be interested in getting involved please phone Ken Nockles on 651599.

“YOGA: IF YOU CAN BREATHE, YOU CAN DO IT”...

Andy Murray is doing it; Roy Keane is doing it; so is Andrew Strauss**. Children are

doing it and seventy-five year-old grandmothers and grandfathers are doing it.

And almost certainly each one of them is benefiting from their yoga practice in their

own individual way.

People have been practising yoga for thousands of years, so it is truly tried and tested.

Yet the west has only relatively recently caught on to the remarkable transformations

that can take place in our bodies, our minds, and our beings through the regular

practice of yoga.

Yoga can be practised at many levels and modified to suit the practitioner, which is

why it is accessible to such a variety of different people, and hence the adage: "if you

can breathe, you can practise yoga".

It is non-competitive, so progress is experienced purely on a personal level.

It can help conditions such as depression, low mood and anxiety; it can eradicate

tendencies towards excess such as over-eating and instead helps us be moderate in

our actions, and thus find our natural weight.

Regular practice taps into our ability to welcome gentle discipline into our lives which

can help us make better life-choices, and may support our efforts to curb damaging

habits in our lives such as smoking or drinking alcohol to excess.

It compliments regular physical activities such as running or cycling, and can remove

the tension that builds up from sitting in front of a computer for too long. Yoga can

build up strength and flexibility and at the same time helps to calm the mind.

With links to philosophy and psychology, and surrounded by myths, yoga has many

dimensions to it; people choose to experience it at the level that suits them at any

particular time. It does make a rewarding and fascinating journey.

One of my current Palgrave students summed up her experience as follows: “I

absolutely love our yoga class, and come away not only feeling much more supple, but

calm and relaxed too.” Perhaps it's time to give it a go?

Palgrave Gardening and Social Group

The group’s visit to three gardens in Hoxne was an enormous success.

Each wonderful garden was very different and distinctive. It is amazing to

see how different spaces reflect personal styles and they were so

inspirational.

August 8th is the PGSG Al Fresco lunch to be held in Sheila True’s garden.

We meet there at 10.15am to deliver lunch food. Members will then share

cars to visit the Bog Garden just off the A143, returning for coffee and

lunch. Guests are welcome, dependent upon the number of members

attending, for a small payment of £2.50.

Tip of the Month

When weeding this month, watch out for useful self-sown seedlings

(foxgloves, forget-me-nots, verbena bonariensis, hellebores, marigolds)

and transplant them to a spare patch in the vegetable garden. They will

grow rapidly in such luxurious conditions and will be fine plants when

moved to their flowering positions in the autumn/winter.

Fete 2011,

he annual fete took place on the Community Centre fields on the 10th July. After detailed organisation throughout the year a dedicated group of

committee and helpers were at the Centre from 9.00am to set things up for a 1.00pm start. It is 25 years since the Centre was officially opened and Gislingham Silver Band seemed an appropriate main attraction, they played a range of music throughout the afternoon as people took part in a range of traditional games and tucked into an array of food options both hot and cold.

The unusually still conditions on the field made it difficult to raise some of the larger kites of the display team but they did their best and several children attended the kite-making workshop in the main hall. Despite varying weather forecasts, one including hailstorms, an enjoyable day was had by all with the heavy rain only arriving after the raffle and traditional tug of war.

The Fete is one of our largest fundraising events and it is rewarding to see both young and old enjoying themselves whilst we earn about 10% of our annual expenditure. Cakes arrived on the day from people we did not know; thank you your efforts were very much appreciated. All the prizes for the Tombola, Raffle and the games were generously donated by residents of the village. A big thank-you to you all, we even had a few left over which will be used for raffles at the Music on the Meadow event and possibly firework night. Now the planning will commence for the 2012 Fete, maybe we should have an Olympic theme!

Red Cross Collection in Palgrave

The door-to-door collection in May raised £116. Thank you to all the people who contributed so generously. The money collected in Palgrave and the surrounding villages will be used in this region. We are all aware of the role of the Red Cross in emergencies such as flooding or fires, but there are other less well-known services such as medical loan outlets (ours is at Botesdale) where people may borrow wheelchairs, walking aids, commodes etc. There is also a “Home from Hospital” service which enables people to leave hospital earlier and regain their independence more quickly. We could raise much more money if we had more people collecting – there were only two of us in Palgrave this year! Andrei, Maya, Iryna L & Iryna R -Welcome to Palgrave

e welcome two children and two interpreters from Belarus to Palgrave.

They are part of the Diss group of 13 children who are staying with host families for a month, organised by the Diss Group of the charity Friends

of Chernobyl Children. The children spend Monday to Friday from 10.00am to 4.00pm with the

interpreters and helpers at the Salvation Army Community Centre where various activities are arranged. In the first week of their visit they have been given

dental treatment by a local dentist, been swimming, enjoyed a day of art at

Thetford Grammar School and been ‘crabbing’ at Walberswick. There are many more things planned for the next 3 weeks. Just before they depart they put on a

show for their hosts and helpers in a local school. At the weekends the host families entertain their guests. My interpreter Irya was very excited on her

second day here when my daughter and son offered to take her to London on a Saturday- and she had a brilliant time although they were all rather weary when

they arrived back at Diss Station at 10.00pm…………………………

Friends of Chernobyl's Children is a registered charity which devotes its energies

to raising funds to bring children, who are at risk, from Belarus to the United Kingdom for a month every year. The charity targets children from orphanages

or disadvantaged homes, aged between six and thirteen. These children are in great need and come from social situations that make it difficult for them to get

the care they require at home. The following information is from the FOCC website

80 miles north of Kiev in the Northern Ukraine is a town that prior to 1986, no-one had heard of. Then on the 26 April 1986 the No 4 reactor at the Chernobyl

nuclear power station in the northern Ukraine, overheated, exploded, then went into melt-down. The world's worst nuclear accident released 190 tons of highly

radioactive waste material into the atmosphere exposing the people of Chernobyl to radioactivity 90 times greater than that from the explosion of the Hiroshima

atomic bomb. Few details were given initially as the Soviet government

attempted to cover up the incident, however following a great deal of international pressure the full horror of the incident was slowly released. A huge

area around the plant was devastated by the explosion and the ensuing radioactive contamination spread over the neighbouring countries. To this day

there is nothing growing where once agriculture was the main occupation of the common man. Further afield cattle still graze on contaminated land thus causing

the population to be continuously exposed to radiation via the food chain. As part of the former Soviet Union, Belarus lies in the shadow of Chernobyl, the

southern border being only 15 kilometres from the plant. The wind direction on the day of the disaster caused the majority of the fallout to be directed towards

the Belarusian towns of Gomel and Mogilev. Of the radiation that was released by Chernobyl, over 70% fell onto the population of Belarus resulting in 800,000

children in Belarus and 380,000 in the Ukraine being at a high risk of contracting cancer or leukemia. It will be another 24,000 years before the land is safe and

the children no longer suffer. At the meeting of the United Nations conference,

Belarussian scientists have declared this to be the greatest international ecological disaster in the history of humanity.

OPEN GARDENS

Thank you to all the people, especially the gardeners’ and scarecrow designers, who were involved with the Open Gardens event. Unfortunately it was the weekend also chosen by many other local villages for their Open Garden event and we did not attract as many visitors as we had hoped for. Fortunately the weather was kind to us and although Saturday was dull it did not rain. However we did manage to make just over £500 towards Community Centre funds.

Circus Stars Summer Reading Challenge at your local library

Roll up, Roll up…and join the circus fun at your local Norfolk County Council library this summer. The ‘Circus Stars reading challenge’ encourages children to read and collect

stickers – offering families a free activity to help make learning fun during the summer holidays.

The challenge is for children of all ages. They can read any books they like – fact books, stories, joke books, picture books – it’s up to them. Audio books count

too!

To sign up, simply pop into the library or onto the mobile library from Saturday 23 July and collect a Circus Stars 3D folder. Children complete the challenge

when they have collected six stickers (one for each book) and will be presented with a medal and a certificate at special events in early September.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

On Sunday 24th July between 12.30am and 12.45am on The Green,

Palgrave’ offenders attempted to drag a cement mixer from a back

garden. They were disturbed by the occupant of the property and were

heard running away from the area.

o you remember our Music on the Meadow event in August last year? It was another good event at your Community Centre with a full musical

programme organised by John Sparks. This year top of the bill will be the John Stannard Band playing music to suit all tastes – pop, R&R, jazz and blues – you can jive or sing along to them. Also on the programme are soloists singing, playing banjo and guitar; and also a taste of acapella with fiddle and mandolin. Refreshments will be available and the Bar will be open. It all starts off at 4.00 p.m. on Sunday 21st August. We cannot charge for entry but a collection will be taken – and we look forward to seeing YOU there on Palgrave’s playing field on a lovely summer evening – please bring your own garden chair or rug to sit on. Please remember it can be quite chilly and somewhat windy on our playing field so please dress to suit the weather conditions.

recent heavy rain has enabled the weeds to thrive, so it would be good to

Potatoes in Buckets –

PALGRAVE SUMMER FLOWER SHOW

If you need advice on growing bumper crops of potatoes in a bucket then Nick & Anita Hales are the people to ask. They were 1st and 2nd in our potato competition with crops of 2405 grms & 2014 grms. The smallest crop weighed a mere 195 grms. We had 42 entries of potatoes in the show, although over 70 buckets with potatoes were sold earlier in the year. Perhaps some people had a crop failure or forgot to bring the potatoes to the Show. Anyway it was quite a challenge emptying the buckets and weighing the contents as we had to do this inside the building due to the heavy rain. Our group, which now regularly attracts over 20 walkers, meets on the

second and fourth Tuesday of each month leaving Palgrave Community

Centre at 9.45 a.m. Everyone is welcome to join our friendly group but it

Redgrave village will be the starting point for a circular walk of around 5

miles to be led by Alan Gain, incorporating parts of the Redgrave and

Lopham Fen and the Angles Way. Most of the route will be on wide, well

used tracks through fields, fens and woodland with a few gentle inclines.

After the walk we will go to the local public house for drinks.

If you wish to join us on either of these walks please be at Palgrave

Community Centre car park ready to leave for the starting point at 9.45
