Don Kapperman is 71 years old (72 in May of this year) and a retired engineer with plenty of time to ride – and he does ride!

Don started riding when he was just 16. His first bike was an old Indian with no brakes so Don had to find something to run into in order to stop. Since then, he has owned several Honda road bikes but lately considers himself “strictly Harley.” In the past, Don owned a 2003 Sportster that was sold to a friend. He currently owns a 2003 Sportster and a 2005 Dyna Wide Glide, both with aftermarket wheels and all chromed out.

Don most recently attended Sturgis with his son who resides in Nebraska. Although he trailered the bike to Nebraska, he and his son, along with some friends, rode the 550 miles to attend the rally. In April, Don plans to ride 200+ miles with a friend to visit the Outer Banks. He also participates in most of the fundraisers for local charity RIDE TO THE TIDE which benefits Special Olympics in Delaware. Don will participate in RIDE TO THE TIDE’s big charity ride event on April 22, 2012.

Don also belongs to the local and national HOG groups. When he’s not riding, Don likes to spend time with friends and particularly en-joys the camaraderie of lo-

cal biker watering hole Cowboys Bar and Grill located in Greenwood, Delaware.

Fast Lane Biker Delmarva wishes Don a happy birth-day and many years of safe riding.

ASK THE ATTORNEYBY: LEE D. GABER, ESQUIRE

This month’s column takes on a somber note as I recently learned that a former client, Mr. Gerald Boyer of Allentown, PA died on March 4, 2012 when he was involved in a motorcycle accident.

Inasmuch as I have been representing bikers going on 22 years, I have had my share of clients pass away, however Gerri was a little bit different and held a soft spot in my heart because both he and his wife were good people in every sense of the word. Both Gerri and Carolyn were involved in a very litigious lawsuit, due to an unusual set of facts that led to their motorcycle accident in 2005. Without going into all of the details, they were both seriously injured, however the responsible insurance company didn’t see the facts the same way that we did and therefore litigation became necessary. There were many depositions taken of the parties and witnesses involved and ultimately as we were getting ready to go to trial, the parties all agreed to Binding Arbitration. The actual hearing, due to the number of participants, lasted approximately six hours and in the end, after a hard fought battle, we were not only successful, but received the amount we had been requesting the entire time. Although I would like to take the credit for the outcome, both Gerri and Carolyn were excellent witnesses.

Throughout the claim I got to know Gerri pretty well and went through many of the typical life experiences that one goes through during any

3-4 year time frame, some good, some bad, but through it all, Gerri kept a positive attitude and was always insistent that he did nothing wrong to cause or contribute to this accident in any way. At the end of the day Gerri, you were right, and we prevailed! As a result of Gerri and Carolyn’s kind referral, I now represent Gerri’s daughter and son-in-law in a motorcycle accident they were involved in which, although has a different set of facts, is also becoming quite contested due to the Defendant’s refusal to accept responsibility even though all or part of the accident was witnessed by several other parties.

My sincerest condolences go out to the entire Boyer family. Like I said earlier, the Gerri I knew was a stand up guy. He will be missed not only by his family, but by myself, his many friends and all of his “family” members at Lehigh Valley H.O.G. My heart goes out to his wife Carolyn, his daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Keith, and to the rest of the family whom I did not have the privilege of getting know during the time period when I represented the Boyer’s. Gerri ~ rest in peace my friend, and for your sake, may heaven be filled with never ending sunny days, long winding roads and your choice of new Harley’s to ride every day, from now to eternity.

The Freakin’ Freezin’ Frosty (3Fs) Run turned out to be not so freezin’ OR frosty this year. In fact, it turned out to be a beautiful spring day once the fog burned off. This jointly-hosted event courtesy of Delaware’s Byker Bizzare (Woodside), Chuck’s Classic Cycles (Harrington), and In The Sticks (Felton) produced an awesome turnout with over 100 bikes registered. Registration was $5 and worth every penny and then some.

Bikes rolled into Byker Bizzare around 9:30 a.m. where Don and Bonnie offered coffee and goodies. By the time everyone signed in and drew their first 2 cards, it was time to rock ‘n roll!

The second stop was Chuck’s Classic Cycles where Chuck and Kelly welcomed riders and provided them with their next 2 cards. There are always cool, vintage bikes at Chuck’s and, as you can see from the photos, many of the participants took advantage of the time to relax among old and new friends. The third and final stop was In The Sticks where the last card was drawn

and owner Jim Martin offered good eats and entertainment! Jim smoked a 220 lb. pig in addition to delicious smoked chicken. The food and friendly atmosphere at In The Sticks makes it a great place to meet up with friends anytime. Special recognition goes to Jim for “pulling his pork” together even when surprised by a number of riders who arrived early. The winner of the Poker Run was Gina Kratsas of Harrington, Delaware who rode away with an extra $525 in her pocket after drawing a full house (8s over 4s). Gift certificates were also awarded proving once again that it pays to ride. After a delicious meal, fellowship and good music by Slimm Pickins everyone headed out in their own direction. Congratulations to Byker Bizzare, Chuck’s Classic Cycles, In The Sticks and everyone who par-ticipated for making this a proper, biker-style season opener!

Welcome spring! I changed my plugs, oil, filter, cleaned my air filter, check the air pressure and even washed her (my bike that is). Now it’s up to Mother Nature to provide us with all those nice sunny days we look forward to.

After all my hard work, I decided to reward myself with a road trip and dinner. I headed out down the road and found myself in Northeast, Maryland at a nice little place on the water called the Nauti Goose. As the name sug-gests, the décor boasts a nautical theme complete with old fishing nets, buoys and other fishy items. I noted the long bar with plenty of high top tables, a huge buffet and attractive dining room. It was late so the deck wasn’t an option (it’s still a little chilly once the sun goes down!). I’ve already committed to making a return trip to personally view the scenery. I settled on a table in the dining room and was quickly greeted by my waitress. I was told that they recently reopened so there were a few things that weren’t 100% but everything I needed was ready – mainly food, beer and possibly some dessert.

The first to arrive was the crab dip and wings. I know you are all starting to worry about my waistline but there’s no need - I had a few friends with me. The crab dip was served in a huge dish with sliced bread. It was a blend of cream cheese, crab, and a few spices mixed together to a creamy delight. The wings were crispy and slightly spice-drenched in what they called “hell fire BBQ.” Needless to say, both appetizers didn’t last long and that was fine be-cause we ordered up another round of beers and a few honey bomb shots. No sooner were the shots ingested when our dinner arrived. We sampled the steak and cake, lobster mac and cheese and Cajun mahi-mahi. The steak and cake was a perfectly cooked rare filet and a broiled crab cake with a side of mashed potatoes and asparagus. I passed on the asparagus but helped myself to a little of everything else. The crab cake consisted of a ton of

NAUTI GOOSE . NORTHEAST MARYLANDBy Jay Kuch, Mystery Food Critique

crab with barely any filler. The steak was juicy and seared slightly on the outside to seal in the flavor. My mashed potatoes were fluffy and a great compliment to the rest of the meal.

I have to admit that the lobster mac and cheese left me hanging. I was expecting something a bit cheesier. The presentation was great but I would have liked to see more cheese to bind the ingredients together. It was, however, tasty despite my preference for more cheese. Finally, the mahi-mahi was baked just right with a great rub of Cajun spices and served with a side of chipotle tartar sauce (and the same sides we ordered with the steak and cake). Af-ter one more round of beer and a piece of chocolate lava cake, it was time to head out before I drank myself into a condition that would prohibit me from riding.

The Nauti Goose is a good place to stop if you’re ever cruising through Northeast, Maryland. Two out of the three dishes were spot on and even the one that fell short is worth another shot. After all, they were just getting started after being closed for the winter. The staff was extremely friendly, the food was good, and the booze was cold. Not too much more I can ask for in a bar/restaurant. You will need to open your wallet a little wider when eating at the Nauti Goose but, in my opinion, it is worth it.

Until next time, remember - it’s just another day in para-dise!

The Nauti Goose is located at 200 West Cherry St., Northeast, Maryland. If you have questions or comments, please email [email protected]. Oh yeah … I hope to see you in ocean city for OC Spring Bike Week™ at Trader Lee’s Bar. Just look for the drunk fat guy; I’m sure I’ll be easy to spot.

From one extreme to the other – I participated in the 2012 Special Olympics Delaware Polar Bear Plunge in February and froze my a** off with thousands of other polar bears, frolick-ing in the frigid Atlantic Ocean. The things you do for love! Don, who’s been raising money for Special Olympics DE for many years, con-vinced me to take the dive this year for a wor-thy cause. My first plunge was into 47 degree water, which basically feels like being stabbed with thousands of needles -- but I’m a tough biker chic, right? Right! You’re in and out of the ocean in about ten seconds so it’s not quite as bad as it might sound. All it takes is one big wave to soak you and then you’re out-a-there! Everyone’s in such great spirits -- the energy level is contagious. It was an awesome day and a terrific experience-one I never would have imagined myself doing had I not met Don. And I now have a giant stuffed polar bear as a reminder of my “heroism”, and the lengths my guy will go to put a smile on my face. If you can’t ride a motorcycle in the dead of winter, you might as well do something as equally stimulating! Doing it with a partner is definitely a plus – as with most things in life! I hope you consider becoming a Polar Bear and helping raise funds for the Special Olympics DE next year. I hope to see you in Rehoboth for the 2013 Plunge!

By the time you’re reading this, we’ll have packed our bathing suits yet again, but THIS time we’re heading for warmer climates -- Sun ’n Fun in Lakeland, FL, Daytona Beach to see my folks, and to Clearwater to visit friends. My dad just told me he found a windshield for LJ (my Intruder) and will have it ready when we visit them in Daytona Beach. I’ve had three mo-torcycles and none of them had a windshield. I think of the bugs, wind, rain, HAIL, and road

dirt as part of the biker experience, and I wear them all with pride. The thought of using a windshield seems almost sacrilegious. Jumping into the freezing ocean aside, I’m not a cold weather person. I don’t enjoy riding the bike when it’s extremely windy or when the temperature is below 50. Maybe having a windshield will change all that and keep me from getting beat up so much by the wind, AND extend the riding season for me. And speaking of riding season...it’s begun! Oh yeah baby, it’s ON!

For now, I’m looking forward to a few days in the Florida sun, looking at hundreds of air-planes, hanging out with my man…AND PLAY-ING ON DRY LAND! Enjoy the ride!

Heather

22-year-old Heather is a Carroll County, Maryland resident and a farm girl at heart. She teaches horseback riding and also trains horses in her spare time. She has been modeling part time for several years and says “it’s more for fun than anything.” Heather believes that if you put your mind to what you want to do, believe in what you are doing and have fun doing it, you have nothing to lose.

Heather was terrified by motorcycles until she met the Fast Lane Biker family. While at Outlaw Jam in 2011, FLBD encouraged Heather to put her fears aside and take that first ride – on a classic 1951 Harley provided by Chuck’s Classics! Heather is very ambitions and now tells us, “the more I am around Fast Lane Biker and motorcycles, the more I want to learn to ride!”

Once the agenda is finalized the next step is to find sponsors. Sponsors are often longtime supporters of motorcyclists’ rights who believe in what we work for and are happy to sponsor a bill on our behalf. Occa-sionally, ABATE will discover that a legislator has a mutual interest in a particular issue and, after discus-sion, they will sponsor the bill. Finding sponsors and working out the language for bills is just one more step that takes time.

We hope the information provided in this article is beneficial to motorcyclists who are not aware of the process and how much time and effort goes into getting a bill introduced into the General Assembly. Even after introduction of a bill there is more work to be done including lobbying and getting it passed into law. What is most impressive it that it is all done by volunteers who are working to help better your motorcycling experience.

This year ABATE of Maryland will be lobbying for five bills during the 2012 session of the Maryland General Assembly. Originally the intent was to have a lean and mean session with two bills on our plate. But when the final menu was delivered we were looking at a full course meal. For those who may not be familiar with the process of finalizing our legislative package, here is a rundown of the process.

In preparation for every Maryland General Assem-bly session, ABATE of Maryland discusses ideas for its legislative agenda at a regular state meeting well in advance of the session. During this meeting, we have what is known as the “mud on the wall” session - we throw ideas at the wall and see what sticks. Our directors take the ideas back to their respective chap-ters and discuss which ideas they think may have merit and which might not be viable for the General Assembly session. The state meeting that follows is when the “mud on the wall” ideas are filtered out and we arrive at a legislative agenda for the next session.

This, however, is not the end of the process. After an agenda is finalized at the state meeting, board mem-bers, usually the State Director, the Assistant State Director, and the State Legislative Representative, meet with members of the alphabet soup of state agencies. These include, but are not limited to, the MSP (Maryland State Police), MDOT (Maryland Department of Transportation), and the MVA (Motor Vehicle Administration). We meet with representa-tives from these agencies to discuss our agenda as well as their agendas. As can be expected, not all of the information we have is laid bare before these rep-resentatives and they are cautious about the informa-tion they divulge. These meetings are often the place where some compromises can be made and differenc-es ironed out so the process can run more smoothly once it gets to the legislature. There are still instances when agreements cannot be reached and the issues are fought out in the House and Senate Chambers.

Thursday afternoon took forever to arrive but the clock finally rolled to 3 p.m. I rushed out of the of-fice only to find myself stuck in traffic! My typical 15 minute ride turned into 30 minutes so I was throw-ing clothes and bike gear into the truck with a ven-geance. I made it out of Richmond, VA and onto Interstate 95 South around 4:30 p.m. and my GPS showed 8 hours before I hit Savannah, GA. I ar-rived at the hotel around 12:30 a.m. and passed out fairly easy with dreams of racing in my immedi-ate future.

Friday was a track day which is also good practice time for bike set-up and to study the race line for optimal riding lanes. All in all it wasn’t a bad day but the bike started to leak oil. Prieto Performance stepped in and worked on the bike while I headed back to eat and get some much needed rest.

Saturday’s team challenge event, which I rode with Calvin Martinez for 75 laps, brought home a top five finish in the GTU 600cc class. Ten minutes af-ter that event finished, I rushed to get my personal bike ready for my GTU solo race. I was gridded on the third and prepared for the start. The two board goes up, then one board, then BOOM! We took off and some guys were nose to tail while others ran side by side, racing for turn one. I dropped in behind the top four riders, side by side with Greg Melka, as we battled for fourth position around the track. I was running good corner speed and able to keep the fast riders in check most of the race but unable to hold off others with motor work. I went from fifth position each lap only to be beaten at the line for

YOUNG RACING 185

seventh position in the GTU. Piloting an all stock motorcycle is hard against the newer, faster equip-ment. But in the middle weight super sport race on Sunday, and the class I would be most competitive in, I was able to perform much better finishing fifth with wheel to wheel racing the entire time. Last was the middle weight superbike race which is much faster 600cc bikes than the middle weight supersport class and extremely hard to podium. This race was combined with a very large grid of amateur racers who would start after all the ex-perts made it through turn two safely. These races are known as “combined” and cause big problems for the faster-pace riders. I was currently running in sixth position and started to lap amateur racers within three laps of the start. This proved to be very dangerous as we raced and closed in on some rid-ers over 15 mph faster than they had been riding. This situation caused us to “pinch” amateur riders and for me to get squeezed off the track as well. I was able to save the crash but, as I slowed down, I ran my bike into the sand trap and lost the front.

It wasn’t a bad weekend with almost all my finishes in the top ten. It has proven very hard to compete without the funds some of these racers have (not to mention the motor work). But I’m learning quickly and will continue my persistent travel to the podium position.

worn out? Give your bike a good visual inspection from lever to caliper and then back again. Don’t forget to check the hydraulic system reservoirs. How does it look in there? Is it a nice clear yellow color or is it looking dark and nasty through that little peep hole? A good flush of brake fluid is a quick easy task that most any shade tree wrench can tackle with the right tools. The big box retail giant is typically not the place to take care of your motorcycle needs and wants. I have witnessed too many folks sit a season out because they tried to save a few bucks at the start. Take care of your bike, please, so it can take care of itself. Get yourself a good manual that is year and model specific to your ride and get to know that machine upon which you roll, my friend.

TIP: A great way for beginners to learn their bike is by cleaning it.

So the worst of winter would seem to be in the bar end mir-rors and now we want to ride. This phenomenon is evidenced by the many phone calls and all the two-wheeled family members that have been gracing our shop of late. Thank you, by the way, the business is much appreciated. But have you addressed your maintenance laundry list so your first ride of 2012 can be worry free? Read on for some tips, trips, and tune-up lists that will get you ready for blacktop quick. I’ve heard it all before. We stuck the bike in the garage not planning to get walloped head-on with a combined four feet of snow and we haven’t touched it since December, now what? Well, if you are like me, you drain the gas, charge the battery, check the tires and oil, and hit it with fresh fuel. But chances are you’re not like me. Just as the plumber always has a leaky faucet, the motorcycle shop owner is so busy working on your stuff that all five of his motorcycles are sitting, waiting, waiting, waiting and being as seriously neglected as aban-doned puppies. (Not that I would EVER abandon a puppy, mind you. Fear not! My mutt is lying next to me, fast asleep, belly full and spoiled like the princess she is.) Oh yeah, your bike. First off, let’s hope the thing even starts. Click, click, click or dead as dead? Look to the bat-tery. Did you get the el cheapo big box brand? Fine if you did, but go buy another. Don’t waste your time. If you got a season out of it you got your money’s worth. Now had you bought a real quality battery from a real quality power sports dealer you would have saved yourself a lot of time and money from the get go AND your bike would already be running AND you wouldn’t be sitting there reading about all this. Are you fuel-injected? Drain the gas, hit it with high test and hope it fires off feeling happy as a clam. Are you carbureted? Follow the above steps and if it pecks and coughs and sputters like it’s as mad as an old wet hen, give me a call. You don’t want to go there uninitiated. If that good-looking, modern-day, fuel-injected bike is acting mad as an old wet hen you may be breaking out the Visa, dig? Fuel systems aside, let’s head over to the owner’s manual. Tires and brakes – hmmmm. Do you NEED them? It’s not a “want” if you want to ride safe. Check the treads. See any dry rot? Don’t be the guy with a busted skull because he tried to save a few bucks waiting to replace the rubber. I can tell you some serious horror stories from guys who thought they could squeak by. Do not try it. And while you’re checking out the rear tire, take a look at the chain or belt. Both should have about one inch of vertical movement at about the swing arm pivot. Does it have a good coat of lube on there or does it feel dry? How about the sprocket teeth? Do they feel and look sharp or are they getting “rounded off” or “pointing.” If that’s the case, you will know what I mean. Get the bike lined up for some dental work. How about brakes? As much as I love to ride, sometimes you just have to stop for a red light. Although different brake compounds and brand names are recommended for different bikes and riders, make sure you have plenty of pad left. Sight down from the front of the rotor (that round skinny thing hanging on the side of the wheel) and see what’s happen-ing there. How about the mechanicals? Are your cables rusty or looking
