Love those April showers! Let’s not forget that April marks one year from 2012’s “History of Graffiti” at the State Theatre and the gala Grand Opening here at the 1222 J Street art consignment gallery. I really do not think any-one would forget that day. Since then there are now three aerosol art projects on buildings in our downtown region. Our hats are off to the Modesto Chamber of Commerce and Modesto View magazine for joining in. Ideas are really cool but ideas are really ideal when put into action. That is just what this partnership has done. Peer Recovery is proud to be a part of the mural craze that is now a reality in Modesto.

Watch for our International Arts Exhibitions as we drive through town in our 1974 International Grumman Step Van community service vehicle. The first exhibit is titled, “An Inside Job…Spray Can Artists of the Central Valley.” This show will be up and running this week. Watch for us! We are coming to visit your park, your school yard, yes, we are coming to you!

This past week your beloved Modesto Blues Festival rose from its resting place and now, Modesto music fans, get ready for a new era of dance parties like none other. Right on the 1200 block of J Street and no cost to attend. The line-up is the best we’ve ever assembled and the partner-ships with local business and media are the strongest ever. INVITATION TO 2013 ARTIST OPEN STUDIO

Hello,I hope you can join me at my garden studio, 1422 Fordham Ave., on April 6th and 7th between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. I will have original works for sale, as well as prints, cards, and copies of my books. I'm part of this year's Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour, a county-wide event featuring 57 artists at 35 studios across the county. One of my paintings, The Oak Path, will be a prize in a drawing to be held after the tour. It won 1st place in the landscape category at last year's CCAA Spring Show. Entry forms are available with your tour ticket purchase. Tickets are available online or at several galleries in Modesto, Turlock and Oakdale. I will also have tickets available at my studio. Malia suffered a massive brain hemorrhage and was in critical condition. Three weeks later she was transported to UCSF to undergo major brain surgery. The surgery was a success – Malia and her unborn child are doing great so far.

CENTRAL VALLEY BREWFEST

The date has been set for the inaugural Central Valley Brewfest scheduled to take place June 1st, 2013 at the Stanislaus County Fair Grounds. The 2013 event will be

an amazing experience in taste and art with the addition of hot music to compliment the cool brews. Get there early! Doors open promptly at 1:00 pm with the sampling ending at 5:00pm.

This art piece has been named “Dreamz.” It has been named “Dreamz” because it represents our dreams. Ev-erything in this painting represents something special. The white flower represents pure hope, the angel represents faith, the mountains represent determination, and the sky descending into the horizon represents “the sky is the limit, always and forever.” The trees represent the building of strength and courage, the shadowing around the frame rep-resents “keeping your eye on the prize,” and most of all, the painting itself is to encourage you to do whatever your heart desires. It has taken me two years to complete this piece of art, more or less, piece of myself. In two years, through my smiles, tears, troubles, and fears, I have learned a lot. Finally now I can share with you and everyone else, what I have learned.

SOTO HEADED FOR ART SCHOOL

Peer Recovery Art Project will miss Sergio helping youth during his drawing classes at the gallery. A heartfelt “Thank you” to Sergio for teaching our youth and involving them in mural painting!

All Age Drawing Instructions from Sergio Soto: Draw a lot. Practice makes perfect, so draw whenever possible. Draw ev-erything that inspires and even things that are boring. Be willing to start over and over again.

Get drawing books and drawing guides. Many of these are basic and cartoonlike, but they are a good place to start. They will teach the ability to look at all things as basic shapes.
