Time to Relax...9

Dear Friend,

I try to focus on the present. While I do set

goals and plan for the future, my plans are tenta-

tive so I can change and grow as needed. So four

years ago, when I (re)started Evolving, I wasn’t

thinking about celebrating future anniversaries.

But here we are, and it is a joyous occasion, in-

deed. Please join us on April 28 to celebrate our

4th anniversary. As in previous years, we’ll have

more than 70 Evolving advertisers available to introduce you first-hand to

the modalities, products and services you read about each month. See our

ad on page 7 for more information.

This month also brings our annual “Green” issue. With the grass in full

green glory, it’s the perfect time to celebrate Kansas City’s green and envi-

ronmental aspirations.

Because of the snowy March weather, the Communiversity Wholistic

Health Fair is rescheduled for April 14. Come take a workshop, see the var-

ious vendors and stop by and say hello. I’ll have on hand our April issue as

well as the annual Wellness Directory.

Here’s to living in the moment and celebrating the journey along the

way. Happy Spring!

Richard Bach Book Launch

In the tradition of John Steinbeck’s T r a v e l s w i t h Charley, and Richard Bach’s own bestseller, Illusions: The adventure of a reluctant messiah, Travels with Puff: A Gen-tle Game of Life and Death recounts Bach’s journey from Florida to Wash-ingtonstate in his small seaplane. With humor, wisdom and insight that could only come from one of the world’s favorite writers and an accomplished pilot, TRAVELS WITH PUFF, also challeng

es our ideas of fate and our futures, and asks us how can weprepare for the emergencies in our own lives? Can we ever really be safe? And, is being safe always what we want? “We are not victims of fate, we are the authors of our lives. Yes, life will be turbulent, at times. We will have our inflight emergencies. But we prepare for them, and we take action to turn bad feelings and bad situations into something positive. Turn everything positive. Learn from everything that happens. In this way, we are always pilots-in-command, no matter what happens.”

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 6 April 2013

A s a young girl, my farm chores were collecting eggs from the chicken house. First week on the job, I reach into the warm nest to fetch the egg and my

hand wrapped around a slimy black snake. Next day, those chickens were traumatized by my big wood stick and I prodded them from their nests, looking for any thievin’ snakes. As well, I hauled daily two gallons of milk from the bulk tank; and on Sundays, deep cleaned and sanitized the milk barn. This was done rain or shine, snow or sleet, Christmas and Easter. The dairy barn was a half mile from the house, so lots of work for a 12-year-old (no plastic then) carrying two jugs of milk in gallon glass bottles. The dairy was a “bungalow” and innovative. The cows were eye-level so no need to stoop to put on the milkers. However, when they kicked, their big hoofs flashed close to your head. That terrified me so I was banned from the bunker and given the clean-up duty. I hung from the sides of the bunker walls to clean the glass pipes used to flow milk into the huge bulk tank. All this work made my young frame long and strong. There was no word “organic,” but we lived it: We enjoyed vegetables from our acre garden, churned butter from fresh organic milk; beef from the green fields; eggs from the barn and water from the well. We wasted nothing. Garbage was fed to the pigs. We used glass bottles and jars for can-ning. Our lifestyle protected the Earth’s natu-ral resources and our personal resources. Dad, well educated, practiced right crop rotation and conservation of water by dig-ging ponds. In modern times, we are not expected to change everything and do a 180 to go green. Most of us have made changes. You readers know about recycling, using glass not plas-tic, etc. So what’s new in the Go-Green fo-cus? The new techniques for me I found:

•Buy a smart power strip (on Amazon) that

senses when appliances are off and cuts “phantom” or “vampire” energy use.

•Wash clothes in cold water whenever pos-

sible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heat-ing the water.

•Keep your cell phones, computers and

other electronics as long as possible, then donate or recycle them responsibly.

•Recycle, filter, use glass not plastic, etc,

etc., and you’re helping the environment while going “green.” I doubt anyone still churns butter from raw milk. Still, my mouth waters just thinking of that butter spread on warm, home-made bread. In yoga, the Earth, as I mentioned in last month’s column, is our body and bones and resonates the root chakra: safety, security, harmony and belonging. To go green inside ourselves, one consistent way is meditation and with a gentle self inventory, we are not polluting our minds and hearts with blame, fear, doubt, greed or jealousy. My mantra this month: I honor trust over doubt to expand ever more my love and well-being. This must be in place even while I take care of my adult daily “chores.” Now I don’t col-lect eggs or haul milk but I keep our home and my body impeccably clean and use organic products. Bravo to all of us for going more green in ‘13!

S pring planting time is here. This inspired me to think about a different kind of gardening called “Self-directed Neuroplasticity.” Rick Hanson, Ph.D., a psychologist and neuroscien-tist, author of Buddha’s Brain: Neuroscience

of Happiness, Love and Wisdom, gives us some practical lessons on how to accomplish the task of re-directing the brain’s negativity bias, planting positive seeds. He reminds us that negative experiences code immedi-ately while positive experiences take 10-20 seconds. Nega-tive experiences are in living color while positive ones fade into the background. Dr. Hanson describes this as the brain having velcro for the negative and teflon for positive. He tells us this is great for survival but lousy for our quali-ty of life. Dr. Hanson suggests that we follow three steps in our task of ‘gardening’ the positive in the brain.

• Observe what’s there; experience it; acknowledge

pain, problem

• Pull the weeds of negative thoughts, memories, etc.

• Plant the seeds and flowers of the positive thought,

feeling or action

This process, practiced repeatedly can re-train the brain, creating new neural pathways. If we can find that ‘sanctuary’ in the mind for 15 sec-onds and receive it, internalizing this into the neural struc-ture, we will begin to change the way we think about oth-ers and ourselves. I suggest the image of a tree to help calm the body and open the mind. Slowly taking a breath into the diaphragm, imagine you have roots reaching deep down into the earth. Your body is calm and quiet. The upper body is like the branches and leaves reaching to the sky. Your body is calm and relaxed; your mind is alert and awake Though criticizing, complaining, obsessing and other negative modes of thinking may be easier to cultivate, they

are destructive and have unhealthy consequences both emotionally and physically. We can shape our brains to be more resilient and positive by playing more upbeat songs rather than the more familiar bummer ones. Of course there is often great resistance to any change like this. We may have internalized messages like “I can-not be happy.” “I will never find love or if I do I will be hurt.” “I am not competent and won’t succeed.” The list can go on pretty endlessly…or so it seems to me when my brain gets rolling downhill in the negative groove. I suggest a simple intervention at this point. Say to yourself, “If I could imagine myself (say the positive thought like, ‘feeling confident, happy, loved’) I wonder what it would look like, feel like.” Imagine that and experi-ence it fully. This helps us to change the train track in our brain to the more positive thought or feeling in a powerful-ly gentle way. We are avoiding the power struggle that we usually have which almost always keeps us stuck in nega-tivity. Dr. Hanson suggests that each time we practice for 15 seconds, we are installing that brain pathway. Repeat it 5, 10, 15 times and you will activate it. Each time you do it that pathway will be reactivated. We are creating a new habit and a new neural pathway. With a small amount of consistent effort we can literally re-structure our brains. So let’s do as the song suggests by tuning our body and brain to the music of the land, inch by inch and row by row. Happy planting. EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 8 April 2013

T here is a famous Zen dialogue from ancient China about a monk and a teacher. The monk arrives at the monastery

and says to the teacher, “I’ve arrived. Please give me your teaching.” The teacher says, “Have you eaten your breakfast?” The monk responds, “Yes, I have.” The teacher says, “Wash your bowl.” The monk understood. What could be more obvious? If you were to ask, “How can I find work-life balance?” I might be inclined to ask if you have eaten your breakfast…And, assuming you have, suggest you wash your bowl. This dialogue and this terse instruc-tion are meant to shift your attention from looking for answers outside your-self to looking more directly within yourself beginning with your experience – directly and simply. Noticing, appre-ciating, and learning from the mundane activities of your everyday life. Even the act of “bowl washing” wash-ing dishes, can be turned into an incred-ible, even sensuous event; an act of dis-covery, a blossoming of the senses. What is the sensation of the water touching your hands; is the water hot or cold? Or washing dishes can be simply a chore to get done as quickly as possible to get to the next event, where the real action is – like sending emails or watch-ing television. The same activity can be completely different, depending on where you put your attention. Context matters. The story we tell ourselves is vitally important, not only to our state of mind, but also to our physical relationship and response to the events of our daily life. Attempting to achieve work-life bal-ance, as though something is missing or something is wrong, (either with you or with your situation) is a set-up for fail-ure, for stress, and for anything but bal-ance. Instead, experiment by bringing your attention to the activities that make up your work. Notice the activities and notice your inner dialogue, the stories you weave, as well as your feelings. Just this act of paying attention can produce positive change – a bit of slowing down, a little more space – opening up the possibility of change, of more calm, even of more appreciation.

So often, all the attention goes to the “what” – the content or story line – too much to do and not enough time. Try shifting the focus to the “how” – what is the quality of your activity, as well as the quality of your state of mind. All of these suggested activities are simple and complicated, easy and some-times impossibly difficult. Paradoxical? Yes! Much of being a human being re-quires that in order to get more done, try slowing down. To become more con-fident, try more questioning. To achieve more, explore beginning by accepting what is. To know yourself, try forgetting yourself. How – pay attention and ap-preciate what is right in front of you. Please, wash your bowl.

Revelations—by Sonia Choquette

Time to Relax

T his morning I overslept. I spent the weekend teaching a workshop and then caught a flight home that landed at

midnight. By the time I collected my luggage, got to my car and drove home it was 2:00 a.m. I didn’t mind. I still felt exhilarated from the workshop and the happy, joyful response, which emanated from the people who attended. Their love carried me home on such a vibra-tional high I didn’t feel tired at all. That is until the alarm clock went off at 7:00 a.m. this morning and a wave of exhaus-tion swept over me as I reached over and pushed the snooze button. I immediately fell back into a deep sleep for another ten minutes when the alarm went off again. Struggling to wake up I forced myself to open my eyes, stood up, and found my way to the shower. I realized as I pulled out of the heavy fog of such deep sleep that if I want to live in the highest vibration, I have to give my body more of a vote in how I pace myself — or I will not succeed.

My mind loves to create and loses all sense of time and space when I enter the creative vibration. My heart loves to con-nect and share and engage with others. And my body wants to share in the vi-bration of love as well by “suiting up and showing up.” But unlike my mind and heart, my body has a different set of re-quirements to keep up the vibration that the heart and mind want to maintain.

Embarrassingly, I often forget to take these requirements fully into account as I arrange my day. And when I ignore what my body needs, my loving vibration takes a nosedive. I become agitated. I feel cranky and irritable. I have more difficulty listening to my intuition or being present for others; and I overreact to noise and other dissonant energies around me.

I can’t tell you how many times my family members, who witness me in an over extended, exhausted and crabby state, have said, “I wish your clients and students could see you now…the way you really are!”

Every time this happens I cringe a little inside because they are right. Com-ing off the high of an intense effort of work, even work I absolutely love, does often catch me by surprise with a nega-tive mood and no love or patience for anything.

If we want to live in the vibration of love, it’s important to live in balance by

occasionally slowing down and pacing ourselves; so we avoid the emergency mode of breathlessness, irritability and exhaustion. I’ve read that the Dalai La-ma is very mindful of the importance of keeping a sensible pace so he can live in the spirit of love everyday. One time a reporter asked him how he remains so calm, so grounded, and so loving when his life can be so stressful and demand-ing.

He paused, gave the question some serious thought, and then answered, “I leave early for appointments.” How sane. How realistic. How intelligent. And how loving to himself and the people who look to him for leadership that he paces himself realistically.

It is when we allow our overly active minds to bury us alive by rushing through life with so many “to do” lists that we lose touch with the Spirit of love. Love has a slower, more grounded pace. It’s not urgent and frantic. It breathes.

In the spirit of that awareness I’ve

taken the day off to just relax. I slept in, and have nothing to do but enjoy life all day. It’s a challenge, but I am committed to rising to the occasion. This reminds me of something my teacher, Dr. Tully, once said to me. “Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is nothing. This doesn’t mean nothing is being done however. It simply means when you step back, the Universe can step in and do its part for you.” So, with a cup of coffee in one hand, a novel in the other, and noth-ing on my agenda all day, I send you all my love from my relaxed and peaceful heart.

L ast month, I wrote about how many health conscious people overlook a common processed food in their diet, protein powder. I suggested three whole food

sources of protein that share the convenience of protein powder. This month, I’ll share some delicious protein shake recipes using these sources, chia seed, hemp seed and spirulina. Chocolate Superfood Shake Chocolate turns spirulina into a taste treat even the most green-phobic will enjoy. 1 cup almond mylk or your favorite non-dairy mylk 1/2 medium cucumber, diced into large pieces 2 TBSP raw cacao nibs 1/2 avocado ½ cup frozen berries 1 - 2 TBSP spirulina 3 - 4 ice cubes, if a cold shake is desired Raw honey or stevia to taste, if desired Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Serves 1. Popeye’s Power Smoothie HealthSpan Health Coach, Christy Lonergan created this smoothie that would make Pop-eye leave canned spinach behind! I added chia seeds for a protein boost. 1 cup of almond mylk or your favorite non-dairy mylk 1 large handful of spinach (about 2 cups) 1 apple 3-4 strawberries 3-4 Ice cubes, if a cold shake is desired 2 tsp chia seeds Rinse spinach, and place all ingredients except chia seeds into blender until smooth. Pour into a glass, add chia seeds and stir. The chia seeds will congeal like tapioca. You may also blend the chia seeds into the smoothie with the other ingredients. Serves 1. The Superfood Bomb Breakfast Shake We enjoy this smoothie for breakfast at our house during warm weather when we want

something filling that won’t weigh us down. Remember to add spirulina to liquid for best results and to check the mirror before going out. 2 C water or chilled green tea 1/4 C chia seeds 1/4 C flax seeds 1/4 C hemp seeds 2 TBSP goji berries 10 golden berries, if desired 2 TBSP coconut oil or 1 avocado 12 brazil nuts 2 TBSP other nuts or seeds, if desired 2 - 5 TBSP spirulina 2/3 - 1 C frozen berries 6 - 8 Ice cubes, if a cold shake is desired Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Serves 2. Christy notes that because of their fiber content, smoothies last several hours before they start to lose nutrients. That makes them easy to make in the morning and enjoy at work for lunch. Now that’s quality fast food!

A high speed blender such as a Vitamix or Blendtec works best with these recipes.

Not all spirulina is created equal. Health-force, Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica and Nuts.com all sell fresh, tasty spirulina.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 13 April 2013

Feature—by Mandi Newton

Going Green in a Modern Mind

A lthough we are born through the

nourishment grown around us,

why is it so difficult to find that

same sustaining nourishment?

We trust that people with

money and power have all the answers; and also

trust that by getting to those positions, they have

the best of intentions for the mass populations

they serve. It seems, however, that most serve

only for greed and the need for profit. We are all

on our own attempting to educate ourselves and

to make the best decisions possible.

Meanwhile, we are getting sick. We feel bad

and don’t know why…we escape from our reality

by listening to what we are told is right, instead of

going back to our roots to do what we feel is

right. Much of the time, we are overwhelmed by

the difficult options given to us.

Where is our food coming from? And, the

packaging? It is getting harder and harder to know

what is pure and true to nourish and protect our

bodies and the bodies of our children. What is

truly right for a stronger vitality?

Pollution is tormenting our bodies and hearts

with a lack of spirit and nutrition while it is sup-

posed to connect to our bodies like a thousand

piece puzzle. The nourishment is lacking and does

not fit if a piece of the puzzle has been cut or al-

tered in an incorrect way.

From GMOs that are clearly ruining our soil

and our food supply, for now and for future gen-

erations, to nuclear meltdowns that pollute our

sea life and waters for our children…the foods

that were once our basic staples are no longer safe

for us. We must also be aware of the dangers of

toxic beauty and cleaning products that fill our

bloodstreams with the possibilities of illness.

Then what is safe?

As a single Mother who contends with neuro-

logical conditions everyday in order to find the

right foods to eat and to nourish my growing son,

I must consider our tight budget. As I said before,

the choices now are even harder since we have

GMOs to worry about.

As an herbalist, it is even harder to make sure

herbs are grown properly so they work as they

should.

With large vitamin companies now pulling one

main property out of a plant and charging a small

fortune to someone on limited funds already,

doesn’t it make us think about growing our

own…? Anything at this point! Modern medicine

for acute purposes is a miracle all on its own; but,

haven't those been derived from whole herbs and

foods that have always existed?

We are working our lives away to buy non-

nourishing food that we are dying from…when

we actually were created from a heritage of

growing, hunting and gathering for ourselves.

I will let you be the one to judge how our

work ethics and priorities have changed. We as

people, have to fit into a society where others

make decisions for us due to the specialties of our

careers. We recommend people to tell us more

about ourselves than we care to know, mean-

while, paying our hard earned money to those

same individuals who suppose they can direct our

lives better than we can.

In order to survive, we all have the same

needs for nourishing food, clean air, clean water

and healthy products. We need to stand tall as a

united people and make difficult choices. We

need to be about the business of growing our

own food, we can learn to avoid canned foods,

eat raw, buy local when possible or buy frozen…

recognizing that these choices can be the first steps

to the most cost effective ways for taking care of

our future health. Standing up for our rights and

what we believe in is not un-mentionable any-

more as our intuition has not been lost. We must

stand up for the rights of our health and for our

children, and educate ourselves on what feels

healthy for our bodies. Going green to be free, is

an understatement.

We must be about the work of saving farms

such as Sanctuary of Mana Ke’a Gardens, in Keala-

kekua, HI by Randyl Rupar, which teaches us of

the organic presence of the earth and connection

to ourselves. We must support our local health

food stores, such as Island Naturals, in Kailua Ko-

na, Hawaii, who supports organic quality for fam-

ilies in need, and also Terrell Martinez’s “Now’s

The Time Project” which stands for a better world

for our children. Together, we can surpass the

hardships of finding good-for-us foods to nourish

our mind, body, and souls.

Here’s to good eatin’s!

Mandi Newton is an herbal-

ist, alchemist, herbal cosmet-

ic formulator, and holistic

nail technician. She is also a

hard working single Mother

and cares about the planet

her child will grow up in…

She believes to sustain a life on this Earth, it will

be a constant upkeep by everyone on this planet.

She believes in a better people management and

wants everyone to do whatever they can to main-

tain their surrounding areas for the futures to

come. Many Blessings.

Urbavore

URBAVORE: any animal that consumes urban grown foods; an organism that feeds from the energy, surplus and/or waste of a city.

M aybe you already know them as the Badseeds of

Badseed Farmers Market.

But whether you do or not, Brook Salvaggio and

Dan Heryer have redefined themselves in the

last couple of years from farmers of a small 2.5

acre property in South Kansas City to owners and pioneers of one of the largest (13.5 acres),

most diverse, “beyond organic” urban farms in

the country. Located in the middle of the city at 5500 Bennington, they call it Urbavore.

Neither Brooke nor Dan, both from Kansas

City, grew up on farms. But now 31 and having farmed since they were 24, they represent a rare

farmer profile and bring a passion, idealism and

energy to their farm and farming practices that match or surpass any born to the occupation.

In 2007, after much wandering and soul-

searching, Brooke says she decided to farm be-cause she found it, literally and figuratively,

grounded her. Thus she started the small Bad

Seed Farm where her husband, Dan, later joined

her. The farm was successful until four years into the endeavor the city stepped in and shut down

the operation citing zoning ordinances that pro-

hibited agricultural activities on the property. When their dream seemed all but lost, they

came upon the land that is now Urbavore. For

years the city had grappled with purposing the 13-plus acres along Bennington. There were

plans for a school, then a college, then a low-

income housing project. Meanwhile, Brooke says, the city was paying $20,000.00 a year to

keep the property mowed. Nevertheless, wrest-ing the land from the city was an emotional,

frustrating battle filled with court hearings and

delays. But finally, in 2010, Brooke and Dan took ownership and Urbavore was born.

On a mild Sunday morning in February I visit-

ed the farm, catching the owners before their

hectic planting season starts in March. Meeting me at the property’s gate, Brooke and I walked

the rolling property, which is presently mostly

brown and barren given the season and the early stages of the farm’s development. Without

loans, subsidies or utilities — this land is off-the-

grid — Dan and Brooke are first focusing on their crops, with buildings to follow as profits dictate.

However, the beginnings of their future under-

ground, solar-powered home were evident as we climbed the big pile of excavated dirt making

way for the structure. Dan was working on the

project, as his wife and he are the sole contrac-tors of the house. Brooke says a greenhouse will

follow — one is being currently rented at another

location — and then a barn. But all around the

land is plotted for a vast array of produce, in-cluding some heirloom varieties: strawberries,

rhubarb, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes and many

others. Apple, peach and pear trees have taken root, with plans to greatly expand the orchard in

coming years, and a vineyard is staked out for

2014. The farming methods governing this agricul-

tural effort go beyond the practices of a typical

organic farm which often tills, irrigates and, at times, even uses synthetic substances, though

with well-defined restrictions, to prevent weeds,

pests and disease. In contrast, Brook and Dan do

not till the soil, irrigate or spray their crops. They rely as much as possible on natural processes

and substances to keep the earth nutrient-rich

and moist and plants thriving. Heavy mulching is

used to kill sod, prevent weeds and activate soil

life. Free range chickens, ducks and geese, be-sides producing eggs, eat weeds and pests and

fertilize the soil. Cows and goats are periodically

brought onto the property from other land-limited farms. A compost heap, located on a

back lot, is a ready source of natural fertilizer

originating from the surrounding community’s

food scraps, leaves and grass clippings. Ur-bavore operates Kansas City’s only residential

composting program. Instead of irrigating, again

heavy mulching plays a role in retaining the soil’s moisture, as does the refrain from tilling. Soil

left undisturbed preserves its natural structure

Brook and Dan do not till the soil, irrigate or spray their crops. They rely as much as possible on natural processes and

substances to keep the earth nutrient-rich and moist and plants thriving.

Page 15: April 2013 Evolving

that binds and holds adequate

moisture just below the surface. Even during the drought last sum-

mer, Brooke reports, their produce

fared better than produce that was irrigated. And the fruit trees are full

-sized with deep root systems, ra-

ther than dwarf trees, chosen be-cause of their greater capacity to

withstand drought conditions.

After touring the property, Brooke and I took a seat in some

patio chairs near the farm’s bound-

ary along Bennington. Embracing

their ambitious agenda of diversity and purity of organic farming meth-

ods, I remarked that a lot of re-

search must be required. Brooke said they do research types of

plants and organic farming practic-

es, but have found that the longer they farm the more intuitive it be-

comes. However, she said, planting

and tending the crops takes an enormous amount of intensive

physical labor. Each year they bring

on several apprentices and volun-

teers to assist them, offering free room and board and their

knowledge in exchange for the la-

bor. Brooke admitted that the work and commitment required to make

Urbavore an ongoing, productive

enterprise have been greater than she ever imagined. But, they be-

lieve deeply in organic farming as a

way to save the planet and its in-habitants, and in urban farming as

one response to vacated urban

property that can revitalize neigh-borhoods and provide “real” food in

areas where it’s needed most.

In their mission to make Ur-

bavore a model for future farms, Brooke and Dan are spreading the

word. Every Friday you can find

them, along with their 18-month-old son, Percy, at the Badseed

Farmers Market at 1909 McGee

from 4-8 pm., May through Febru-ary, and on Saturdays at the River

Market during its months of opera-

tion, showcasing their sumptuous fruits and vegetables. Brooke is es-

pecially interested in educating the

wider population who is uncon-

vinced of the value of organic farm-ing and even more skeptical of the

higher prices the products can

fetch. As the interview wrapped up I

was left truly inspired by these

young crusaders who walk the talk for sustainable, organic, urban

farming. As another way of getting

out the word, Urbavore will be part of the Urban Farm and Garden Tour

slated for the weekend of June 22-

23, 2013.

They believe deeply in organic farming as a way to save

the planet and its inhabitants, and in urban farming as one

neighborhoods and provide “real” food in areas where

it’s needed most.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 16 April 2013

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) So many planets are in Aries, and they are rustling up stuff in your subconscious. Meditate about hidden or suppressed anger. Acknowledging disap-pointments supplies energy

that’s previously been spent pushing old stuff down. For-giveness gives freedom and opens your heart to love, mak-ing new relationships come in, and current ones flow better. Also meditate on financial is-

sues, since amazing solutions can pop into your mind!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Spice up relationships by trying new activities or spending time together with interesting friends. If single you can meet someone new in the same ways. In meditation, focus on the areas of your life where you are jealous. It could be about other people’s better finances, rela-tionships, looks, or their self confidence. Release your re-sentments or frustrations, so the same level of good can flow into your life!

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) You can get a new job this month! Or at least you’ll be making more money somehow – whether it be a raise, bonus or promotion. You could also meet a romantic partner at work if single – or maybe have a new work partner who makes life easy for you. The key this month is to balance work with relationships. It might be easy to become workaholic-like. Don’t forget other people in your life who also need you!

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) You’ll be open to new spiritual paths, or have a revitalized in-terest in meditation. Follow your enthusiasm and make good progress this month. The trick is not to drop your disci-plines when the novelty wears off. You’ll have important in-sights if you persist when stuff seems ho-hum or boring. Make a commitment now not to be a spiritual dilettante. Stay true to your path to grow and evolve! Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) If your relationship or sex life has been boring, this month it will explode with passion! If single, you’ll attract someone who sees that divine fire within you. Meditate and focus on your own beauty, lusciousness and spiritual depth. You have so much to offer as a lover and as a spiritual partner. Don’t settle for anything less, and

don’t think anything less of yourself!

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Meditate about releasing dys-functional patterns you ob-served in and absorbed from your family! You can free your-self from subconscious relation-ship sabotage. If single, you can begin a healthy partnership. If already coupled, you’ll improve your way of relating and be able to truly enjoy emotional intima-cy. Also look at your eating hab-its and how foods alter your mood – and how those bad moods affect others as well as yourself!

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Your thoughts affect your health – physical and mental! Meditate and observe your mind – also observe your thoughts throughout the day. See how negative and mean you can be to yourself. Make a spir-itual commitment to stop! This is like an addiction – ask for help like an alcoholic in AA asks for help from a Higher Power. You can be free and happy! Don’t trust any idea in your head that is negative – it’s just your lower self trying to keep you down – it’s not some form of urging for self-improvement!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) This can be an amazing rela-tionship month! So many plan-ets are coming together and making you extra magnetic and appealing. However, your spir-itual challenge is to observe how you could be subcon-sciously blocking that flow of energy. Let your power shine and make no excuses about your magnificence! You are not conceited – you are acknowl-edging how powerful the Uni-verse is at it flows though you!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) It’s time to acknowledge how spiritually influential you are! Your meditation and self-improvement disciplines make you comforting and magnetic. People gain strength and hope

from being around you – even if you are quiet and just being around them. It’s good to be humble, but please see you have a special gift that you’ve worked hard to cultivate! Keep up the great work and praise yourself!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Make an effort to observe your thoughts. You’re blessed with a powerful and curious mind, but can get carried away with over-analysis, worry or over-complicating things. The key is to blend your day-to-day intel-lect with your higher brain/intuition. Your intuition has simple answers to complex problems and can also soothe your mental tensions. Relax into the fact that you don’t have to struggle for all the answers! (Also contemplate that you could be “addicted” to your constant thinking!)

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) You could have exciting finan-cial breakthroughs or new work opportunities. There will proba-bly be a tie-in with something charitable or meaningful to society. In general, contemplate how you use your time and money. Could you be doing something that is service ori-ented and making a contribu-tion in some way? This is a sure-fire way to lift your Piscean spirits and to help you feel valu-able and connected.

April 2013

Aries (March 21 – April 19) Happy birthday Aries! All month Mars, your ruling planet, supplies you with tons of energy and ideas. But watch out for being over-enthusiastic, or even irritable if others don’t want to bound ahead as excitedly as you do. By May most peo-ple will be caught up to your advanced concepts, so don’t get frustrated. Meanwhile, meditate on new goals and put personal plans into practice, so you move to-ward results. Just be patient with slow pokes!
