This school year Winn piloted a program called Math Expressions and we are delighted that all K-5 classrooms will be using the program next year. The middle school will be using an updated version of CMP (Connected Mathematics Pro- ject); one of the concerns with the previous version was a lack of support for parents to help their children. The new version comes with an updated website to provide parent and student support. Over the past few years all Shepherd High School and Odyssey mathematics teachers have partici- pated in EMATHS trainings (Embracing Mathematics, Assessment, & Technology in High Schools) . They will continue to implement additional EMATHS activities. More students will be encouraged to dual enroll and earn college credit for advanced mathematics classes taken during high school. Substantial work has been done to align our curriculum with the new Common Core State Standards and provide more vertical alignment K-12. Winn Elementary

The students and staff would like to thank the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe for the many wonderful new books we were able to purchase with grant money we received from

them. We were able to purchase over $8,000 worth of new books spanning all levels of Kindergarten through 5th grade. Most of the materials purchased were non-fiction to up-date our collection and meet the new informational reading standards found in the Com-

mon Core State Standards. It's been terrific to see the excitement the students have shown when checking out these new treasures!

Jim Basketball Jones Visits Winn Elementary

BOUNCE INTO A GOOD BOOK “It’s the small things we do daily that make a BIG difference in our lives, READ every day!”

During his second visit to Winn this school year, Jim Basketball Jones focused on the importance of being able to read proficiently and how daily reading can become a healthy habit that pays big life dividends. He brings his personal struggles with dyslexia into his presentation and discusses how he refused to allow his condition to negatively impact his love for reading and learning. His character education program is loved by our students and staff. Thanks Jim Basketball Jones!

We have enjoyed working together as a team over the last 6 weeks and are motivated to eat healthier and exercise more. Our last WinnFit event was an evening of fun with students and families at Morey Courts. Congratulations to Mrs. Walters’ second graders for being the WinnFit “Winn”ers and Mr. Watters’ 4th graders for coming in second place. A huge thank you goes to our Parents’ Club for sponsoring this yearly event and a special thank you to Jennifer Badgero for organizing and counting our weekly bingo sheets. Ziibiwing Center visited by Eighth Grade

On March 21 and 22, Shepherd Middle School Eighth graders visited the Ziibiwing Center thanks to a grant from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. The advisories of Barrand, Ericksen, and Haag toured the center on Thursday and the advisories of Klak, Nestle, Prout, and Sickles toured the center on Friday.

The students learned to make dream catchers, examined cultural artifacts, were astounded by the interactive museum, and learned some native words by playing BINGO.

It was a worthwhile visit.

7th Grade Art Class creates colorful masks! Students in Mrs. Bleecker’s seventh grade art class looked at different masks around the world and sketched out ideas. Working with the elements of design to build a paper mache three dimensional model was fun. Adding jewels, glitter and feathers also helped to make the “magic” happen!

Odyssey Softball

The Odyssey Trailblazers are gearing up to kick off another softball season…right after we return from Spring Break and get out of this snow! The Trailblazers have much of its squad returning from last year, a good sign for a team that won 1st place in Grand Rapids at the Spring Swing In-vitational Tournament, and then came up just short in the state finals. Odyssey lost in the champi-onship game to Grand Rapids Crossroads, finishing the season with a 13-2 record. With a veteran team infused with some new talent, the group looks to improve on last year’s record by at least one game. As a side note, last season marked a milestone for the Odyssey softball as we earned our 100th victory all time, ending the season with a win total of 104 victories since 2001.

Students from Shepherd High School recently returned from Lansing and the annual Youth In Government Spring Conference. The Youth In Government program provides over 1600 high school students with a unique opportunity to become acting state legislators, lobbyists, lawyers, committee chairs, etc. In essence, the stu-dents simulate all phases and positions of the actual state government. These students are challenged with many of the issues our real legislators must face in their elected offices. Youth from throughout the state are selected as delegates from schools or YMCAs and spend months researching for the event. Students take posi-tions in the House and Senate as well as the executive branch. They work in chambers to introduce, debate and vote on proposed legislative bills that have been written by the youth legislators in their hometowns. While in Lansing for the event, the Shepherd Delegation was invited to spend some time with Representative Kevin Cotter, who is a Shepherd High School alum. The students were able to meet Representative Cotter in his office for pizza and conversation. The students were able to see Rep. Cotter's office and where he works when he is not in meetings or when the legislature is not in session. He took questions from students and lis-tened to their concerns.

(Students: Jacob Rogers, James Newman, Stephanie Pardy, Taylor Fussman, Hannah Yates, and Kennedy Winnie)

One of the highlights of being a part of Youth In Government is that the delegates actually get to go on the chamber floor, sit at the desks, use the podiums and microphones, and become legislators. Only the legisla-tors and a few select groups get the privilege of going on the chamber floor. All guests have to view the pro-ceedings from the gallery.

Local Students Compete in Business Professionals of America

State Leadership Conference

Business Professionals of America is a dynamic youth organization which provides leadership and business opportunities for high school students to prepare them in their future careers.

Students participated in the State Leadership Conference on March 21-24, 2013 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan. More than 4,500 students representing approximately 170 schools partici-pated in the conference. They competed in various events ranging from accounting to graphic design to pub-lic speaking. Students also participated in an opening ceremony, workshops, a formal dinner, dance and an award session. Students who placed high enough are eligible to attend the BPA National Leadership Confer-ence taking place May 7-12, 2013 at the Walt Disney World Swan Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Business Professionals of America helps young people prepare themselves for business professional careers. They learn a variety of skills such as teamwork, time management, and public speaking. These skills are very beneficial as these bright, young people enter the workforce and help shape the future. BPA is an inter-curricular activity in the Business Technology Department at Shepherd High School.

Students who placed at State are Rachel Travis, 3rd in Basic Office Systems & Procedures and Taylor Priest, 4th in Fundamental Word Processing. Sarah Bellinger and Rachel Travis received their Statesman Torch Award.

The advisors are Lisa Antcliff and Jeanine Bellinger.
