Michael Abrams, Class of 1966, in recognition of his scientific advances in the field of geology, developing satellite instruments used by NASA for land surface re-mote sensing from outer space for the study of volcanoes, the ocean crust, and petroleum and mineral exploration.

Jonathan Goldstein, Class of 1986, in recognition of his talents as a Hollywood comedy writer, a Harvard-educated lawyer who pursued his dream to write scripts for popular television comedies and major motion pictures grossing hundreds of millions of dollars at box offices worldwide; and for his mentorship of the next generation of aspiring writers.

Donna Bickoff Cohen, Class of 1966, in recognition of her lead-ership in founding, guiding, and supporting the Beachwood High School Alumni Association, and in memory of her unifying spirit and tireless efforts on behalf of those who shared her love for all things Beachwood.

Daniel L. Kalk, Class of 1976, in recognition of his bravery, profes-sionalism and leadership as a lawyer and peace officer specializing in crisis intervention and critical inci-dent response, and his selfless ad-vancement of the law enforcement community as a volunteer educator, trainer and journal author.

Judi Magid Feniger, Class of 1969, in recognition of her profes-sional and personal contributions to civic organizations, including the American Red Cross and the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in its formative years, and her countless volunteer leadership roles in North-east Ohio.

Brian Kwait, Class of 1979, in recognition of his personal gener-osity in mentoring future business leaders and in supporting children’s, medical and Jewish philanthropic causes, while transforming and building businesses through Odyssey Investment Partners, LLC, a private equity firm he founded and grew to more than $5 billion in investments.

Mia Buchwald Gelles, Class of 1984, in recognition of her environ-mental health research and tireless advocacy, including for those im-pacted by autism, and for improving the quality of life for thousands of in-dividuals by founding the Milestones organization to support, educate and connect affected families.

Jennifer A. Litvak, Class of 2004, in recognition of her tireless dedi-cation to protecting women’s and children’s rights; her research and advocacy on human rights issues; and her commitment to enhancing access to educational opportunities for women and other vulnerable populations worldwide.

Beachwood Schools proudly recognizes the following alumni to be inducted into the 10th class of the Beachwood High School Gallery of Success. This induction brings to 121 the number of alumni who

have been inducted into the Beachwood High School Gallery of Success since its inception in 1985.

Nominees must be Beachwood High School graduates whose achievements since high school make them outstanding role models for our students. They must exhibit achievements and distinction in one or more of the following criteria: leadership, service, humanitarianism, cre-ativity, courage, and/or career contributions that have benefited others. The inductees were selected by a committee representing a cross-sec-tion of the Beachwood community.

Alumni have been invited back to BHS for a weekend honoring their success and to share their achievements with the student body, staff, and community. The weekend will include an induction assembly, VIP luncheon, and student meet-and-greet on Friday, April 11, 2014. The honorees will also be guests at an evening gala sponsored by Beach-wood Schools Foundation on Saturday, April 12, 2014.

Marketing Class Seeks Innovators

The largest business fair in Northeast Ohio that connects entrepreneurs and businessesThe Beachwood High School Junior Achievement marketing class seeks businesses and organizations that are engaged in creativity and innovation to exhibit at Entrovation 2014, an exposition of “Innovative Entrepreneurs,” on Friday, May 2, 2014. The event is 12-6 pm at the Beachwood Community Center, 25325 Fairmount Blvd.

Entrovation 2014 will attract more than 150 businesses and 5,000 attendees for a one-day event that showcases out-of-the-box ideas, products and services by connecting today’s most innovative entrepreneurs, organizations and businesses with thousands of engaged consumers.

Vendors are sought in the following industries: Arts, Food, Building, Health and Fitness, Communications, Living, Customer Experience, Software, Design, Sustainability, Education, Technology, Entertainment, and Transportation.

This event provides extensive exposure for both established and start-up businesses to get in front of thousands of potential customers, clients and contacts. Entrovation 2014 is an efficient and productive method for businesses to connect with the

community and create buzz, interest and sales. Exhibitor booths have sold out for the last six years and space is limited.

Using Smart Technology, attendees will be able to interact and vote for their favorite company in the Innovative Entrepreneur of the Year Competition. Businesses will be encouraged to create exciting displays that showcase their innovative products and services and promote them through social media and other marketing tools prior to the event. The Beachwood Board of Education has contracted with Triad Research Group to conduct surveys of community members later this month. About 350 residents representing a cross-section of the community will be contacted by telephone in advance of forthcoming Board discussions about much-needed facilities upgrades for Beachwood’s elementary schools and athletics fields and facilities.

A recent facilities study confirmed that Hilltop and Bryden elementary schools, both more than 50 years old, will need major repairs and upgrades in the next one to three years. Consequently, status quo is not an option. The Board will soon discuss whether to perform major renovations at Hilltop and Bryden similar to those recently completed at the high school, or to build a major addition onto the Fairmount Early Childhood Center to consolidate our elementary schools into one PreK-5 building on the Fairmount site. Either solution requires a sizable investment, but will result in a building(s) that matches the quality of our high school and middle school. Whether new or renovated, our improved elementary facilities will match the excellence of their educational programs and meet the future needs of our students.

Similarly, while our athletics fields are safe and have continually been maintained, we must determine the scope of improvements and enhancements necessary to ensure that they are indicative of the quality of our programs. Similarly, the high school pool has areas in need of significant upgrades.

The surveys will ask residents questions relating to the following:

• General perceptions of how Beachwood City Schools are performing

• How residents receive and prefer to receive information about the schools

• Preferences about renovating Bryden and Hilltop elementary schools versus consolidating the elementary facilities into a single building on the Fairmount site

• Attitudes about the need to upgrade Beachwood’s athletics fields and facilities

The Board of Education will use data collected from this survey when considering how it will proceed with the needed renovations to Beachwood’s school facilities. Discussions and presentations on this subject will take place at future Board of Education meetings. We encourage you to attend.

Community Survey Planned for this Month

Separate teams of Beachwood fifth graders and sixth graders each placed first and second at the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics math contest at John Carroll University on Saturday, Feb. 22. Beachwood fielded seven total teams comprising 28 fifth and sixth graders.

For two hours, students competed in four rounds requiring problem solving, mental math, construction and application of concepts. Students work both individually and together in different rounds. Out of 11 fifth grade teams and 10 sixth grade teams, 20 percent of the teams earn trophies, 40 percent earn Championship Awards (blue ribbons) and 40 percent earn Special Awards (red ribbons). Beachwood math teachers Carole Katz, Shelly Lewis, and Laura Gibson coached and practiced with the students for several weeks.

The purpose of this tournament is to promote enthusiasm for mathematics among students in the fifth and sixth grades; recognize students for their interest, perseverance, and talent in mathematics and problem solving; challenge these students in an energizing and competitive setting; and celebrate community-wide the achievements of these young mathematicians.

Gross & Harris Each Win 2nd State Wrestling Titles

Beachwood High School seniors Sammy Gross and Ryan Harris each won their second state wrestling titles at the Ohio High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships on March 1.

Harris won his second straight state title with a 9-4 decision over West Salem Northwestern’s Joey Meek. He won the state title in 2013 after an undefeated 50-0 season, and placed seventh in 2011 and third in 2012. He finished high school as Beachwood’s all-time winningest wrestler, with a career record of 188-14, with 95 pins. Harris will continue his wrestling career at The Ohio State University.

Gross won the 132-pound title with a 5-1 decision over Dayton Chaminade-Julienne’s Lyle Plummer. He also won the state title in 2012, and placed third in 2011 and 2013. He finished high school with a career record of 174-15, including 88 pins. His wins total ranks second in school history. Gross will continue his wrestling career at Northwestern University.

Gross and Harris are the first Bison duo to win state titles in the same year since 2002, and the first Bison ever to win their second titles in the same season. Anthony Walden also qualified for states for Beachwood. Led by head coach Dugan Bentley, the Bison as a team tied for sixth overall in Division III.
