Best Kept Secret: Arizona Horse Rides

If you are looking for something fun and different to do, especially when grandkids or friends visit, consider going for a horse ride in nearby Scenic, AZ. Located about nine miles from Mesquite, Arizona Horse Rides is owned and operated by Tim Orrell, a man who has owned and ridden horses for most of his life. Tim has lived in Scenic for the past 11 years after his retirement from the California Department of Corrections. Of his four horses, “Cloud” is the oldest at 31, and the other three are “youngsters” in their twenties. Added to the group is “Grady,” a friendly 20-year-old donkey who likes children to pet him. Not long after moving to Scenic, Tim went through a stringent ten-month program to be approved by Mohave County to offer his riding program. Emphasizing safety, comfort and making it fun for kids, Tim walks with the horses, leading them to the beginning of the riding trail and doing his utmost to make the riding experience enjoyable. Training a horse for trail rides takes several years as horses need to become accustomed to different sizes and experience levels of kids and adults. To arrange for a trail ride, contact Tim at 928-347-1248. If Tim can’t get to the phone, leave a message as he may be out with his horses. After your trail ride is arranged, Tim’s location is 1022 Las Vegas Way, Scenic, AZ, and the directions are relatively simple. Drive east on Hillside Drive (next to Smith’s) about three miles, making a right turn onto Scenic Blvd. Continue a little over three miles, turning right onto Las Vegas Way. (Look for mile marker 1 and turn right.) 1022 Las Vegas Way will be on the left, just before the paved road ends. Looking for the lattice fence will also help. Finally, be prepared to have fun!

Mind and Body Fusion A new class that both men and women should consider is Mind-Body Fusion that meets on Monday and Wednesday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. The class is taught by Sun City resident Ann Murphy, who recently moved here from Georgia. She defines Mind-Body Fusion as using our minds to become aware of our limitations and being patient in overcoming them. The class uses an amal-gam of yoga, tai chi, and Pilates disciplines to address physical and emotional needs. Ann Murphy says, “If you haven’t touched your toes for 40 years, you are still welcome. It’s never too late to start an ex-ercise routine. Age is just a number; every day is a new day to learn.” She wants the class to be all-inclusive with all levels—beginner to advanced. Her emphasis is on safety, so she is a hands-on instructor, assuring all poses and exercises are done correctly to avoid injury.

She encourages participants to start with the small things and build into a healthy life. Using medita-tion and chanting for stress reduction, she uses an ancient gong at the end of class as therapy for pain and depression. The class is dynamic, adjusting as needs arise and changes occur. Ann Murphy has been a fitness teacher for fifty years, and she is certified in various disciplines: yoga, Pilates and water aerobics, which she will also begin to teach here at the Pioneer Center. She attends continuing education classes to be re-certified every two years and keep updated on latest techniques in each exercise discipline. She asks, “What is the point of living longer if one is not fit and does not have a good quality of life?” Taking a class that promotes mindfulness of the body’s needs and awareness of health, both physically and emotionally, is a means to a better quality of life. Yoga is a science that works on different parts of the body in a non-invasive way and has been around for more than 2,000 years as a way to keep healthy. Ann urges people to try yoga and make small steps toward a healthy mind and healthy body.

Weeds Unwanted Plants

Dogs behave in different ways, and do some truly amusing things. Although most of their antics are fun and cute to watch, there are a few that can be related to a health issue. This issue will start a five-article series relating to these behaviors.Article 1 ”Scooting” Scooting doesn’t signify an emergency, but “it’s not a common dog behavior.” People laugh when they see a dog sliding his bottom across the floor or carpet. Scooting is not a healthy sign; it is mostly associated with pain and itching. A common cause is infection of the anal sacs. Anal sacs are small glands located on either side of the anus which normally empty their fluids when the dog excretes. Other conditions that may cause a dog to scoot on its bottom include allergies, tumors and worms. Regular checking of your pet by you and preventive cleaning can help prevent these conditions. To investigate, dog owners should start by lifting their dog’s tail to check for signs of irritation swelling. It’s also important to remember that, occasionally, an itch is just an itch. If checking under the dog’s tail reveals nothing more than the presence of fecal matter, a good bath is in order to clean the area, but if the scooting persists, it’s time for a visit to the vet. Anything that looks out of the ordinary should be checked out by a veterinarian. If you notice any behavior of your dog suspicious or abnormal, please ask your vet for further assistance. • Cats also have anal glands and can have the similar problems.Did You Know?City of Mesquite Codes/Laws/Licenses• All dogs and cats must be licensed annually by January 1. License fee is $6.00.• All dogs, cats and ferrets must be spayed or neutered by the age of six months.

Thanks to above average winter rainfall, the spring weed crop is at record levels. That means that in order to keep our yards up to community standards, homeowners “shall maintain all such yard areas in a weed-free and attractive manner” (CC&Rs, Article 5.7). The most environmentally friendly and natural way to get rid of weeds is via hand-removal. However, this method is not always feasible, as the area covered by weeds may be too extensive or health issues may prevent one from being up to the task. Most landscape weeds are annuals. It is best to target them before they set seed to prevent them from spawning a new generation next year. Pour one gallon of white vinegar into a bucket. Stir in one tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap. The soap causes the vinegar to adhere to the weeds. Blend and funnel the solution into a plastic spray bottle and drench the weeds on a dry, sunny day. Any plants soaked with this solution will die within several days.

Since vinegar is nonselective, it does not care whether it kills weeds or your prized roses. When you spray, do not pull the trigger until you are up close to the targeted weed. Do not spray on a windy day, as the wind could carry the vinegar spray onto your “wanted” plants. There is another limitation in using vinegar as a natural weed killer, but this limitation extends to chemical weed killers, as well. You will probably have to re-apply the vinegar to get the job done, as weeds often refuse to go quietly. However, if you are of a mind to get rid of weeds organically, one assumes that you will be motivated to make repeated applications, as necessary. Unlike commercial weed killers, vinegar is eco-friendly and won’t harm people, pets or the environment.

Chicken MarsalaIngredients• 4 Chicken Breasts• 1teaspoon garlic powder• 1teaspoon each salt and pepper• 4 tablespoons butter, coconut oil, or tallow• 1small package of button mush-rooms• 1/4 cup marsala wineInstructions1. Melt oil/fat in a large skillet that has a lid. Cut chicken in half lengthwise to make it thinner and season with spices. Fry the chick-en in the skillet for 2-3 minutes per side until starting to brown (may have to do a few at a time depending on the size of your skillet.)2. Remove chicken and add sliced mushrooms. Pour wine into skil-let to de-glaze pan and stir with mushrooms for 1minute to let al-cohol cook off.3. Return chicken to pan, cover with lid and reduce heat to a sim-mer. Continue cooking, covered, on low heat for 10-15 minutes un-til chicken is cooked.4. Serve immediately and enjoy. I often serve with a summer salad or steamed broccoli.

Recipe Corner Travel, Day Trips: Hiking Close to Home

In SCM we have an exciting and fun Hiking Club, but if you are looking for a relaxing walk or hike close to home, look no farther than just down the road and around the corner. The Mesquite Regional Park Trailhead is located on the corner of Ben Franklin Way (the road up to the water tank at the bottom of the mesa) and Lower Flat Top Drive. The trailhead includes a covered picnic area with BBQs and tables, educational kiosks and signage, bathrooms, parking and scenic overlooks. You may just want to spend the time at the trailhead enjoying a picnic and the beautiful scenery. The educational kiosks provide information about the plants, animals and surroundings at the Regional Park and feature the history of the valley, geography of the Flat Top Mesa and the weather variations of the native Mojave Desert landscape. The contractor, Mesquite General Contracting, worked with the city to preserve existing sensitive plant species identified on the site and increase populations through re-vegetation of disturbed areas.Take the short drive and take a peek, then plan for a short hike, a day hike or just plan a stroll along Lower Flat Top Drive on the paved trail and enjoy the desert views. Don’t forget your walking or hiking shoes, your sunscreen and lots of water.

Board of Directors Corner by Donna Eads

As we are moving quickly into 2017, the Board and the Finance Committee are working on the budgets for 2018. Both SCM and AMM finished 2016 with positive budgets and 2017 so far is also slightly ahead. One notable problem is the failure of some homeowners to change their payment amount for AMM since it did have an increase in 2017. On the committee side of things, the Architectural Review Committee is in need of a new member. If you are interested, contact either Phil Crapo, our community

manager or Donna Eads. Other committees are working on multiple projects such as the yearly review of the Community Rules and a possible refreshing project of the landscaping surrounding the Pioneer Center. As always our Communication Committee is at work monthly on the newsletter. Many of our capital improvement items are either on order or have arrived as well as reserve items. Projects like new sidewalks at Bocce and the tennis courts continue to improve our amenities. Additional discussions to create a permanent capital improvement fund in our budget are being addressed by the Finance Committee. The weather is warming up and it will be outdoor pool season soon. Remember before entering the pool or spa, a shower is required by everyone for public safety. Also, limit the number of people in the spa to the posted sign. It is not safe or healthy to overload a spa. On the development side, four lots have been sold in the new area, Wishing Well. Work to complete both Frontier Pass and Oxen Ridge continues. Next new area is Crescent Moon which is below Frontier Pass. The next Board of Directors meeting will be held on April 18 at 5 p.m. At that meeting, the Election Committee will be formed. Due to the upcoming election, the coffee chats and this column will cease when requested by the Election Committee.Next Coffee Chat is Friday, April 7 at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
