A SNAPSHOT OF LA POSADA

Dear Friends,

Many of you know that 2017 was La Posada’s 25th anniversary of serving homeless men in North County San Diego and beyond. With this letter, I would like to provide a snapshot of what the hardworking staff of La Posada has accomplished in just their last fiscal year.

Sixty day bridge housing was provided to 462 residents. Of those residents, 62 were veterans, 141 had qualifying mental or physical disabilities, and 17 were chronically homeless. 61% of those men were able to move into housing, with 225 moving to

permanent housing and another 59 moving into longer term transitional housing. In addition, 56 farm workers found housing in La Posada’s farm worker dorm. These men work full time, part time or in seasonal work. During this last fiscal year, La Posada’s dedicated kitchen staff served 29,090 meals, including sack lunches. La Posada staff partnered with the Vista Community Clinic to provide HIV tests for 96 residents, and flu shots for 78 residents. They also worked with the City of Carlsbad and the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency to provide free Hepatitis vaccines for 120 residents.

Through your support, Friends of La Posada donated just over $55,000 to La Posada in cash and direct purchases since our last newsletter (a record for our organization). The cash and purchases were due entirely to the generosity of you, our friends, in participating in our Annual Friendship Drive and Benefit Luncheon, or otherwise donating to Friends of La Posada throughout the year.

Once again it is time to kick off our Friendship Drive for 2018, and we ask that you show your continued commitment to La Posada by renewing (or signing up for the first time) as a “friend” at one of the levels shown below. Donations can be made by mail by using the postage-paid envelope or you can donate online through our website www.friendsoflaposada.org. By donating to Friends of La Posada you ensure that your charitable donations stay right here in our community, with the added benefit of knowing how your hard-earned money is being used.

In closing, on behalf of our entire Board I would like to thank all of you who help La Posada financially and/or by volunteering to help with their operations.

Best regards and with much gratitude,

Tom Maddox President Friends of La Posada

Fundraising Nets La Posada $40,000

In Memory of Margie Monroy This is the first newsletter written without Margie Monroy at the helm as the guiding author and editor. In June, Margie passed away following 23 years of service on the board of the organization now known as Friends of La Posada, originally named Caring Residents of Carlsbad. From the beginning, Margie helped the organization move forward to achieve its goals of providing shelter and a complete program of services for homeless men. Margie also served as secretary for many of those years, before assuming the role of Editor of the Friends of La Posada Newsletter. Margie oversaw the planning of the yearly newsletter with focus, grace and a keen ability to make difficult editorial decisions in a timely manner.

Margie had a long, impressive history of supporting her community. She was an active, beloved member of the local League of Women Voters. She and her husband, Mario, were recipients of various awards, honoring them for their many contributions to the Carlsbad Community throughout her lifetime.

Margie’s 5 children and 13 grandchildren honored Margie at her memorial service with their first-hand impressions of her inspiring and tireless loyalty, faithfulness and support for her family and worthwhile causes. The Friends of La Posada Board already miss her, and are humbly inspired by her legacy of life-long contributions to her family, community and the La Posada de Guadalupe Men’s Shelter. In Margie’s honor, a legacy tile with her name was installed on the wall at La Posada.

Friends of La Posada presented a $15,000 check to Dr. Robert Moser for the benefit of La Posada on February 21st. This was the second check delivered during Catholic Charities’ fiscal year for a total donation of $40,000 from fundraising efforts. The funds will be used to cover, utilities, food, operating and capital expenses. In addition, Friends of La Posada directly funds ancillary services for residents including clothing, bus passes, furnishings, social activities, and more.

“I am proud to support North County’s premier shelter serving local homeless and agricultural workers,” says Board member and Treasurer Pat Dalsin. “The men are admitted alcohol and drug free, anxious to start a new chapter and get their lives back on track.”

Gregory - Native San Diegan, Gregory, 25, was unemployed and without money in the bank. He revealed that he suffered from anxiety and had abused prescription medications. Growing up, he admitted that he repeatedly struggled at home with his father and stepmother. He subsequently became homeless when his stepmother asked him to leave, concerned that Gregory would be a “bad influence” for his younger stepbrother.

From the outset, Gregory has been a positive role model at La Posada, helping all shelter newcomers and maintaining an upbeat attitude and outlook on life. Gregory found full-time employment during his first week at La Posada, earning $11 an hour at Vanguard Industries as a packager. He has also saved $1000 to be used to secure housing, thus fulfilling his housing and employment goals.

Joseph - A 42-year-old California native, Joseph became homeless after losing his job and running out of rent money. At intake, Joseph shared that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and depression, but was not presently taking medication.

Joseph demonstrated his gratitude from day one. He has exceeded expectations with all his chores and his countless positive interactions with staff and other residents. During Joseph’s first week at the shelter, he gained full-time permanent employment as a packager at Vanguard Industries and is on track for a promotion. He currently has saved $1500 towards future housing, also fulfilling his personal goals at La Posada.
