A Message from Mr. Ross... Spring, the most exciting; yet challenging time of the school year for students, teachers, and parents. Thirty- six weeks of school is now down to only six weeks. Six weeks to stay the course, six weeks to improve, and six weeks to learn as much as you can before entering into summer hibernation. With a number of end of the year field trips and our 8th grade recognition program on the horizon, students at Riley Street Middle School have a lot to look forward to. Too often with young teens and tweens looking ahead can often lead to being forgetful about the present. Students are encouraged to stay the course and display the same study habits they have all year. Parental expectations play a large role in helping our students achieve at the highest level. Please encourage your student(s) to stay laser- focused on the academic tasks in front of them as they gleefully await the “fun” stuff taking place around school to wrap up the year. Behavioral expectations remain the same for our students regardless of what month the calendar reads. It remains customary for students at Riley Street Middle School to Do What’s Right, Treat Others Well, and to Do Their Personal Best. Lately, we’ve seen a spike in student behaviors and poor decisions that can have a negative impact on our school culture. Below I listed a few areas that I’d appreciate all parents taking the opportunity to discuss with their children: Peer Conflict ~ Assist your student in developing an appropriate response or strategy to use when they disagree with someone, feel hurt or wronged by someone. Dress Requirements / Hygiene ~ Assist your student in choosing modest clothing to wear that is in compliance with our dress requirements and appropriate for current weather conditions. The warm days ahead will also require even the most reluctant student to stay mindful of cleanliness and daily use of deodorant. Social Media / Technology ~ Assist your student and provide clear expectations for online behavior if you allow them to partake. Mr. Murphy, Mrs. Brady and I have been addressing a number of social immaturity issues lately tied directly to texting and snapchat. Consider moving your child offline or begin using many of the parental control features to stay involved in your child’s digital world. A Message from Mr. Ross...

Spring, the most exciting; yet challenging time of the school year for students, teachers, and parents. Thirty-six weeks of school is now down to only six weeks.

Please encourage your student(s) to stay laser-focused on the academic tasks in front of them as they gleefully await the “fun” stuff taking place around school to wrap up the year.

Below I listed a few areas that I’d appreciate all parents taking the opportunity to discuss with their children:

• Peer Conflict ~ Assist your student in developing an appropriate response or strategy to use when they disagree with someone, feel hurt or wronged by someone.

• Dress Requirements / Hygiene ~ Assist your student in choosing modest clothing to wear that is in compliance with our dress requirements and appropriate for current weather conditions. The warm days ahead will also require even the most reluctant student to stay mindful of cleanliness and daily use of deodorant.

• Social Media / Technology ~ Assist your student and provide clear expectations for online behavior if you allow them to partake. Mr. Murphy, Mrs. Brady and I have been addressing a number of social immaturity issues lately tied directly to texting and snapchat. Consider moving your child offline or begin using many of the parental control features to stay involved in your child’s digital world.

Thanks for your partnership and entrusting us with your children. The staff and I consider it a privilege to work alongside the students and parents of Riley Street Middle School.

Union and Confederate generals will be making important decisions guiding their "armies" to victory.  We start our day with parent volunteers serving breakfast to the troops which will be followed up with our parade through the halls around 9:00 am.  The first battle will follow this parade. At noon we will break for lunch and rest before we finish up the battles by 2:00 pm. Please join us and encourage our 8th graders as they reenforce the knowledge that they gained in history class out on the battlefield.

RMS Ugandan Water Envelope Campaign Student Information Who: RMS student body, staff and friends

What: Two and three years ago, RMS partnered with The Ugandan Water Project and raised enough funds to provide 6 water catchment systems to primary schools in the Raki District of rural Uganda. A secondary school, from which these primary schools will feed into, is now in the process of being built. It will have six buildings providing both classroom and dormitory areas to 1200 students. This school is located close enough to a nearby lake to provide water but the water is not safe for human consumption. It needs to be filtered to remove the waterborne bacteria that cause intestinal diseases. Riley Street would like to raise enough funds ($3,600) and partner with a local organization, Set Free Ministries, to purchase water filtering devices. These filters will remove the bacteria and other pollutants from the lake water and provide safe, clean drinking water to the students and surrounding villagers. Where: Rural UgandaWhen: April 22 through May 10, 2019Why: To provide RMS students an opportunity to make a difference in the world.

For adults:Set Free Ministries is a 501(c)(3) organization. If donations are made out to Set Free Ministries, a tax receipt will be generated and sent to the address on the check. Please write “RMS Water Project” on the memo line.

7th Grade End of Year Field Trip ~ Our 7th graders will have the opportunity to attend a fun and exciting end of year field trip to 3 Mile Project in Grand Rapids on Thursday, May 16. The 3 Mile Project is a youth community center that features activities such as: basketball, volleyball, foosball, pool tables, movie theatre, video game stations, gagaball and a ninja course. While it's our hope that all of our 7th graders attend the field trip, it would not be in good conscience for us, as educators, to allow students who have missing work, or are failing a class, to attend this school function. Therefore, 7th grade students who have missing assignments or are failing a class as of Friday, May 10th will remain at school on May 16 for academic support. Your son/daughter received their permission slip this week. It is due no later than May 3. Please fill it out and return it, even if you are not sure if your child will be able to go. We will refund any monies paid if that happens.

Parents of 6th Grade Students: Immunizations ~ Most 6th grade students need a couple of new immunizations (Meningitis and T-dap) after turning 11 and before entering 7th grade. Students are assessed as they enter 7th grade and must be up-to-date before they can start school for their 7th grade year. As your 6th grader has their well-child check-ups and receives the updated immunizations, please obtain a copy of their updated official immunization record and give a copy to the RMS office anytime this year. (We are required to have a copy of this official document in their file.) Immunization Waivers ~ If you are a parent who chooses to waive immunizations for your child, please know that if you haven’t gotten a new waiver since your child turned 11, you will most likely need to get a new waiver which states Riley Street Middle School as the current school and also includes the new immunizations that were not previously required. Getting a new waiver requires making an appointment at the Ottawa County Department of Public Health (Hudsonville Branch Office Phone: 616-669-0040). Only waivers that are obtained this way are accepted as valid. If you have any questions or would like us to check on the current waiver, please contact Anne Erickson at 616.896.1920 or at [email protected].
