Oakwood flutist to solo with MVSOOakwood resident and flutist

Kathy Murphy will be the featuredsoloist with the Miami ValleySymphony Orchestra at its May 2and 3 concerts. As winner of theClark J. Haines ConcertoCompetition, Kathy will be perform-ing the “Suite Antique” for flute andorchestra by John Rutter. The annu-al concerto competition honors thelate Clark Haines, who served as aconductor for the MVSO as well asmany other area performing groups.

Kathy Murphy is by professionan engineer, holding bachelor’s andmaster’s degrees in chemical andmechanical engineering, respective-ly. The flute, however, has been apassionately pursued interest sincechildhood. Raised in Connecticut,Kathy studied with Leslie Frankel ofthe Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra.She sat first chair in the ConnecticutAll-State Band as a high school sen-ior and played four years with theNorwalk Youth Symphony, then con-sidered one of the best youth sym-phonies in the nation. Kathy mostrecently studied with Jane Berkner ofthe Akron Symphony (OH), capping

her studies with solo recitals in 2000and 2001. Relocating to Dayton in2004 brought with it delightful andexpanded musical opportunities. Arecital performance of Mozart’sConcerto for Flute and Harp withBolivian National Symphony princi-ple harpist and former Oakwood res-ident Jessica Schaeffer in 2006, aswell as a performance of JohnRutter’s choral masterpiece“Magnificat” as part of an orchestramade up of DPO strings and Band ofFlight winds have been highlights.

Kathy renewed formal study of theflute with Dr. Christopher Chaffee ofWright State University inSeptember 2008. She is a member ofthe Kettering Civic Band, plays forchurch and weddings, and doesmusical theatre pit orchestra workfor the Dayton Playhouse, SinclairCommunity College and local highschools. She also tutors flute as avolunteer in the Oakwood elemen-tary schools and teaches privately.

The MVSO, under the directionof Dr. Kenneth Kohlenberg, willpresent Felix Mendelsson’s Overturefor Winds, John Rutter’s SuiteAntique, and Dmitri Shostakovich’sSymphony No. 5. Art exhibit at Brown Oak StudioAn art exhibit by two local
