Oakwood flutist to solo with MVSOOakwood resident and flutist

Kathy Murphy will be the featuredsoloist with the Miami ValleySymphony Orchestra at its May 2and 3 concerts. As winner of theClark J. Haines ConcertoCompetition, Kathy will be perform-ing the “Suite Antique” for flute andorchestra by John Rutter. The annu-al concerto competition honors thelate Clark Haines, who served as aconductor for the MVSO as well asmany other area performing groups.

Kathy Murphy is by professionan engineer, holding bachelor’s andmaster’s degrees in chemical andmechanical engineering, respective-ly. The flute, however, has been apassionately pursued interest sincechildhood. Raised in Connecticut,Kathy studied with Leslie Frankel ofthe Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra.She sat first chair in the ConnecticutAll-State Band as a high school sen-ior and played four years with theNorwalk Youth Symphony, then con-sidered one of the best youth sym-phonies in the nation. Kathy mostrecently studied with Jane Berkner ofthe Akron Symphony (OH), capping

her studies with solo recitals in 2000and 2001. Relocating to Dayton in2004 brought with it delightful andexpanded musical opportunities. Arecital performance of Mozart’sConcerto for Flute and Harp withBolivian National Symphony princi-ple harpist and former Oakwood res-ident Jessica Schaeffer in 2006, aswell as a performance of JohnRutter’s choral masterpiece“Magnificat” as part of an orchestramade up of DPO strings and Band ofFlight winds have been highlights.

Kathy renewed formal study of theflute with Dr. Christopher Chaffee ofWright State University inSeptember 2008. She is a member ofthe Kettering Civic Band, plays forchurch and weddings, and doesmusical theatre pit orchestra workfor the Dayton Playhouse, SinclairCommunity College and local highschools. She also tutors flute as avolunteer in the Oakwood elemen-tary schools and teaches privately.

The MVSO, under the directionof Dr. Kenneth Kohlenberg, willpresent Felix Mendelsson’s Overturefor Winds, John Rutter’s SuiteAntique, and Dmitri Shostakovich’sSymphony No. 5. Concerts will beheld on Saturday, May 2 at 8 p.m. atEpiphany Lutheran Church inCenterville (6430 Far Hills Avenue,Centerville 45459) and Sunday,May 3 at 3 p.m. at Shiloh Church(5300 Philadelphia Dr., Dayton45415). Unchained III opens May 1Link Gallery, 519 East Fifth

Street, an art gallery in TheOregon Arts District and home toa group of Dayton’s most notableartists, is celebrating its FirstAnniversary with a group exhibit

featuring all of the artists that thegallery represents. It will includean impressive collection of paint-ings, drawings, photographs,sculpture, prints, mixed media,and blown glass.

Call for entries – The View 2009Rosewood Gallery in Kettering,

Ohio, announces a call for entriesfor The View 2009, A LandscapeCompetition-a juried exhibitioncreated as a showcase for Ohioartists presenting traditional or con-temporary views of landscape orland imagery, environmental

themes and world issues. Entriesmust be original works in anymedia (2-D or 3-D), completedwithin the last four years, and notexceeding 60 inches in width.Jurying will be done from slidesand digital images. Work previous-ly exhibited at Rosewood is not eli-

Outremont, is asking for youngOakwood residents (ages 11-18) tosubmit two-dimensional works of artfor Outremont’s annual internationalBlizz’Art competition. Many prizeswill be awarded, and works of art

will be on display from June 18-28.Qualified students wishing to submita work of art must register with theOakwood Sister City Associationbefore April 28th by sending an e-mail to [email protected] with the following information:

Art exhibit at Brown Oak StudioAn art exhibit by two local

artists are on view at Brown OakStudio, 860 Brown St. Oil paintingsby Pam Adams are on display.Colors glow with Adams’ colorsensibility and one will become

quickly absorbed in the serenedepictions of the artist.

Along with Adams will be colorphotographic works by ToshioTamaki. Travel abroad to the specialplaces Toshio has visited and see the

glorious scenes his eye has captured.Also available are the assorted

antiques and hand-painted furniturepieces of Linda Staley. Hand-craftedcards, jewelry and one-of-a-kinditems also adorn the studio.
