From the Principal (Relieving)
The next two weeks, starting this Monday 19 August, will see our Year 12 students sit
for their Trial HSC Exams. These exams form a major part of the students school based
assessment mark and provide the opportunity for students to complete exams that are
the same length of those in the HSC exam - most being 3 hours. It is important the rest
of the school is quiet around exam spaces to minimise disruption to the students; these
will be in the Stockton Hall (MPC) for the first two days and then moved to F-Block.
We hope that all our Year 12 students do well and use these exams to identify areas of
strength and those that require more study. A copy of the exam timetable is in this
Newsletter.
On Monday 12 August we ran our Year 10 into Year 11 Information Evening. This
provided students and their families the opportunity to learn more about courses that
are offered, what we provide at Bellingen High School for our senior students and to
speak to subject experts about what they teach and what is required to complete that
course. This event was catered for by our Year 11 Hospitality students and their teacher
Ms Meldrum, along with some additional support from Teegan and Kelsey Williamson-
Leslie, who were a great help in sharing their experiences with the Year 11 students. A
reminder that Year 10 students need to complete the online subject selection form and
then book a meeting time with Mrs Gorman who will be supported by various head
teachers to ensure student choices best suit their skills and interests.
Recently we had students competing at the regional Debating finals with Bellingen High
School making the quarter finals, thanks to the efforts of Mr Cross and Ms Campbell.
Then on Thursday 8 August we had students attend the North Coast Athletics Carnival
with three students being named Age Champions - Josh Upsall (12 years boys), Max
Cracknell (13 years boys) and Willow Neal (17 years girls). This is a great effort with our
students competing against students from 39 other schools across the North Coast.
Bellingen High School finished 3rd overall, which showcases the effort of all students
who attended. Well done!
On Monday 26 August we will be holding a Parent Teacher Evening for Years 7,8 and
9 in the Stockton Hall. Bookings for this will be online and an online access code and
further information will be supplied shortly. If you cannot access this online please
contact the school’s Front Office who can talk you through it, or make a booking for
you. The evening will run from 3.45pm to 7.00pm. Year 10 will continue their
interviews for subject selections with Mrs Gorman along with Head Teachers.
Our school uniform remains a focus and we expect students to be in full uniform. If
there are reasons this cannot happen students need to collect a uniform slip from Jaimie
Garson at the Library or the Deputy Principal. As the weather warms up and we move
back into our summer uniform a reminder that for boys it is the blue school polo shirt
and grey shorts; for the girls it is also the blue school polo shirt and either the school
skirt or blue shorts both of which need to be an appropriate length. If you need any
support in getting your student in uniform please contact the Front Office.
On Thursday we had a tour group of teachers from Fiji visit our school as part of an
initiative run by Rotary Australia. Our Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students along with
Ms Meldrum, Ms Jeanes and Ms Williams helped to cater for the group and the food
was excellent with the Fijian’s very grateful and impressed by the work of our students.
At the luncheon our Head Teachers and Fijian teachers were able to exchange ideas and
knowledge about school curriculum, subjects, size of classes and teaching resources -
having an interactive whiteboard in their whole school was unusual making us realise
that we are very lucky to have one in most classes. Bellingen High gift bags were
presented to each of our visitors and special thanks goes to Ms Meldrum, Ms Jeanes and
our Hospitality students for their catering, along with our retired Principals Paul Holding
and Bob Stockton who gave their time to speak to the Fijian Principal’s.

Square Meater Cattle Visits Farm
Five head of cattle visited the farm this week. They were well cared for by Year 9 and
10 Agriculture.
The purpose is to train and present them at the Lismore Show in October. A lot of work
still needs to be done however at this stage they should be ready to parade.
Well done, Year 9 and Year 10 Agriculture.
The Chickens are growing
The Year 7 Science Chicken Project is
progressing well. All the chickens are now
tagged and cared for by many students
during class, and in the Chicken Club at
lunch times. These chickens may be
purchased by the students. Most of them
will become the 2020 farm layer flock, and
provide free range eggs that are sold
throughout the Bellingen Community.
The Raised Garden Project
All the gardens have now been fully
erected. Every student now has the
chance to grow flowers and vegetables
in a raised garden, in a very clean
environment. The students have
replanted their gardens, and have been
learning about the differences between
organic and chemical fertiliser.
Enjoy the Produce!
The Goats are great!
Wow. All you need are a couple of goats and you can attract a
crowd. Our two little goats are providing so much enjoyment to
many students. They are provided with milk, pelleted feed, and
with much appreciated guidance from our school friend, Jane
Molloy, a wide range of leaves.
The goats are now doing well, overcoming a difficult first week.
Their names are Donkey and Bambi, and loved by all.
If you have a chance to visit the farm, make time to say hello to
our little goats.
We need more goats!
Show Report and Red Poll Cattle Camp
There are 61 days to the Lismore Show. Come to Cattle Club and see Mr Boyd if you
would like to attend. I encourage everyone interested in cattle to also attend the Red
Poll Cattle Camp which is held on the last weekend of the October school holidays, just
before the Lismore Show. See Mr Boyd or check out the Red Poll Cattle Site for more
details. Students attending the camp will learn a lot about showing cattle and will use
their learned knowledge at the Lismore Show.

Year 10 Geography Fieldwork Excursion
On Tuesday 30th July, the Year 10 Geography students visited Coffs Harbour to
complement the HSIE unit on Environmental Change and Management; Coasts.
Students enjoyed a beautiful day at Park Beach and the Jetty precinct, as they studied
the longshore drift, power of the waves and changes along a dune transect. This
fieldwork was a vital part of their geographical research assessment task, where students
gather data, identify natural and human environmental change along the coastline,
suggest management strategies and discuss their effectiveness. Students also gain an
understanding of the different worldviews associated with each environmental change.
The students had an awesome day and all now have a good understanding and
appreciation of how important it is to look after our coasts and to be actively involved
in local community issues. Many thanks to Mr Core who assisted on the day.

Nihongo Report
So how does Mr Boyd, the Agriculture teacher also teach Japanese?
Well some of you may not know that “Boyd Sensei” used to live with his entire family in
Japan. For nearly 12 years in total. He was teaching English, racing in Japanese triathlons
and even bought a tractor to grow Japanese rice to compare it to our Aussie rice.
The students in Boyd Sensei’s Japanese class have been working hard to learn some handy
phrases. Not only has this been done by bookwork, but through food tasting, Hiragana
Karate belt training for script recognition and participating in the Amazing Race where
clues were hidden around the school. This week we have a quizlet challenge – test yourself
to see how you score.
https://quizlet.com/subject/bellosensei/
The link above is the one you need to learn the Japanese phrases that we are focusing on
in Japanese at the moment. Please check out Unit 5 of the bellosensei quizlet challenge
(no spaces). Here are a few phrases to get you warmed up.
Doko ni ikimasu ka Where are you going?
Okinawa ni ikimasu I’m going to Okinawa
(Side note: Okinawa is Japan’s Hawaii with great beaches and warm weather year round
https://www.visitokinawa.jp/ it is also the site of a fierce land battle where the armed
forces entered Japan during the war in an attempt to approach the mainland via island-
hopping but the Japanese refused to give up and tried to take on the army as civilians.
Dare to ikimasu ka Who are you going with?
Tomodachi to ikimasu I’m going with a friend

Sport News Three North Coast Age Champions
Bellingen High School had a small squad of only 22 athletes representing at the North
Coast Athletics Carnival at the Stadium in Coffs Harbour on Thursday 8th August. Many
more students had qualified but due to injury and a three-day Year 10 Camp the squad
was much smaller than previous years. Obviously size doesn’t matter as the athletes
that competed achieved amazing results.
The North Coast CHS Carnival involves athletes from 39 schools from Tweed Heads in
the north to Wauchope in the south. Bellingen High managed to have 3 age Champions
on the day, which is outstanding:
Josh Upsall 12 years boys Champion 1st 800m, 80m Hurdles, High Jump
Max Cracknell 13 years boys Champion 1st 100m, 200m, 90m Hurdles
Willow Neal 17 years+ girls Champion 1st 400m, Triple Jump
2nd 800m, High Jump
Other individuals to qualify for the NSWCHS Championships by finishing in the top 2
in their event were:
Anthony Heather 13 years boys 2nd 100m
Kyan Upsall 14 years boys 1st 800m, 1500m
Bonnie Malt 13 years girls 1st 80m Hurdles
Djarrah Clarke 14 years boys 2nd 100m Hurdles
Emily Kilpatrick 16 years girls 100m Hurdles
Sam Case 15 years boys 2nd 1500m Walk
Lulu McGrath 13 years girls 1st Long Jump, Triple Jump
Eliza Cross 13 years girls 2nd Discus
Special mention must go to Lulu McGrath as a 13 year old competing in a 12-15 year old
age bracket for the girls’ Triple Jump. Not just did Lulu beat girls up to 2 years older
than her but across all age groups on the day she posted the second biggest jump.
Obviously she has a big future.
The great achievements were not all individuals as 3 Bellingen teams qualified for
NSWCHS State Carnival in the 4 x 100m age relay teams.
13 years girls 2nd Lulu McGrath, Jayme Garrett, Bonnie Malt, Tiara Salmon
14 years boys 1st Anthony Heather, Max Cracknell, Kyan Upsall, Djarrah Clarke
17 years+ 1st Willow Neal, Holly Pagulayan-McCabe, Ashley Sticker,
Sophie Keough
The 14 years girls’ team missed out narrowly by just over half a second due to some
ordinary baton changes. With just a little more practice next year they should qualify
too.
Overall, Bellingen High School was placed 3rd on points out of the 39 schools only beaten
by teams twice their size. What a great result and fantastic to see so many young
athletes doing so well!

Community Hub Workshops
The Alithia Learning Space runs various workshops for
collaborative innovation, holistic development and a range
of hands-on activities designed for children aged 6 to
12, located in a disadvantaged area of NSW.
Given the problems that arise in rural low-socio economic
areas, Alithia's core focus is to ensure the mental health and
well-being of young children, preventing them from becoming youths at risk.
Alithia works with various children, meeting the needs of those requiring social and
emotional support, those that are neuro-diverse (Autistic Spectrum, ADHD,
Aspergus), those from minority groups (including Australia's indigenous), those
experiencing learning difficulties and hardships, as well as children who are in need of
a nurturing, creative environment and opportunities.
At the core of Alithia is a set of positive communication tools. These techniques
create a trusting space where people feel accepted and supported. Within this non-
judgmental environment, participants can build a sense of purpose and capability, while
being supported on their own unique learning journey. We understand that every
individual has a unique way of learning and of approaching the world. Our workshops
are flexible and adaptive to empower children from a young age.
Term 3 we will be offering activities at the Bellingen Scout Hall, covering Tuesday -
Friday. We run 2 workshops per day (9am-12pm and 12pm-3pm). We have a
coordinator / head mentor each day (with backgrounds in therapy, working with
disabilities, positive communication training, nature confidence building etc.) to
oversee things, share skills, and offer guidance, plus a volunteer on a roster to come
in and share their skills for a 3-hour block (workshops include "permaculture gardening
and woodwork" or "drama and creative writing"). Some of our children are enrolled in
school and require extra support each week for their well-being / confidence/ focus,
and others have had to be Home Educated due to difficulties at school with
social/emotional/learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
Our committee are all volunteers, working to provide additional support in our rural
area for those kids that need it, to reduce the number of youths at risk and to provide
inspiration and support for those who learn differently. The community hub is open to
families as they need it, with parents also finding a community of support.
