Cross Country Success For Bellingen

Twenty three eager and fit students represented Bellingen Public School at last week’s Zone Cross Country Carnival in Grafton. There

were many personal best performances on the day with three students making it through to Regional level in Lismore on 7

th June -

Kyan Upsall first in 8/9 year boys; Kiahn Lane fourth in 12/13 boys and Jacquelline Kambere second in 12/13 year girls. Gabrielle

Kelsey (12/13 year girls); Emily Ruming (11year girls) and Zoe Ladi (8/9 year girls) are reserves. This means they came seventh or

Our school as a centre of learning

I’d like to acknowledge all of our staff this week. I am very proud to lead a school whereby all our staff lead in such fantastic ways, with such commitment.

How do I know this? Several indicators would tell me this – including parent and carer feedback, student wellbeing in each classroom (= happy kids) and a deep commitment to improvement in their

practices (look at the Tools 4 Learning program now operating in most classrooms.)

But more than this, to watch each of our staff actively seek out leadership learning opportunities is remarkable. Examples include:

Shireen is currently learning about the new business systems being trialed for schools;

6 staff are now trained in Austism Spectrum Disorder learnings and catering to student needs; and

Katharine leading the development of some important literacy and numeracy programs that correspond with the National curriculum.

I am very proud in leading a school that I believe has a key role as a lead learning institution within our community, for students, staff & community.

Anti-Racism

In light of recent media reporting on events within the wider community it was a reminder of just how successful Bellingen Public School is in ensuring that harmony and tolerance are key values taught in our school.

As part of the Department’s Anti-Racism policy schools are required to record and report to the department on all racist incidents within the school, and have a trained Anti-Racism Officer.

Racism is a rare occurrence in Bellingen Public School, (2 small events over the past years). If an event does arise it is dealt with discreetly and sensitively by our two Anti-Racism Officers – Katharine Sutherland and Fiona Vardabasso.

Eisteddfod News

I was very proud of our students who shared their talents with the wider community at the Coffs Harbour District Eisteddfod last week.

The string groups arrived at the racecourse with instruments and stands just as the 200mls fell from the sky!

We waded through the ankle deep wash but nothing could dampen our enthusiasm. Playing like the little legends they are, both senior and the combined ensemble (involving every player learning at our school) were awarded highly commended certificates. We were the only public school competing in our section.

On Monday and Tuesday the choirs had their turn. I was quietly relieved to see St Augustines not in the program as they are our stiffest competition, but they were there on the day!

Stage two sang their first song unaccompanied. They were led by Xavier Stephen who sang the song as a solo before the choir echoed in unison and then as a round. The adjudicator was very impressed with this skill level from our choir. Again, a highly commended!

The Opera House Choir sang amongst 10 other schools. The competition was stiff and our repertoire most challenging. We had to share around the trophy we have held for two years so that schools continue to want to compete! We came home in third place and our very mature students analysed how we could have sung better.

The next day we sang in the Medley Section. We had percussionists,

a beautiful violinist, Rosabella who had composed her own harmonies to the music and driving enthusiasm from all involved as we sang a group of Australian folk songs. A second place this time and indeed the most pure and quality singing of the Eisteddfod competition.

Cross country clashes and flooding hindered our polished performances this year but we have reason to work even harder for next year…….We want those trophies back!!

Thank you lovely parents for sending such sparkly little singers along. Thank you for coming to watch the concert and also for the bus fare. It is so important that they have these performance opportunities.

Elizabeth Scott,Choir Mam

Stage 1 Choir Concert

Members of Stage 1 sing each week in a 45 minute choir session. Many of the concepts of music are taught through these lessons and we always have lots of fun.

We missed our annual performance at the show this year but would very much like to share our half years’ work with you.

I propose that in two weeks, Monday June 17 we have an ‘open’ choir lesson at the usual time of 12.10 to 12.40 and would like to invite parents, grand parents, and any interested community members to our little concert.

You will be amazed at the student’s memory for lyrics, their ability to switch genres, their part singing and wonderful pitch.

Come along and join in the fun! Ms Scott, Primary Music Specialist

Canteen News The “pinnies/scrolls” have been popular lately so they will become a regular item. This means that something will need to be done about the confusion surrounding the name of these tasty morsels, as our diminutive and imaginative clients have referred to these by many names. Monikers like, pastry twirls, pastry spirals and cheese things.

My favourite is, “those things over there with the ham and cheese in them”, but this would not be a functional term to use on the Canteen Menu. If anyone has a good idea for a name for these delicacies, please write it on a piece of paper with a student’s name and class and drop it in at the canteen before Friday, 14 July. If anyone of these is deemed to be so good that we use it, the Canteen will give a free meal, drink and lunch-time treat to the student named with the suggestion. Since the weather has turned a little nippy of late I thought that some hearty soups would be in order for this week’s special. Pea & ham and chicken & corn will be the varieties available this week and as usual they will be available on Thursday and Friday for $3.50 or $5.00 with a drink. Eddy Vardabasso, Canteen Manager

School Parliament

Last Friday was our school first parliament session for 2013. We had a discussion about if and when we could put up the football posts. The class representatives and the ministers talked and we came to a motion that the football posts and lines would be put up but we would get the lines marked before we put the posts up. This motion was carried (this topic was brought up by the 5/6K representative).

Next we had a discussion about having tables and chairs in the shelter. Many people didn’t want tables and chairs so when the motion came that we will get ables and chairs for the shelter most people disagreed. Until there was an admendment made that we would get tables and chairs we would just get more of the silver seats, this motion was carried. (This topic was brought up by the 5/6S representative). Overall it was a good parliament session. Look forward to having more silver seats and having football posts with lines marked as well. By Teegan Williamson-Leslie (Minister of Communication).
