PASTOR’S CORNER

Help us to meet our costs this fiscal year! Based on current giving averages, we project a $100,000.00 shortfall for this year's budget. Expenses are as expected and have not exceeded the budget. Our shortfall comes in donations to our parish. How can you help? 1) Sign up for automatic giving online. On average parishioners attend 35 Masses out of 52 weeks which has affected weekly giving. Please sign up for automatic withdrawals through ConnectNow. This provides a stable revenue for our church and enables us to run our parish, school and pastoral care efficiently. 2) Please consider an additional gift today. Any amount is appreciated and valued. It all adds up quickly when everyone pitches in. If you have any questions regarding how to give, please contact Monica Cardenas, Director of Stewardship.

Friends:

Early in my priesthood, I found something of a theme when young married couples sought some counseling. With a risk of exhibiting chauvinism, part of the theme has to do with a difference between men and women.

In a counseling session with both, I found that often the young wife would say something to the effect of “I know he loves me, but he never says it.” The response to this comes from the young husband as something like “If she knows I love her, why do I need to say it?” Let me say that these young couples are generally always still deeply in love. It is just the case that communication (its manner and frequency) is something they are growing into in their first months of married life.

As is generally the case, the real needs of their loving marriage lay somewhere between them. For their love to remain strong, and grow stronger – for it to reflect their sacramental transformation and further that transformation, one needs to speak more clearly and the other needs to hear more clearly.

Not only is this a good tenet to live by in Christian marriage, it is also a good way to begin to understand the loving experi-ence which is the Sacrament of Confession. God absolutely knows our love for Him, and we can be confident in the love that God has for us. But we need to speak of that love, and we need to hear of that love.

Just like a couple working to protect and grow their love, speaking aloud one’s faults, fears, need for forgiveness, and promise of amendment makes our relationship with God stronger. Just like hearing a promise and commitment, even if we already know it is there, when the priest (on behalf of Christ) offers counsel, penance and absolution, he makes it possible that words of love and concern will ring in your ears.

This week, on Wednesday, April 10th, Archbishop Jerome

Listecki has called for an archdiocesan-wide, Day of Reconciliation. Over and above regularly scheduled offerings of sacramental Reconciliation, at ten parish sites spread throughout the archdiocese, for twelve straight hours, multiple priests will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. From 8:00am to 8:00pm this Wednesday, St. Monica will be the site in our area where three to six priests will be available at all times.

This is a wonderful opportunity to make an experience of the Sacrament of Reconciliation an important part of your Lenten preparations. Even if it has been a long time since you went to confession, this can be your chance to speak of love, and hear of love. The priests here will be welcoming, kind, helpful and forgiving.

Please do seriously consider taking a few moments this Wednesday and come to St. Monica Church for a wonderful sacramental moment.

Lenten Blessings to all!

SCHOOL NOTES

LENTEN PROJECT 2019

On Thursday, March 21, students wore their school spirit wear and celebrated Mix It Up Day. This event is part of a nationwide school program and is designed to foster a spirit of inclusion and acceptance in the school community. Students were each assigned to a team named for a particular country at the beginning of the school year. Ordinarily, students sit at lunch with other students from their same grade, but on Mix It Up Day they had a chance to get to know their teammates, so the tables were filled with students of all ages, genders, and grade levels. Older students were able to help younger students with their lunch trays and their cold weather gear, while younger students relished the attention from the big kids they look up to. Teachers joined in the fun and ate their lunches with the students as well. It was a fun, mixed-up day enjoyed by all! If you want to see these mixed-up teams compete, please join us in the East parking lot at the beginning of the school day on May 24 for our annual Junior Olympics and cheer for your favorite student or country. Often described as “the best day of the year”, the morning will begin with a flag

ceremony and a blessing, and then students will compete in a variety of track and field events, including sprinting, long jump, and shot put, just to name a few. Even the kindergarten classes will be a part of the action with a variety of games and plenty of playground time. The day will wrap up in Mackin Hall with a medal ceremony to recognize the winning teams. Please come out to cheer for our athletes, and say a prayer for plenty of sunshine!

The money raised this year for the Sustainable Agriculture program that benefits our Sister Parish, Our Lady Queen of Apostles, in Nkokonjeru, Uganda will again go towards their piggery project. The pig sty is halfway complete. The travelers from St. Eugene who recently visited our Sister Parish was able to see the pig sty. It is quite state of the art. It has individual stalls for each pig and larger stalls for sows with newborn piglets. Each stall has a source of water that is turned on when the pig pushes it with its snout. The manure is washed down the back of the stall into a drainage canal that then ends up in a large manure pit (see photo of Fr. Lawrence, pastor of OLQA standing next to the manure pit.) Fr. Lawrence said the manure is essential to fertilize crops that the farmers plant such as pineapple, bananas, coffee, and mango as well as other crops. Besides the money going towards finishing the pig sty, it will also be used to buy good breeds of piglets. A good breed costs about $200 per piglet and $100 will pay for feed, vitamins and vaccinations for the piglet until maturity. Once the piglets are grown, they are then given to the sub-parishes in the area and handed out to other parishioners. Each sub-parish has a catechist that is educated in raising pigs and they in turn will educate other farmers and give those farmers piglets to raise. THANK YOU ST. EUGENE for your ongoing support of the Lenten Projects. You are all so generous! Please continue to pray for our family in Uganda. God is Good! All the Time! - The Twinning Committee

MARK YOUR CALENDARS Sandwich Saturday DATE CHANGE! Sandwich Saturday is a week earlier on April 13th at 9am. All ages are welcome to help make sandwiches for the Milwaukee Hope House. Please bring lunch meat, unwrapped cheese slices and margarine for sandwich making. Hope to see you there! ——–———————————————————————— Finding Hope and Peace in the Busy Life As a busy woman, life is filled with many blessings and opportunities, but sometimes it becomes bogged down with stress, fatigue, loneliness, anxiety and fear. Explore how Jesus wants us to navigate these moments during Tammy Groszczyk’s talk on the evening of April 10th. This talk will be held at Firstfruits in Elm Grove from 6:45-8:15 p.m. and is part of a 2-day Mini Retreat (you do not need to attend all of the sessions offered). The cost is $15. Learn more and register to attend at firstfruits.info/events. —–-————————————————————————- The 72nd Annual St Monica Sports Night is on Thursday, April 11th. As is our tradition with this event, we will have a great auction, including autographed items and sports tickets, and we will honor the 2018-2019 8th grade student-athletes. The funds raised help in supporting the athletics program at St Monica School, including the new resurfacing, painting, and coating the gym floor from this past summer, and new bleachers and out-door basketball hoops this year. Our guest speaker will be Joe Sherburne, former St Monica student and University of Maryland, Baltimore County Division I basketball player. Joe will have stories to share about his college basketball experience, his team's run in the NCAA Tournament last season, and his balancing of athletics and academics as a disciplined student-athlete, which will be followed by Q&A time with him after he speaks! The doors will open at 6pm, with a donation of $10 for adults and $6 for children under 12. Pizza and refreshments will be served for those in attendance. And, of course, we will have the ever-popular 3-point shooting contest where three lucky winners will be paired with our celebrities. We hope to see you there! ——————————————————————————- St Monica Blood Pressure Clinic is in the Assist room (near the elevator) on Saturday, April 20th after 5pm Mass and Sunday after the 8 and 10:15 Masses. Hope to see you there! ——————————————————————————-
