Courier  15             April 8 – April 14, 2019

$2,700 to purchase a sound system for the Ivy Room Lounge. The grant was submitted on behalf of the performers and patrons of the Ivy Room in order to improve residents’ listening experience, especially for those with hearing impairments. The second grant in the amount of $9,390 will support a proposal submitted by the Residents Association’s Fitness Committee to purchase two NuStep machines for the Collington fitness room.

The Collington Foundation proudly awarded its first two Ramsey Scholarship recipients, Nelson Miraflor and Tricia Allard, with over $16,000 in tuition assistance for the upcoming school year. Both Nelson and Tricia were nominated by their supervisors, Suzanne Shabe and JoAnn Pendorf respectively, for their excellence on the job. Nelson and Tricia’s academic endeavors will be featured in the Foundation’s April 2019 newsletter. Please congratulate the recipients when you see them!

The next deadline for grant applications approved by the Residents Association Council is May 25th, 2019. The next deadline for Ramsey Scholarship Applications is August 16th 2019. For more information please contact Suku Powers at x7682 or at [email protected]

Save the Date! May 10th is the Foundation’s Annual Fundraiser. We are hosting an unforgettable Luau! All proceeds will benefit the Annual Fund.

The University of Maryland has selected three 2019-2020 music intern finalists to be interviewed by Collington residents Marilyn Haskel, Louise Huddleston, Carol Kempske and Mary McCutchan for final selection. An announcement about the two interns selected for the coming year will be made in May.

KUDOS! Thank you for recognizing the following:

Hurrah for Rupperts! I've been here 6 years and the grounds look the best ever. The team is working hard and Andre is right there making it happen. Denise Bunting

It is my understanding that landscaping projects fall under your umbrella of duties (Kyle Olsen and Rupperts), so I am writing to let you know that Collington is looking quite beautiful at the moment. The dead leaves are cleared, dead branches gone, bushes trimmed, and gardens edged. Things are looking clean and neat and ready for spring flowers and growth. We moved to Collington in May 2018 and we arrived to find the bushes around our cottage to be reaching up to roof’s edge, with vines growing up through them reaching onto tree branches. So unkempt. I spent hours clearing up around our cottage. What a different scene it is today. Thank you for this enormous improvement. Barbara Anderson

For Cory Hall: I am writing to express my deep appreciation for all that you did to facilitate my mother’s move to Collington. You clearly have a very good

Courier  16             April 8 – April 14, 2019

understanding of and rapport with people. From the beginning, your knowledge of the community and your openness made me, my sister, and my mother comfortable with Collington. We appreciated your availability and your prompt responses to questions in many different areas. You really helped talk all of us through the various aspects of moving, such as finances and healthcare and community connections, and we appreciated your response to her needs as an individual. Though this move turned out to be an unusual undertaking, your involvement with all the aspects of my mother’s move was invaluable. Your understanding of the difficulty of the situation for my mother, and your willingness (and Collington’s) to make accommodations to make the move as effortless as possible, made the whole experience smooth. I feel that you have gone above and beyond to help my mother choose and move in to Collington. You are an invaluable part of a pleasant transition. I am looking forward to many enjoyable years with my mom at Collington. Julia Nichols

I wish to highly commend Chris Jones, Fitzroy, and Russell for their immediate and effective response to a plumbing crisis in our cottage. We greatly appreciated their quick, efficient, and good-humored action. With best regards, Herbert Stone

This is a commendation for Mr. James Jackson who manages The Landing. Mr. Jackson is an energetic, observant manager in the Culinary Services Department. He does whatever job needs to be done at the moment, making sure that diners are served, tables are cleared, and that traffic is running smoothly from the kitchen to the dining tables. He is a hard-working, pleasant person who takes his job seriously and provides excellent customer service. We are lucky to have him on our staff. Sara Case

To the Facilities Team: With the threat of winter pipe freezing behind us, I’d like to take this time to recognize the Facilities Team for their constant monitoring, inspections of past troubled areas and remaining on site (and, overnight!) for the nights when we forecasted a potential issue. I’m unsure of the full history of how long the major pipe breakages go back, but I’ve been told it’s been at least ten years since we’ve gone through the winter season without one! Great job, Facilities Team! Justin Reaves

Kyle Olsen: For six residents to ask that the “red dots” (indicating no landscaping services desired) BE REMOVED, speaks volumes to your abilities and that of your leadership with Ruppe
