April-June 2015 Production Abaca

During the period April-June 2015, production of abaca fibers grew by 2.5 percent, from 18.95 thousand MT in 2014 to 19.42 thousand MT in 2015. These were attributed to the following factors: o favorable weather for stripping, increased demand and good price

in Catanduanes, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur, Negros Oriental, and Bukidnon; and

o additional harvest areas in Davao provinces and in Lanao del Sur.

Production in some areas decreased due to the following factors: o effect of typhoon “Ruby” and “Seniang” in Eastern Samar and

Northern Samar; and o occurrence of bunchy top disease in some abaca farms in the

municipalities of Dolores, Maslog, and Taft in Eastern Samar and in Bontoc, Sogod, Saint Bernard, and City of Maasin in Southern Leyte.

In Aklan, harvesting slowed down due to lesser purchases from traders in Iloilo and Manila.

Bicol Region was the top abaca producer at 8.29 thousand MT representing 42.7 percent share to the national output. Eastern Visayas followed with 19.9 percent share and Davao Region, 10.7 percent.

Coconut

The April-June 2015 production of coconut at 3.41 million MT was 0.8 percent below the 2014 level of 3.43 million MT. The decrease was brought about by the cutting of old trees in Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental and the effect of the following disturbances:

o typhoon “Glenda” in Laguna, Batangas, and Quezon;

o typhoon “Ruby” and “Seniang” in Eastern Samar and Northern

Samar;

o Coconut Scale Insect (CSI) infestation in some areas in Batangas,

Laguna, Cavite, Basilan, and Camarines Sur;

o lesser nuts developed due to intense heat/insufficient soil moisture

in Bohol; and

o effect of dry spell in Zamboanga Sibugay, North Cotabato, and

Sarangani.

Higher production reported in some areas were due to: o additional number of bearing trees in Zamboanga del Norte and

Palawan; and o recovery of coconut trees from the damages brought by typhoon

“Yolanda” in Capiz, Antique, Iloilo, and Aklan.

The top coconut producing regions were Davao Region, Northern

Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, Autonomous Region in Muslim

Mindanao (ARMM), and Eastern Visayas (Figure 2). These regions had

a collective output of 2.01 million MT and comprised 59.0 percent share

to the total coconut production.

Coffee

From April to June 2015, total production of dried coffee berries dropped by 5.7 percent, from 9.47 thousand MT in 2014 to 8.93 thousand MT in 2015. Production of Arabica coffee decreased by 7.7 percent; Excelsa, 7.1 percent; Liberica, 19.6 percent; and Robusta, 4.4 percent. These can be attributed to the following: o cutting of old and less productive trees and effect of dry spell

in Sultan Kudarat; o effect of heavy rains during flowering of the crop and shifting of some

areas to pineapple production and different varieties of banana in Cavite; and

o shifting of some areas to production of Cavendish banana in Compostela Valley and to lakatan, latundan, and cacao in Davao City.

SOCCSKSARGEN topped all the coffee producing regions at 4.29 thousand

MT contributing 48.0 percent to the national output. This was followed

by Davao Region at 16.7 percent, and ARMM by 15.2 percent (Figure 3).

For January-June 2015, area planted to coffee was recorded at 113.02

thousand hectares, 3.1 percent below the 2014 level of 116.59 thousand

hectares. Similarly, number of bearing trees dropped by 4.1 percent,

from 79.54 million in 2014 to 76.25 million.

Rubber

Production of rubber cup lump was estimated at 119.48 thousand MT in April-June 2015. It dropped by 1.1 percent from last year‘s 120.77 thousand MT due to the following: o production in North Cotabato went down by 15.2 percent, from

37.86 thousand MT in 2014 to 32.11 thousand MT in 2015 due to drying-up of some rubber trees, lesser tapping due to dry spell, and low buying price of rubber cup lump;

o effect of dry spell in Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del Norte; and

o some less productive trees in Bukidnon were cut due to low buying price of rubber cup lump.

On the other hand, increase in number of tappable trees resulted to higher output in Basilan by 15.0 percent, from 28.87 thousand MT in 2014 to 33.20 thousand MT in 2015.

The top rubber cup lump producers and their shares to the national output were Zamboanga Peninsula at 44.01 thousand MT; ARMM, 33.49 thousand MT; and SOCCSKSARGEN, 32.31 thousand MT. These regions had a collective output of 109.81 thousand MT and comprised 92.0 percent of the national rubber production (Figure 5).

In January-June 2015, area planted to rubber reached 218.29 thousand hectares, 10.8 percent more than the 2014 level of 196.95 thousand hectares. Likewise, number of tappable trees increased by 13.1 percent, from 48.36 million trees in 2014 to 54.70 million MT.

Sugarcane

The April-June 2015 production of sugarcane for all uses dropped by

15.4 percent, from 3.17 million MT in 2014 to 2.68 million MT in 2015

attributed to the following factors:

o decrease in yield due to lesser fertilizer usage in Negros Occidental

and Capiz; o effect of dry spell in Negros Occidental, Iloilo, and Negros Oriental;

o shifting of some areas to production of Cavendish banana in Davao

del Sur.

Higher production were noted in Batangas and Bukidnon due to

expansion in area harvested.

Of the total sugarcane production, the share intended for centrifugal

sugar was at 93.6 percent.

Western Visayas, the top sugarcane producer at 1.23 million MT represented 45.8 percent to total sugarcane production during the reference period. CALABARZON followed with 16.9 percent and Northern Mindanao, 16.6 percent (Figure 5).

For January-June 2015, area planted to sugarcane was recorded at 275.65 thousand hectares, 2.2 percent smaller than last year’s 281.83 thousand hectares.

Tobacco

The April-June 2015 production of tobacco at 42.21 thousand MT was 13.0 percent lower than last year’s 48.50 thousand MT.

Virginia tobacco production decreased by 2.1 percent, from 19.56 thousand MT in 2014 to 19.15 thousand MT in 2015.

Ilocos Norte largely affects the decline in Virginia tobacco attributed to insufficient soil moisture and shifting to production of garlic, eggplant, and pepper due to better price.

Production of Native tobacco at 7.31 thousand MT was 20.1 percent below the 2014 level of 9.14 thousand MT attributed to the decrease in area planted in Isabela and Cagayan.

For other varieties of tobacco which were mostly Burley, production dropped by 20.4 percent, from 19.80 thousand MT last year to 15.76 thousand MT this year. This could be attributed to decrease in area planted due to limited financial assistance to farmers in Isabela and Occidental Mindoro.

Ilocos was the top tobacco producing region of the country at 28.09 thousand MT and shared 66.6 percent to total tobacco production. Cagayan Valley ranked second with 27.5 percent share.

For January-June 2015, Ilocos Region recorded the largest area planted at 23.22 thousand hectares representing 72.6 percent to the total area planted to tobacco at 31.97 thousand hectares.
