COMING IN JULY 2016Ferini Art Gallery Postcard Auction fundraiser for The SeagullFerini Art Gallery is delighted to once again be collaborating with The Seagull on a fundraising project. This time it’s the Ferini Art Gallery annual Pakefield Postcard Auction. Now in it’s third year - it raised just over £1000 for EACH (East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices) in 2014 and £2500 in 2015 for Lord Kitchener’s Memorial Holiday Centre. Ferini Art Gallery invite their artists to paint or create an original piece of art on a postcard size piece of card supplied by Thistles, another local company. You can see all the postcards in an exhibition at the Ferini Art Gallery shortly before the auction and make a pre-bid before the live auction which is to be held at Pakefield Church Hall (dates to be confirmed). We then make selection from those postcards and put together a calendar for the following year. We hope this year we can raise even more for our local theatre which we believe is the heart of our community offering a wide range of opportunities and events in all areas of the performing arts.

Happy New Year! Well, here we are! Straight into 2016 with a new brochure, new shows,

plays, musical events and charity nights. For the next four months, our bucket collection supports the local company ‘Involve’. Please take the time to read inside about the wonderful things they are doing to support families and young people with additional needs in Lowestoft and the surrounding area. I am pleased (as punch) to announce that for the first time in many years the Seagull Theatre, with thanks to the Seagull Rep, will be presenting a full scale musical. The much loved cult-classic ‘Little Shop Of Horrors’ will be on for six performances only so make sure you get your seats and join Audrey and Seymour down on ‘Skid Row’ For folk music lovers, we have so many treats in store for you! Phil Beer and Steve Knightly, both of the critically acclaimed ‘Show Of Hands’, as well as Martin Carthy are all performing in this brochure, we are thrilled to welcome them to The Seagull, so don’t delay in booking your tickets as they are sure to sell out quickly. Lots of other music events are happening too, so be sure to check them out, including our Open Mic Nights hosted by Chris Thurston. These are proving very popular and if you fancy a slot to perform then get in touch or just come along and hear the acts on offer. We also have plenty of plays booked in from near and far to provide us with some great entertainment. Be sure to catch as many of them as you can! We are very proud to play host to so many small theatre

companies and giving them the opportunity to showcase what they have produced. Eastern Angles are back with a fantastic drama set during the Second World War when the American Air Force came to town and changed the course of history. Definitely not one to miss. Who remembers the 80’s? The big hair, padded shoulders, those brat-pack films….well guess what? We are bringing back the most loved 80’s films this year and maybe even beyond, let’s face it the list is endless. Our first one is Ghostbusters, so make a note of the date and I will see you there. Our recent half-term clown workshop and circus show proved very popular with children and parents so we have got them back for February half term. Getting hold of clowns is a very tricky business so make sure you book early to be sure of a place on the workshop. In short, the range of entertainment, activities and opportunities is as varied and fun as ever. Welcoming new faces to our small venue is almost as exciting to us as welcoming back familiar faces. If you’re a new customer, a former regular or a bit of a ‘Lovie’, drop in and say hello. We’re always looking for new ways to engage with the community and for ways to invest in the people around us. If there is something you would like to see here, or a way in which you would like to be involved, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

ForgottenIn youth, he struggled against social prejudice and personal circumstance; in marriage, the loss of five beloved children and his wife’s progressive mental illness; in his work, he shocked the rich with scenes of poverty and poorhouses - the narrow, dividing line. This is George Crabbe’s haunting story. Forgotten is our specially-written production, portraying the personal, social, literary and scientific dramas (both comic and tragic) in the life of East Anglia’s greatest poet. Here is the true story of Peter Grimes, and of George Crabbe, its true author.

Saturday 23rd April £8/£7(conc) 7.30pm St George’s Theatre present

Sweeney ToddSt George’s Theatre Group return to the Seagull with their performance of the non-musical Sweeney Todd melodrama. The intense horror show is brought to the stage following the story of the crazed barber returning to London to avenge his family, accompanied by a sea captain, Anthony. Anthony falls in love with the evil Judge’s ward who happens to be Todd’s daughter. Todd meanwhile sets up with Mrs Lovett, the pie maker, and provides her with fillings for her pies. The play has some scenes of horror and some bad language. Suitable for ages 14+.

William Shakespeare’s Twelfth NightCome with us to enjoy a night in Illyria where love, identity, music and mishap combine to hilarious effect. One of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies brings to the Seagull a motley collection of Dukes, shipwrecked maidens, ennobled fools, and fatuous manservants. Our heroine Viola takes on the guise of a serving man and falls in love with Duke Orsino, who is in turn in love with Olivia. Olivia though falls for Viola in disguise and latterly with her twin brother Sebastian. Meanwhile Malvolio is the victim of Toby Belch’s vicious pranks and Feste’s mockery. Luckily all is resolved by the end of the night …. But how ?

The Seagull is an intimate 112 seat theatre in Lowestoft, Suffolk that plays host to a regular stream of local talent, regional and national

touring theatre companies & bands offering a diverse program for all ages and tastes. The Seagull Theatre was originally The Morton Road School until the early 1960s when it was converted to the building that exists today. In 2006 Suffolk County Council withdrew their funding which caused its temporary closure. As a result of this the SOS (‘Save our Seagull’) group was formed, the patrons of which were Oscar-winning Dame Judi Dench and Laurence Olivier Award winning Desmond Barrit. Dame Judi pledged her personal support to the campaigners fighting to save the theatre. The Seagull was saved and reopened in 2007 and has since been renovated. We have now established status as a Community Interest Company and we truly believe we have an important role to play as a dedicated community performing arts centre. We are continually working on community projects in addition to working very closely with local schools. We currently receive no continuous outside funding. We have 3 large studios, office space and a theatre with licensed bar to rent for private functions and we are continually working on improving the building as finances allow. The theatre has its own in-house production company, The Seagull Rep, and is also home to many local companies as well as two theatre schools. The Seagull’s continuing survival is dependent upon its volunteers. We are always looking for new volunteers, so if you’d like to help us either doing something technical, administrative or just want to help make teas, we can always use new people. To find out more, email us at [email protected], call us on (01502) 589726 or like us on Facebook. If you have an email address please join our marketing list to receive up to date information and special offers. If you have already visited the Seagull and enjoyed your experience, we hope you will return and please tell all your friends and family. If you have not, please come and give us a look and see one of the vast variety of shows and events we have on offer. Also, we always welcome new ideas. The Seagull is a community theatre and we need the community to be involved so we can provide events, facilities and services that you, the audience, would like to see.

Many thanks for your support.
