Sams Desk Walking Challenge Feb. 01-Aug 31, 2017 BONUS:

The month after we started our walking challenge, I received the fol-lowing email from Gail at head office. When I called Yvonne the contact, and asked her if our walking program would qualify for her initiative she said it would. As follows, it is my intention to complete what is required for us to have a chance at $5000.00, when fundraising will be scarce:

We are moving forward with the Alberta Healthy Communities Approach to Can-cer and Chronic Disease Prevention. Based on the data collected we are looking for community ideas and action plans on how this is going to look like in Edson. Here is how it works: Using SMART Goals S - be specific M - measurable A - achievable R - realistic with your resources, cost and time T - timely can it be done It should fall under one of the 5 Elements to a Healthy Community Approach: Physical Activity, Healthy Diet / Nutrition, Reducing Tobacco, reducing the use of/ access to al-cohol, UV Protection. This project can be Community based to invole Health, Schools, Workplace, and Community Organizations. You have $5000 to apply for. Ideas to get you started: holding mocktails at lunch time or at community functions, making sure there is policy in place for no smoking and signage and enforcement on the school ground, walking school bus, school community garden, and providing samples of sunscreen at school & community events, walk to work, neighbourhood/block parties or gathering, options are endless use your creativity and expertise around the table to build a community action plan. 1. What is your Project? Who makes up your Community School Team? 2. What strategies will you use to achieve your goal? 3. Who will your Project target? 4. What is your objective? What is the behaviour you are trying to change? 5. What activity (s) are you going to take on to achieve your goal? 6. What resources will you need? Financial, human /volunteers building etc 7. What is your Time Line to complete the project? You have until December 2017 to complete and evaluate the project 8. Evaluation? What is it you are trying to achieve? Increase, decrease promote educate and awareness... 9. How are you going to Share/Celebrate your success? Community Block party, social media etc... If anyone wants to help me with this report, I am happy for the help. You could just get a note pad, and make your notes and hand it in to me. I am happy to include your ideas.

Thanks, Sam Page 2

Quote of the Month: “I glanced out the window at the signs of spring. The sky was almost blue, the trees were almost budding, the sun was almost bright.” ― Millard Kaufman, Birthstone of the Month: Diamonds, the birthstone of April, are commonly associated with love which make it the perfect gift for a loved one. While white dia-monds are most com-mon, fancy col-ored diamonds can be found in vari-ous colors including yellow, blue, pink

and a variety of others as well.

Birth Flower of the Month: is the daisy which con-veys innocence, loyal love, and purity. It is also a flower given between friends to keep a secret; the

daisy means “I’ll never tell.” The oth-er April flower is the sweet pea. Sweet peas signify blissful pleasure,

but are also used to say good-bye.

We managed to take our Annual Spring shopping trip to Hinton last month too. It

was a wonderful day! I think we experienced

all 4 seasons...rain, snow, & some sun!
