Dear Brockport Community,

On Tuesday, April 17, the Brockport Board of Education selected superintendent semi-finalists from a strong candidate pool.

The next step of the search process will involve members of the Brockport community, including staff, students and business representatives, who will interview candidates in early May.

The Board is thankful for your participation in the Brockport Superintendent Questionnaire, which yielded 174 responses. Your input has been reviewed by the Board and will be helpful throughout the search process. Superintendent finalists will be announced in mid-May and you will have another opportunity to provide feedback after attending the Superintendent Finalist Forums. The forums are scheduled for May 22, 23 and 24. Each finalist will spend a day in the District and attend a community forum to answer questions from those in attendance. Following the community forum, a final interview will take place with the Brockport Board of Education.

The Board plans to appoint the new superintendent in June with an anticipated start date in mid-July.

Remember to check the Virtual Backpack!There is so much to do in our community this spring and summer! Check out some of the activities and camps posted in the virtual backpack at www.bcs1.org and remember to check back frequently as more information is added on a regular basis.

Together Time at the TableThe Ginther cafeteria was filled with families at the 7th annual Together Time at the Table on March 22. The dinner encourages families to make a commitment to have meals together frequently. Research shows that dinner together is one of the most valuable things a family can do to prevent at-risk behavior in their children.

“Conversation starters” at each table provided an opportunity to talk about the day’s activities while enjoying the spaghetti dinner prepared by Brockport’s Food Service Department. Ginther staff volunteers and high school student volunteers served dinner during the luau-themed event organized by Ginther’s Student Assistance Team with the help of Food Service Director Jim Liebow. Thanks to the PTSA for providing dessert and to Barilla America, Upstate Farms, Red Gold and Bimbo Bakeries for their donations.

UPK Applications Due May 14If your child will be four years old by December 1, 2012 and is a District resident, he or she is eligible for the grant funded Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) program. Names for the available slots will be selected through a lottery process. If your child is not yet registered to receive pre-K related mailings, call the Registrar’s Office at 637-1857. Applications were mailed in April to all eligible families on record. Lottery applications must be returned by noon on May 14.

Information about the program may be found on the District’s website at www.bcs1.org/upk or you may contact Cherie Black at 637-1816.

School Safety ExcellenceBrockport CSD recently received the highest, titanium level with honors, School Safety Excellence Award from Utica National Insurance Group for the eighth consecutive year. At Utica National’s annual school safety seminar on March 30, District officials were presented with a plaque and a $500 award, which will be used to further safety efforts.

Brockport’s safety committee meets monthly to examine how the District carries out safety and security measures and ensures that any concerns are addressed. The committee also has presentations about current topics such as concussion management and holds “table top drills” where members review hypothetical scenarios to test emergency procedures. The committee includes representatives from every school building, operations and maintenance, security, athletics, transportation, food services, school nursing staff, parents, and representatives from the District’s insurance company.

Senior Citizens Invited to Breakfast Senior citizen residents of the Brockport Central School District are invited to a complimentary breakfast at the A.D. Oliver Middle School cafeteria on Tuesday, May 22 from 8-9:15 a.m., 40 Allen Street. The breakfast, hosted by student council members, is held annually to recognize and support the important connections between our community’s youth and senior citizens.

The event includes a buffet breakfast with student council members, student performers, staff, administrators, and Board of Education members. Student selections from performing groups will provide lively and enjoyable entertainment following the meal.

Seniors are asked to RSVP by Monday, May 7 by calling the A.D. Oliver Middle School Office at 637-1860 or by emailing student council advisors at [email protected] or [email protected].

There is limited parking available, so use of shuttle buses to and from the middle school is encouraged. Buses will pick up seniors from the Sweden Senior Center parking lot at 7:20 a.m.

A.D. Oliver Middle School students who came out on top of the SIFMA Foundation’s Stock Market Game were presented with a Brockport’s Best Award by the Board of Education on March 6.

Chevy Ioannone, Malena Laing, Brianna Lewis, Antonia Medina and Nadia Onofreychuk competed against 52 school teams in Western New York, finishing first in the region and 18th out of 614 teams across New York State. As part of the game, students invested a fictitious $100,000 in an online portfolio October through December.

Teacher Jon VanHuben was also honored with a Brockport’s Best award for teaching the students about the ins and outs of the stock market.

Vice President Mike Andriatch expressed the Board’s pride for all the students who participated in the competition.

“We really enjoy hearing about these real-life opportunities for students,” Andriatch said. “The economic and financial concepts that you have learned during this project are things you will use for the rest of your life.”

Dignity for All Students ActIn 2010, the New York State Legislature passed the “Dignity for All Students Act,” also referred to as “DASA,” to address issues related to harassment and discrimination in schools. The goal of DASA is to provide public elementary and secondary school students with a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying on school property, a school bus, or at a school function.

The law becomes effective on July 1, 2012 and requires schools to take steps to ensure that their environment is conducive to learning and allows students to feel comfortable, safe, and secure at school or school-related activities. Brockport Central School District continues to focus on providing a safe and secure learning environment for its students and has taken the steps necessary to implement this new law. Name Becca Lynn Markel

Family Married to Chad Markel for almost 11 years. We met at SUNY Brockport while we were in college. We both fell in love with a

local church, which led us to fall in love with the town, then we fell in love with each other and decided we wanted to put down roots here. I have three children. Xavier is 7 and is in 2nd grade; Isaiah is 5 and is in pre-k, and Mackenzie is 11 months old.

Occupation I wear many hats! First and foremost I am a stay at home mom. My husband and I are also the youth directors at Christ Community Church in Brockport. (Chad’s full time job however is teaching at School Without Walls in the city) We oversee the college and high school ministry. We go to the college every Tuesday night for bible study. Fridays we have worship nights at the church and Sundays are the youth group meetings. We have about 30 college and 10 high school students in our group. This keeps us extremely busy! We are also elders in our church. I also baby-sit a couple times a week.

Why did you want to be on the PTSA Executive board?Many reasons. Besides Jesus and my husband, my kids are my top priority. I want to be involved in their education as much as possible and I found that PTSA was the right avenue for me to do that. Being a stay at home mom has given me the time that is needed to put into being a chair at Ginther. Being on the board has helped me foster great relationships with teachers, faculty and staff in the schools. It has

forced me to keep myself informed on what is going on in the district overall and not just at my kids level.

What was one misconception you had about PTSA before you got involved?I thought that the PTSA was mostly just parents putting on events for the kids in the schools. I was ignorant to the fact that the PTSA as a national organization has by laws and procedures we need to follow. I was also ignorant to the amount of positive change that has happened for our children because of the PTSA. Things like child safety (seat belts in buses), programs to help students succeed, literacy programs, etc.

What do you like to do in your leisure time with your family?Since life is incredibly busy for us we have deemed Wednesday night as our Family Fun Night. We are always doing some thing different. We like to go to the park, bike ride, play tennis, basketball and board games. In the summer, we like to go camping and swim.

What do you like to do when you get time to yourself?What is that?!?! When I finally get a few minutes by myself there are a few TV shows I like to keep up with like Parenthood and Parks and Recreation. I love going out with my friends for coffee. Every once in a while I pick up a book and actually read the whole thing. And I love to go shopping at Kohls. Kohls is my kryptonite.

Anything else you’d like readers to know about you or the PTSA?Another misconception I think people have about the PTSA is that you have to be heavily involved. That’s not true. You can be involved as much or as little as you have time for, but there is power in numbers. I feel like the more members we have, the bigger voice we have for our children.

Our talented Hill and Barclay teachers caught a wave and decorated surfboards for our teacher Book Fair contest. At the Hill school, Mrs. Wilson was our 4th grade winner and Mrs. Gardner and Mr. Resseguie (with even votes) were our 5th grade winners. At the Barclay school, Mrs. Ray was the winner. Each teacher won $25.00 in books for their classroom libraries.

PTSA received many thank you notes from our Hill students for their Read Across America books.

Our Hill students collected $60.00 and our Barclay students collected $40.00 for the One 4 Books Program. The School Libraries received many new books and Scholastic will donate a book for every dollar collected to one of three charitable organizations. THANK YOU!

PTSA would like to thank our wonderful volunteers, our dedicated teachers, our principals, and our custodial staff for ALL that they do to support our students and PTSA.

On March 29 and 30th the Brockport PTSA sponsored a visit by children’s author Marsha Hayles to the Ginther School.

In addition to speaking to all children in kindergarten and first grade, Hayles also enjoyed breakfast with winners of the PTSA’s “Breakfast with the Author” contest.

All kindergarten and first graders were invited to enter the contest

by drawing something to do with Marsha and her writing. One winner from each class had breakfast with Marsha where they got to talk about writing on a more intimate level.

The Brockport PTSA thanks Jeanne Covert and Becca Markel, Ginther Co-Chairs, for making this a wonderfully inspiring and successful event to promote reading and writing.

PTSA NewsPTSA Brings Author Marsha Hayles to Ginther School

A Wegmans TourChris Albrecht's students participated in the Eat Well, Live Well 4th Grade Tour at the Brockport Wegmans recently. The tour aligned well with the fourth grade health curriculum which uses a program called the Healthy Body Shop. All fourth graders participate in this field trip which has been sponsored by Wegmans for more than 15 years.

Students learned about the benefits of whole grains, healthy fats, and calcium-rich foods that give them energy to learn, play, and grow. Students sampled tasty, nutritious foods from the produce, dairy, meat and bakery departments and were given facts varying from nutritional content to the geography of the world as it relates to where the food is imported. In the Produce Department, students learned to 'make a fist' as a measure for a kids-sized portion of produce. Their visit concluded with a scavenger hunt and they received a goody bag from Wegmans with a loaf of bread and some coupons to take home.

In March Brockport High School science teacher Rosemary Catlin invited Brownie Troop 634 to her classroom to learn about flora and fauna. As shown in the photo, Mrs. Catlin's students also helped teach the girls. Said troop leader and Brockport PTSA board member Jeanne Covert: "Mrs. Catlin gave the girls a very positive experience and made them love science."

The Brockport PTSA hosted BHS social studies teacher James Cannon at their March board meeting. Mr. Cannon spoke about his vision of creating a “Community Hub.” Said Mr. Cannon: “The more we can find ways to get our kids engaged in school it’s a win-win situation for all of us.” Thanks to Mr. Cannon for this informative and exciting presentation.

Alumni Feature: Bob Iveson Retires from BoardBob Iveson has served on Brockport’s Board for 10 years and will complete his final term in June. Over the years he has worn many hats for the District—all with the common thread of having the students’ best interests at heart.

The decision to not seek re-election was a difficult one. Mr. Iveson has enjoyed his time serving on the Board, the partnerships he’s formed and is proud of the Board’s achievements during his tenure. He credits the five-year terms for the stability to achieve Board goals.

“The turnover is low and the wide diversity in our backgrounds is an asset when making decisions,” said Mr. Iveson. “I will miss the cordial camaraderie of the Board and I particularly respect the leadership of current president, Tom Langelotti.”

Mr. Langelotti shares a mutual respect and appreciation for Mr. Iveson's leadership.

"Bob's quiet leadership and keen insight into complex issues will be missed," said Mr. Langelotti." During his tenure, he certainly had the kids best interests in mind when making decisions."

Mr. Iveson is grateful for the increased safety that the new bus garage provides and happy for the decision to move it off our campus. What he likes best about his participation on the Board is being involved in helping to direct school policy and attempting to ‘keep Brockport, Brockport’.

“We have a far more excellent school system than most people realize, based on my experience conducting workshops in many different parts of the country,” said Mr. Iveson. “Our unique campus with five schools together adjacent to a college campus is one thing that sets us apart. Our excellent, dedicated staff is another.”

He may be retiring from Brockport’s Board of Education, however he remains a “Brockportian” to the core. The 1955 Brockport grad is the “number one boys basketball fan” (as stated on his Athletic Wall of Honor plaque). The basketball gene runs in the Iveson family, starting with his dad who won back-to-back state championships in 1929 and 1930. Mr. Iveson’s support to the basketball program has been rock-solid. He began writing up games for the newspapers in 1972 as a way to give the Brockport players more recognition. He co-founded the basketball boosters club in 1975.

“Bob is passionate about the students at Brockport Central,” said 6th grade teacher and basketball coach Scott Schlede. “He has invested tremendous time and effort into making sure the students in Brockport receive quality education in top notch facilities. He has touched many people in his time serving our school district and will be missed.”

Mr Iveson's contributions will continue in his retirement from the Board. Not only will he be found at athletic events with his notebook and pen; he will be seen in classrooms carrying his insect collection to educate students about his favorite hobby. Retired from Ward’s Natural Science, Mr. Iveson continues to educate students about insects. In addition to making visits to schools in Monroe County, he has made presentations at Science Explorations Days at St. John Fisher College for the last 40 years.

Mr. Iveson looks forward to continuing his science talks with specimens from Ward’s and to planning some exotic travels with his dear wife Jean.

“From here on out, things are not important, experiences are,” said Mr. Iveson.

As part of Board Goal #3, which is to Enhance Board Achievement, the Board and administration have become more active in their advocacy efforts for public education. These advocacy efforts have involved reaching out to local legislators to share with them the importance of adequate educational funding and the cost of unfunded mandates on school budgets and the impact of these mandates on the school’s mission. The most recent legislative visits included Assemblyman Bill Reilich who visited the Hill School in February and Senator George Maziarz who visited the High School in March.

Board Trustee Ray Gabriel, Superintendent Garry Stone, Assistant Superintendent for Business Darrin Winkley and building principals met with legislators following school tours with the principals and some students to discuss important issues facing Brockport Schools. New teacher evaluations and diminishing state aid were among the topics discussed during these visits.

“I thought the visits were positive,” said Mr. Gabriel. “It allowed our representatives a chance to see what is happening in our schools. It was interesting to observe the interaction between the students, senator and assemblymen. I think both sides enjoyed the time spent together.”

The meetings also helped provide some insight into the workings of the State Legislature and gave the District some helpful tips moving forward.

“The reoccurring message was to keep the pressure on Albany so that issues affecting schools will be heard,” said Mr. Gabriel. “It was suggested to write personal notes to our representatives (instead of form letters). The more people who write to their representatives about how the school cuts are affecting their children and their lives, the greater the chance that we will be heard.”

Exceptions: 5 HR. Driving Course requires in-person registration at Brockport High School.

Program InformationThe fees paid by participants finance our program, which is not school tax supported. It is necessary in most classes to have a minimum registration requirement to maintain our self-supporting program. Classes not meeting minimum registration will be cancelled. Notification will be made prior to the first class session, and a refund will be issued. Refunds will be processed only if classes are cancelled. Fees for registration do not include the cost of books, materials, or supplies, unless noted.

The Broadway IntensiveBroadway performers Geoff and Chelsea Packard will teach this three-day musical theatre workshop. Geoff, a BHS 2000 graduate, has performed on Broadway in Phantom of the Opera and Rock of Ages. Chelsea has performed on Broadway in Wicked and Promises, Promises.

Brockport Blue Devil Swim ClinicIs your child interested in improving their swimming ability or do they just want to get into better shape? If so, you may be interested in this swim camp that is being offered by the coaches of the Brockport High School Swim Team. This program will be offered to any student entering 7th through 12th grades in September 2012. Swimmers will work on improving the four basic competitive strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle). Starts, turns, stroke technique and drills will be covered each day, as well.

Effective October 1, 1987, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles of the State of New York requires five hours of classroom instruction as a prerequisite for obtaining a driver’s license. Applicants affected by this regulation are those applying for a first time driver’s license; those applying for a driver’s license because of lapse of one-year renewal grace period; and those applying for a new driver’s license as a result of revocation of previous license.

The five-hour training period must be completed prior to the applicant applying for a road test. Persons having completed a regular driving education course do not need this program.

The following regulations are applicable to all prospective registrants:

• Registration must be completed at the High School in person by noon on the Tuesday immediately preceding the class

• Students will be admitted on a first come first serve basis• Applicants must be 16 years of age or older

• Must bring their valid learner’s permit to registration • Must pay the $45.00 registration fee and completely fill out the registration blank

Classroom instruction will be held on Thursdays specified. These classes will be held in Brockport Middle School, room 175 from 3:30 – 8:30 pm.

An official completion Certificate, which is valid for one year from the day of issuance, will be awarded upon completion of the five-hour program. This certificate must be presented when applying for a road test. It does not qualify participants for reduced insurance rates.

Enrolled students will receive instruction in the classroom, behind the wheel, and on the road as required by New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Those successfully completing the class will receive an MV285 certificate that gives the holder the privilege to receive a Class D operator’s license when reaching age 17, allowing them to drive after 9 p.m. Students must be 16 years old by July 1, 2012 and hold a valid NYS Driver Permit or License to be eligible for the course. The Pre-Licensing 5-Hour Course material is included in Driver Education.

Most insurance companies will offer a discount on compulsory car insurance upon request.

Classroom Instruction Students must attend all 16 sessions of classroom instruction in the Oliver Middle School on the scheduled dates. The rooms are 172 and 175. The loan of a text is included in the class fee.Instructors: B. Ellis and R. Fiorito

Driving Groups - will start and end at the Oliver Middle School north parking lot. ALL students must attend ALL classroom and road classes to receive a certificate (MV285). Should a make-up driving class be requested by a student due to extenuating circumstances, they will be scheduled at the discretion of the instructor. Scheduling of or transportation to the road test are not included. Parents or other qualified adults should plan to devote time for enrolled students to practice the skills learned in this class. Only experience and good judgment makes a safe driver. A current NYS Learner’s Permit must be brought to all classes.

PLEASE BE AWARE OF A CHANGE IN REGISTRATION DIRECTIONS: Please send your payment and completed registration form along with a copy the student’s permit/license to the address listed on the registration form. The cost is $404 for residents, $424 for non-residents. The registration process will end June 15, 2012. Please select your drive groups, listing your choices in order of preference. First priority will be given to resident seniors, then resident juniors, then underclassmen and non-residents. Every effort will be made to accommodate your request. You will be notified by e-mail or telephone and a list will be posted in the High School if you have made it into the summer session. If a registrant did not get into the summer session, they will be notified in writing and placed on a priority list for the next session.

Driving groups may be rescheduled to place four drivers in each time block. Every effort will be made to accommodate rescheduling conflicts. However, the instructor reserves the right to create a schedule that is most effective in terms of number of students scheduled for each driving group.

A Lesson in ForensicsFrom the analysis of fingerprints, textiles, imprints, hair, blood, documents and handwriting; through proper evidence gathering and deductive reasoning, Forensic Science students are introduced to skills in a laboratory setting just as police investigators would while solving crimes.

Board Trustee Gary Zimmer, a retired police officer who works for the BOCES 2 Labor Relations Fingerprinting Service, recently shared his expertise with Mark Dowdell’s Forensic Science class during their fingerprinting unit. He helped students identify and analyze their own fingerprints and talked about how fingerprints can be used as evidence.

“This is a great example of a community member helping to educate the youth in our community,” said Mr. Dowdell. “Actual crime scene investigation is very different than the television shows that go from the crime scene to the laboratory to hard line questioning of suspects to the solution being delivered in 60 minutes. There is much detailed and skilled work necessary for a crime to be properly investigated.”
