One of our most important jobs is to help brighten the communities we serve
What’s the future of the Kansas City
area? At KCP&L we think it’s brighter
than ever. That’s why we’re investing
in programming to improve school
readiness and continued educational
success. That’s why we provide financial
support to vital community groups and
our employees donate thousands of
hours to organizations such as Operation
Breakthrough, Habitat for Humanity and
American Red Cross. And that’s why
we are generating cleaner, greener and
more efficient energy. To learn more,

Bach Aria Soloists Present Music and Letters
Junior League of Wyandotte and Johnson Counties Performs Snow White
The Bach Aria Soloists recently performed Bach’s music as it was originally intended to be performed — in the intimacy of the home. The full-length performances en-
tertained nearly 100 guests at the beautiful home of benefactors, Edith and Benny Lee. Each piece was introduced with dramatic readings of letters writ-ten by Bach, Kreisler, deFalla, and Purcell re-cited by baritone stage actor, Robert Brand.
The Soloists also performed in Kirk Hall at the Kansas City Pub-lic Library’s Central Branch. Admission was free to the public with pre-reserved seats and the hall was filled to capacity. The Theme of the evening was “Notes and Letters” and included both music and historical letters directly from the composers.
The Junior League of Wyandotte and Johnson Counties presented Snow White for their 64th Annual Children’s Theater production, directed by Barb Van Middlesworth.
The cast of volunteers performed for elementary schools from around the city, including Bonner Springs, Shawnee, Olathe, Kansas City, and many others who attended the free performances.
The community was also treated to the Premier performance which was held on Sunday, February 8th at Wyandotte High School.

KVC Celebrates 1000 Adoptions!More than a hundred people gathered to celebrate the
adoption of 1,000 Kansas children ranging in age from a few months old to 19 years old, since July 2005. The event was held at the Ball Conference Center in Olathe on April 2, 2009. “This is a glorious occasion for all of us,” said Wayne Sims, KVC President/CEO. “This is what ev-eryone in the child welfare system works for - tremendous success.” kids planting
KVC works in coopera-tion with:
• the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilita-tion Services (SRS)
• the Kansas Judicial Court System and their represen-tatives
• hundreds of committed community partners to find these loving homes.
KVC is the Kansas foster care and adoption contractor select-ed by SRS for Regions 2 and 3 in northeast Kansas. Region 2 encompasses all of the Kansas City metro area, and Region 3 extends to the Nebraska border and west of Salina.
“Adoption is not about finding children for families, it is about finding families for children,” said Wayne Sims, KVC President and CEO. “Thousands of lives have been enriched and forever blessed by these adoptions.”
An estimated 129,000 children nationwide are in need of adoptive homes.
To celebrate the milestone of 1000 adoptions, balloons dropped from the ceiling. Cool, rainy weather moved the planting of a commemorative garden indoors.
Among those joining the celebration were Kansas Lt. Gov-ernor Mark Parkinson, Olathe Mayor Mike Copeland, adoptive families, and staff from the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services and KVC.

Mayors Prayer BreakfastGreater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce
Photos by: Bob Miller
In 1961, Clair Schroeder, a banker, founded the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast Committee. The first breakfast was held in February of 1962 and was the first prayer breakfast group of its kind in the nation — including members of all faiths, communities, races, creeds, national
origins and ethnic groups in the planning stages as well as inviting them to attend the event. The tradition continues today. The Mattie Rhodes Center, whose mission is to provide bilingual and bicultural mental health and social services tailored especially for Latinos, was chosen to be the beneficiary of the proceeds from this year’s breakfast.

Cabaret ~ 2009Photos by: Bob Miller
Rose Brooks Center, the most comprehensive domestic violence agency in the Midwest, was excited to present Chaka Khan in their signature fundraiser, Cabaret. More than $1 Million dollars
has been raised in Cabaret’s 22-year history, with featured performers entertaining in a one-of-a-kind, high-end, intimate atmosphere. This year’s honorary chairs were Shirley and Fred Pryor, in partnership with the 2009 event chair, Kate Ferrell Banks.
The 2009 Cabaret was a unique chance to see Chaka Khan in an inti-mate, elegant setting! The event kicked off with remarks by Mark Clegg, the master of ceremonies, as well as Susan Miller, the Rose Brooks Cen-ter CEO. A rousing dance floor was created during Ms. Khan’s final song, “I’m Every Woman.”
