CLAY COUNTY WEATHER

November throws her brown cloak around her shoulders and enters our hills, scattering dry leaves in her wake and bringing much colder weather. We have enjoyed a lengthy warm au-tumn, but now the trees are dropping their colorful leaves around their feet, much like a discarded party garment. The earth is snuggling down for her long winter’s sleep as we put away the trappings of summer and prepare for the icy hand of winter.

Hot weather salads and cool drinks give way to steaming soups and hot choc-olate, prompting us to dig out the soup kettle and inspiring mothers (and grandmothers) to bake homemade cookies for the little ones—and big ones too! David Luzader sent in a recipe for chicken soup that is fast and easy. When you are pressed for time and yet want a healthy and wholesome meal for the kids, this is the trick.

QUICK CHICKEN SOUPStart with a 9.75 ounce

can of chicken and 2 ½ cups of water. Mash chicken up with a potato masher (Does it have to be a potato masher, David?) and heat. Dump in one can of bought chicken noodle soup (juice and all,) one can of mixed vegetables and liquid. Add salt and pep-per to taste.

David is one of these “dab of this” and “pinch of that” cooks. His recipe for French toast is different from mine. Here is his recipe in his own words.

FRENCH TOASTPut about 20 saltine crack-

ers, four or five eggs, and a big warp of brown sugar in a blender. Pour in enough milk until it is thin enough to dip bread in. Add cinnamon if desired. Give it a good frying in a hot, greasy skil-let. Eat with sausage cakes,

bacon, syrup and coffee. Sounds good to me.

While we are on this cooking jag, Ray McCune of Fort Wayne, Indiana shares how he cooks puffball mush-rooms. He peels them; slices them in one inch squares and sautés them in a little olive oil. This can be combined with scrambled eggs for a delicious dish. Fall rains have encouraged mushrooms to emerge in many places. Matthew brought in a huge bearded tooth mushroom a couple of days ago. This is a choice edible, especially when young, as it turns sour with age.

These large, fleshy mush-rooms that grow on trees can be cleaned, sliced and then sautéed in garlic butter. Any bitterness can be removed by parboiling them first. There is no danger of eating the wrong thing as there are no poisonous “lookalikes.” Be-fore you eat any wild mush-room, be absolutely sure that your identification is correct, and it is a safe edible.

We had an inquiry about Hunter Mitchell (cancer pa-tient) from Nancy Holbrook of New Haven who was con-cerned about his condition. She writes, “Earlier this year you mentioned Hunter Mitchell in your column. I read this to my church that Sunday and our pastor put him on our prayer list. Could you possibly give us an up-date on Hunter? The church (Bachtel UM Church) would like to know as it touched our hearts.

His grandmother Brenda writes, “Hunter has neuro-blastoma for the third time. He was two years old the first time; a tumor was removed from his spine at the Univer-sity of Kentucky Hospital. They didn’t think any ad-ditional treatment was nec-essary. The tumor returned at age three, and had spread

to his chest cavity, thoracic bone and bone marrow. At UK he went through chemotherapy, ra-diation and surgery to remove the tu-mor again and im-munotherapy. He also had a stem cell

transplant to replace his bone marrow at Cincinnati Chil-dren’s Hospital. This was about two years of treatment, with additional treatment at UK to build his system.”

He is currently undergoing

chemo now at UK. Bren-da writes, “Hunter hasn’t thrown up today. He gets nauseous, and doesn’t eat very much though. He usu-ally eats a sausage biscuit for breakfast without any prob-lems. He’s not allowed to eat for two hours prior to chemo or one hour after. When they give him an appetite enhancer, he eats really well, but every time they’ve given it to him, his liver counts go up and they have to take him off of it.”

This has been this little boy’s life since he was two years old, and now he is eight. In spite of all this, he is a cheerful and happy little boy, and never complains. Please get under a burden of prayer for him and ask God to touch and heal him.

Sherri Stump of Sutton has been searching for a song that her mother cherished, and I hope I have found the one she wanted. This is a fa-vorite of mine too, and has a special meaning to me.

MORNING SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN

There was a girl, there was a boy

If they had met they might have found a world of joyBut she lived on the morn-ing side on the mountain

And he lived on the twilight side of the hill.

They never met, they never

kissedAnd they will never know

what happiness they missedFor she lived on the morning

side of the mountainAnd he lived on the twilight

side of the hill.

For love’s a rose that never grows

Without the kiss of the morning dew

And every Jack must have a Jill

To know the thrill of a dream that comes true.

And you and I are just like

theyFor all we know our love is

just a kiss awayBut you are on the morning

side of the mountainAnd I am on the twilight

side of the hill.

This reminds me so much of “The Road Not Taken.” Last week I was privi-

leged to visit our daughter Crystal who lives in North Carolina, at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains. The mountains were covered in their garments of autumn beauty, which rivaled our own West Virginia hills. It makes a person wonder if God looked down upon Ap-palachia and endowed her with such spectacular beauty that we can barely take it in. I love this poem.

GOD’S WORLD

By Edna St. Vincent Millay O world, I cannot hold thee

close enough!Thy winds, thy wide gray

skies!Thy mists that roll and rise!Thy woods, this autumn day,

that ache and sagAnd all but cry with color!

That gaunt cragTo crush! To lift the lean of

that black bluff!World, world! I cannot get

thee close enough!

Long have I known a glory in it all

But never knew I this,Here such a passion isAs stretcheth me apart.

Lord I do fearThou’st made the world too

beautiful this year.My soul is all but out of

me—let fallNo burning leaf; prithee, let

no bird call.

Meth ArrestBy Erica KearnsA Child Protective Ser-

vices referral ends with one man in jail, charged with at-tempting to operate a meth-amphetamine lab, possession of pseudoephedrine in an altered state, and exposure of children to methamphet-amine x 2. Trooper J. Ellis accompanied CPS workers to a home on Leatherwood Road on Friday, October 31 to investigate possible drug use in a home. The resi-dence in question consisted of one mobile home and two campers, one of which the suspected drug use was sup-posed to have taken place

in. A strong chemical odor was observed coming from one camper and a bottle filled with what appeared to be pill residue could be seen through the front door. When no one answered the door, Trooper Ellis went to the trailer and made contact with Jonathan McGlothlin, who appeared very nervous. After questioning, McGloth-lin admitted to the officer that a methamphetamine lab was located in the trailer and that it did belong to him. A further search of the prem-ises revealed additional bottles with white residue, camp fuel, cold packs, tub-ing, coffee filters and small white baggies. A metham-phetamine lab technician was called to the scene and verified the contents of the camper were that of a meth-amphetamine lab. McGloth-lin was arrested and trans-ported to Central Regional Jail where he remains on $150,000 bond.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Re-sources Conservation Ser-vice (NRCS) announces the application packet dead-line for the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP). Producers interested in participating in the EQIP program may submit ap-plications to NRCS through November 21, 2014.

“During FY 2014, 46 pro-ducers in the Elk Conserva-tion District received fund-ing through various NRCS programs,” Andy Sentz, District Conservationist said. “Producers have used funding to enhance their land with grassland, forestry, wildlife, and seasonal high tunnel projects.”

There are many conser-vation practices available for technical and financial support including livestock watering systems, division or exclusion fencing, heavy use area protection, waste storage facilities, stream crossings, reseedings, timber stand improvement, wildlife habitat practices, and sea-

sonal high tunnels for veg-etable production.

“Our locally based staff can provide technical exper-tise to develop a conserva-tion plan addressing specific objectives and resources concerns on a producer’s property,” said Sentz. “This service is free and available to all agricultural and wood-land producers. We hope more producers will take advantage of this great op-portunity.”

Local NRCS offices ac-cept applications year round. However, for consideration in the first round of 2015 federal fiscal year funding eligible landowners must enroll by submitting their application no later than No-vember 21, 2014. There will likely be a second round of approvals for those submit-ting an application between the November 21 cut-off date and February 20, 2015.

USDA Still Offering Home Loans for Rural AreasInterested in a home

loan that requires no down payment, no pri-vate mortgage insurance, and offers reasonable interest rates? USDA’s Rural Development Sin-gle Family Housing pro-gram might be right for you. USDA Rural De-velopment State Director Bobby Lewis announced today the agency has two home loan programs that are available to pro-vide affordable owner-ship opportunities to rural Americans. These two programs are called the guaranteed loan pro-gram and the direct loan program, both of which allow 100 percent financ-ing at affordable rates and terms. The interest rate for the guaranteed loan is negotiated between the approved lender and the applicant, while the direct loan is made through the

local USDA Rural Devel-opment office. The cur-rent rate is below 4% and may be reduced to 1% for qualifying households.

Funding is now avail-able now for Fiscal Year 2015 and applications are currently being accepted. Lewis said “These pro-grams are successful in providing homeowner-ship to residents of rural West Virginia. We want citizens across the State to know we are here and ready to go.” He added, “For example, in Fiscal Year 2014 USDA Rural Development provided housing assistance in various forms to nearly 2,000 families living in rural West Virginia and totaling more than $264 million.”

Eligibility for both housing programs is based on income, accept-able credit and repayment

ability and the property must be located in a ru-ral area with populations not exceeding 20,000. Sound underwriting cri-teria is used to ensure borrowers are able to re-pay their loans. By doing so, USDA Rural Devel-opment is helping keep people in their homes. You can visit the agency website at http://eligibil-

ity.sc.egov.usda.gov to determine if you are with-in the established income limits based on the size of the household and county as well as determining if the property you wish to purchase is within an eli-gible, rural area.

For more information or questions about Rural Development’s housing program, please contact

the West Virginia State Office at 1-800-295-8228, or you can contact your local USDA Service Center by visiting our website at http://www.rurdev.usda.gov.

Further information on USDA Rural Develop-ment may be obtained by visiting USDA’s web site at http://www.rurdev.usda.gov. In West Virgin-

ia, call 1-800-295-8228 to be put in touch with the appropriate personnel serving your county. Per-sons with disabilities who require alternative means for communication of program information (Braille, large print, au-diotape, etc.) should con-tact USDA’s TARGET Center at 202.720.2600 (voice and TDD).

Mullins Monster Kill

After years of hard hunting, Sherman Mullins was fi-nally able to bag this monster buck. This ten point big boy was brought down by Mullins’ bow Tuesday morning in Valley Fork. Congratulations Sherman!

The Lady Panthers were also in action at home this past week hosting Nicholas County and St. Albans. It was a precursor to this week when the Lady Panthers will participate in the sectional tournament. A top place finish there will send them to the regional tournament the following week. A top place finish there will get them in the big dance at the state fi-nals. The Ladies, for some reason, couldn’t get their game together and lost both final games of the season. They played hard, but mistakes plagued the girls. In order to continue this season, the Lady Pan-thers will have to bring some big game to the court. They have the talent to potentially become state champions, but mistakes will have to stay at the house. Good luck to the Lady Panthers, go and rock the house at Nicholas County on Tuesday night.

From the desk of Mary Ramsey, Clay High Athletic Director

Jimmy Johnson once said, “The difference between or-dinary and extraordinary is that little extra.” This brings the people of Clay County to mind. We would like to start out this week by saying a huge THANK YOU to all the businesses who sponsored our tailgate!!! Our athletes and students enjoyed each tailgate this year, regardless of the weather. We would also like to say THANK YOU to the parents, grand-parents, family members, and friends who cooked, brought food and drinks, and helped with the tailgating in any way. You went over and above to make sure our ath-letes and students had a great experience. You worked tirelessly and made each and every week a success.

It was a sloppy, cold se-nior night, but our seniors were not going to be de-nied. They attacked early and played hard through the whole game, beating Cal-houn County having a very successful senior night. The

Athletic Department and the coaches would like to thank the seniors and their parents for four years of hard work, constant running, and end-less effort. We wish you the very best in your future en-deavors.

Volleyball sectional play begins this Tuesday evening at Nicholas County High School. Clay will play Her-bert Hoover at 5:30, with the loser playing at 7:00 and winner playing at 8:30. Poca plays Nicholas at 5:30, with the winner playing Sission-ville at 7:00. The Sectional Championship round will start on Wednesday night at 5:30 with the Champion-ship game slated to start at 7:00p.m.

Football will play its final regular season game this Fri-day night at Webster County. The Panthers are 5-4 right now and are hoping for a strong finish and a 6-4 re-cord. If you can, make the journey to Webster County this Friday night and cheer on our Panthers!!

Panthers take down Red Devils

It was an up and down week for sports in this coun-ty. First up was the JV Pan-ther team as they hosted the travelling Valley team. The JV team took it to the streets and fought it out with a great defense and offensive power. The boys defeated Valley 24-0 when the smoke final-ly cleared. This was a nice victory leading into the var-sity game against Calhoun. Speaking of which, after the defeat at the hands of the Ra-venswood Red Devils, there was no way the Panthers would go down again at

the hands of devils, namely the Calhoun Red Devils. The Red Devils of Calhoun didn’t know what hit them; the Panthers turned on the fire on a cold rainy evening and iced the Red Devils hopes of a win. It was some of the hardest hitting of the year with pinpoint accuracy on the offense in their last home game of the season, finishing with a score of 38 to 14. They will be on the road in Webster to take on the tough Highlanders this week. Come out and cheer them on to a 6-4 season.

Clay County Panthers Intermediate Football/Cheer BanquetThe Clay County Panthers Intermediate Football/Cheer Banquet is scheduled for Nov. 17, 2014 at Clay County High School. Flag at 5:00, C-Team at 5:30, B-Team at 6:00, A-Team at 6:30

Lady Panthers Lose Both Final GamesMustangs Finish Their Season Saturday Night

The Mustangs also fin-ished up their season Satur-day taking it on the chin in the CWVAC Championship game against the Bears of Summersville Middle losing by the score of 8-38. The team had a rock solid season and can hold their head up high. Unfortunately, in some games no matter how good you play you have to catch a break, and the Mustangs had none. There is something to be said for playing on a neu-tral field in a championship game - enough said. The boys played hard, but when

the skies rain yellow flags and the team takes two steps back for every one gained, it’s tough to win. However, I say bully for Mustang foot-ball! They have been in the hunt every year, have tasted the thrill of victory and will again. Congratulations to the team and their coaches, you did a whale of a job. Con-gratulations also to Caleb Wynn, Walker James, Isaac Cayton, and Luke Burnette who were named All Con-ference players - a well de-served award.

Mustangs head into final match.

Jesus Gives Living WaterBy Lee Roy Anderson

I hear a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ make a statement the other day that is saturated with truth. He said “when God wants to change you the first thing He does is touch your mouth. He was talking about being a Christian. If he were talking about a sinner, the first thing God would touch would be the heart.

God’s word tells us that out of our heart our mouth speaks. Lu 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. When you speak you are identifying what you believe. Heb. 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised) All too often Christians compro-mise their faith by speaking feelings, emo-tions or circumstances. God will honor His Word if we will faithfully speak what He has said, in spite of circumstances.

The Word declares to us and for our benefit that we must live by faith. Heb 10:38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. Once we have declared the Word of God over our circumstances we are instructed by God’s Word to stick to it. When we hear someone

say “it doesn’t work for me” they have drawn back from what God said about the situa-tion. Faith is a powerful weapon. Since faith comes directly from the Word of God which says “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Ro 10:17) we know that faith is based on knowledge. If we don’t know what God’s Word says, then, we can’t release faith. Faith is identifying with truth. God’s Word is truth. Joh 17:17 says “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” God said (Mark 13:31) Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. Matthew 5:18 says “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”

Abraham had to wait for years but God ful-filled His Word. The same with Sarah. How-ever, while they were waiting, they believed God. Elisha died before that which was spo-ken to him came to pass, but it came to pass just the same. It takes more than head knowl-edge. The Word of God must be alive in your heart (spirit). When God has quickened His Word to you, He is telling you what He is go-ing to do if you believe. Just wait, watch and believe for it’s on its way. Praise God!

Maranatha!

When I was in college I didn’t attend many foot-ball games. I didn’t go to many functions. I wasn’t to be found at the bars or par-ties either. When I wasn’t in class, my dorm room, or spending time with my friends there was usually only one place to find me: the library.

I would spend hours there after class and on the week-ends surrounded by books. I was fascinated by the amount of knowledge that was stored between their covers. I devoured volume after volume. I read books on psychology, sociology, history, and philosophy. I read books on theology, faith, and self-help. I ex-plored every area I could in an obsessive quest to find out one thing: “What is the meaning of life?” I was driven to discover why we are here. I had to know what it’s all about. Sadly, four years and a thousand

books later I graduated with a degree but no real answer to my question.

I didn’t give up after col-lege, though. I kept look-ing in books, in nature, in prayer, and in my own heart and soul to find the answer. I never gave up through all the work, struggles, pains, and losses that I went through. After many years too I think that I finally learned the answer to that question and it was so sim-ple. The answer was Love!

Love is what it’s all about. Love is what we are all about. From our first cry as a newborn baby to our last breath before death, love is our purpose. Every hug, every smile, every laugh, every tear, every word of encouragement, every kind act, every helping hand, ev-ery moment of compassion, and every thought we think can lead us to greater love as well. Three of the most important words in the Bi-

ble are: “God is Love.” And when we become one with love we become one with God. Don’t spend your life on anything less. Choose love. Share love. Grow in love. Walk the path of love through all of this life and into the next.

John 4: 7-30 while passing through Sa-maria on His journey from Judea to Gali-lee, Jesus came to Jacob’s well in the city of Sychar. And a woman came to draw water and Jesus said, to her give me a drink John 4:7: The woman asked, how is it that thou being a Jew asketh drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans, John 4:9: Je-sus gives living water. Jesus answered her, If thou knew the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink, thou wouldst have asked of him and he would have given thee living water, John 4:10. Jesus is the gift of God and the giver of living water the Holy Spirit, see John 7:37-39 and whosoever drink of him no longer thirsts for earthy goods. The Holy Spirit shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life, John 4:14: worship God in Spirit and in truth. When the woman asked for this water, Jesus told her to call her husband and she replied that she had no husband. Then Jesus told her of her past life and she perceived that he was a prophet. She said that the Samaritans worshiped in this mountain Mt.Gerizim, while the Jews and they that worship him must worship him

in spirit and in truth. John 4:24, Worship God from your heart, a heart filled with the Holy Spirit and with love from God, in truth, in the beauty of holiness. The woman said she knew that messiahs cometh which is called Christ and he would tell us all things, John 4:25: Then Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he, John 4:26. She then left her water pot, went into the city, and said to the men, come see a man which told me all things that ever I did, is not this the Christ? John 4:29 and many came and believed for they heard him and knew that he is indeed the Christ, the savior of all the world, John 4:42. Jacob’s well is still there. It is nine feet in diameter and over 100 feet deep. It is of the earth and those that drink from it thirst again. Come to Jesus, he gives living water, the Holy Spirit. Drink of living water and thirst no more for earthly things. God is a spirit. Worship him in spirit and truth with your heart filled with the Holy Spirit and with unfeigned love of God. Remember, be a lighthouse of love and spiri-tual values in a secular and broken hearted world. Lighthouses warn weary travelers of both dangers and safety. They point a clear way past destruction.
