Congratulations Graduates

Our best wishes are extended to our

grade six graduates as they move on

to Highland Junior High School or

other schools. They have been well

prepared by the teachers at Arbor

Glen Public School and are ready to

take on the challenges of new

experiences. We expect to hear

good things about our graduates in the future.

School Council

Thank you very much to our School Council

executive: Wendy Huang, Chair, Sally Li, Vice

Chair, Sarah Shen, Secretary and Jane Yi,

Treasurer, and to all the parents who participated in

our Council Meetings and gave us their opinions,

guidance and advice. Your input on behalf of Arbor

Glen is greatly appreciated.

At our first Council meeting of the new academic

year, on September 30th

, a new council executive

will be elected.

All parents/guardians are members of our School

Council and are encouraged to attend our meetings.

Congratulations Ms. Berk

Music Teacher

A special congratulation goes out to Misha K., who was chosen to

perform with Upper Canada chorus for their Broadway showcase last month. Misha, along with several other students from the TDSB performed with some of Toronto’s leading Broadway artists. She is also the recipient of a $250 scholarship toward any learning experience offered by Upper Canada Chorus. Misha had a wonderful performance and we are all very proud of her. We look forward to hearing Misha singing in many future performances in and outside of school.

Good-bye to…

Cayla Biderman, our amazing Teacher Librarian, who is retiring. Ms. Biderman has been the heart and soul of our school. She has blazed a trail and brought our school into the computer age. She has been our ‘go-to’ person for all technology challenges, including the creation of our new web site. She is famous for her banana cake. This week, she baked banana cake so that every student in the school could have a piece. Every teacher and student in the school has received support and guidance from her. We are going to miss her very very much.

Sukhraj Kaur, whose knowledge, friendly smile and dedication have made learning a rewarding and positive experience for her grade four students and for all of the students who worked with her during Bollywood Dance.

Silvia Lopez, our Office Administrator, who replaced our Office Administrator who was on a one year leave of absence. We wish you every happiness at your new school. She will be greatly missed by all.

We thank you for all that you have done for us. We

wish you success and joy in the coming year.

Welcome back to… Michele Sunkel, our Office Administrator, who is returning from a one year leave of absence.

We look forward to having you rejoin our staff

in September.

Have an Active Summer! Ms. Husband

What you can do:

walk, ride a bike, play hockey, run, swim, Frisbee, fling socks, yoga, play in the park...

play: soccer, baseball, basketball, cricket...,

jump rope - (every student got a skipping rope this year thanks to the heart and stroke foundation)

I am sure you can add many other activities to this list.

See you in September! Remember that cross-country starts right away so if you want to make the team, keep running this

summer.

Skating by Ms. Husband

We are excited to continue with skating this coming winter. We shall once again take all

Grade 3-6 students skating this coming school year.

Students will need to have skates, hockey helmet and

mittens to be allowed on the ice. This summer is a good time to find sales on winter sporting

equipment. You can often find skates at garage sales too. We look forward to offer skating again next year. Have a safe and active summer.

Music Legoland Discovery Centre by Alesha, Grade 2

On Friday, May 30, 2014 the grade 2's from Mr. Baik's class went to Legoland. First, we went to Mini-land. There were famous landmarks from all across Canada. We saw the CN Tower,

Niagara Falls and the airport, all made out of lego! Then we went to the other activities. We went to Merlin's Apprentice, the climbers, the earthquake station, race ramps and a 4-D movie. Last, we went to the workshop. We learned how important it is to make your structures stable. We learned about man-made and natural disasters. Then we tried to build a stable structure.

Legoland by Lorena, Grade 2

On May 30th, 2014, the grade 1's and 2's in Spruce pod went to Legoland. First, Mr. Baik paired us. I was with Eileen. The bus ride was pretty long. When we go there, we went through the lego factory and the Laserquest. We tried to use the laser gun and hit the bad guys. Next, we went to Mini-land to see landmarks of Toronto. Then we got called to watch the 4-D movie. After, we went to the playground. Then we went to Lego Friends where we did karaoke. Next, Mr. Baik told us to go to the workshop. As a group, we built a building. The teacher told us what makes a building strong and told us to try to make the building stronger. Then we went to the bus and went back to school. It was a fun day! The Ontario Association of Optometrists is launching the Children's Vision Program in Toronto.

Free eye exams for JK students and a free pair of eyeglasses, if required (need OHIP) will be given.

Toronto will be included in the list as of July 1.

Healthy Schools 5K Run

by Parents of Samuel M. We were very happy our whole family took part in and finished the Healthy School 5K run/walk held yesterday in Downsview. We met Arbor Glen students Michael and Basil and their parents there. This was a wonderful activity for kids' health, just like the 60 min. kids club.

Arts And Crafts Day by Ms. Joshan

We had a very successful Arts and Crafts afternoon on June 20th. All children from kindergarten to grade 6 participated in this special event. Students had a chance to choose activities from thirteen

different arts and crafts centres. Some of the activities included balloon animals,

pinecone bird feeders, nature cards, decorating binders and styrofoam balls, water bottle penguins, rock art, plasticene animals, etc. The students were provided with a variety of materials and supplies to show their creativity and use their fine motor skills. The recycled materials collected by the school community also came in handy in creating beautiful artwork. Thanks to all the grade 6 students for taking on a leadership role in setting and running the centres. Thanks to the staff and the community members (Ms. Chary, Ms. Cheung, Ms. De Silva, Ms. Evans, Ms. Forsyth and Ms. Husband) for their ideas, time and commitment for this fun afternoon. The caretaking staff (Mr. Marshall and Mr. Speranza) did a marvelous job of restoring the gym back to its pristine condition.

Fire Safety by Ms. Joshan

T

Thanks to Officer Ian Yuill from the Fire Department for doing a presentation on Fire Safety with every class. Through video presentation and interactive sessions, students were made aware of safety precautions to take in preventing fire, and in using safety measures in case of an actual fire. Some of the recommendations include: * check your house or apartment smoke alarm monthly to make sure it is working * change smoke alarm batteries every 6 months * put a smoke alarm on every floor of your house * do not use elevators if the building fire alarm is sounding/ activated * have a fire safety plan with your family (decide where you will meet outside in case of fire) * never leave cooking unattended - if you leave the kitchen, turn off all stove top burners * if fire occurs on stove top, use an oven mitt to place a cooking pot lid on pot or pan and turn the stove off * if oven fire occurs, turn the stove off and leave * never put water on a grease fire

Gold Thanks to the leadership and hard work of Ms. Husband and our Eco Club, we are very proud to announce that we have achieved Gold certification on the recent Eco

Schools audit!

We are very proud of our leaders and all of our students, staff and parents for achieving this most worthwhile goal!!!!

Thank You To Gary Adler, Teacher, Janay Tonnos and Jane Lee, Principal and Vice Principal, Students of Highland Junior High School: On behalf of our entire school, we want to thank you for inviting all of us to participate in your amazing Carnival. Our children loved it!!!! Not only did

they have a wonderful time at the Carnival, but it made them feel even more positive about their future Junior High School. It was a great way to create more bonds between the two schools. We really appreciate all the hard work, time and effort that you put into the Carnival. It was obvious that a great deal of learning went on for the students who planned and operated each of the booths. They were great when dealing with our little ones. Thank you so much for including us in your activities.

Canada Day by Ms. Joshan

On June 23rd, the staff and students of Arbor Glen celebrated Canada’s 147th birthday. The students made Canada flags, wore red and white clothing and walked for a kilometre around the block waving Canadian flags. After the walk, many students gathered together and sang the national anthem, O Canada.
