A Nationwide HolidayWhen Labor Day was first
proposed, organizers suggested astreet parade to exhibit “thestrength and esprit de corps of thetrade and labor organizations”followed by a festival for therecreation and amusement ofworkers and their families.Speeches were later added asgroups placed more emphasison the holiday’s economic andcivic significance. The characterof Labor Day celebrations haschanged over time. But nomatter how you celebrate, it isappropriate to pay tribute onLabor Day to the creators of somuch of our nation’s strength, freedom and leadership—theAmerican worker.

A Salute to ‘Star Trek’On Sept. 8, 1966, the crew
of the starship Enterpriseinvited TV audiences along onits mission “to boldly gowhere no man has gone before.”Fifty years later, “Star Trek”remains a permanent fixture ofpop culture.
Created by GeneRoddenberry, a former WorldWar II fighter pilot-turned-TVwriter and producer, “Star Trek”starred William Shatner as Capt.James T. Kirk, the charismaticleader of the U.S.S. Enterprise;Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock, his half-human, half-Vulcan firstofficer; and DeForest Kelley asthe ship’s physician, Dr. Leonard“Bones” McCoy.
Set in the 23rd century,“Star Trek” used the world ofscience fiction and aliencharacters to offer commentaryon 1960s issues such as civilrights and war. The series wasbeloved by fans for its diversecasting and message of equalityand peace.
“Star Trek” was saved fromcancellation by a massiveletter-writing campaign andlasted three seasons. Later, theseries won new fans insyndication and was revived infilms and TV spinoffs.
