Owen Succeeds withpeaK academics

by Tina Kanelos, Director of Peak Academics

Owen Grossman, an 8th grader at Tesseract, has worked with several Peak Academics tutors for three

years. He has demonstrated incredible personal and academic growth during this time. When we first began working with Owen in 5th grade, he was struggling with the transition into middle school and the challenges of ADHD. Clearly a bright and capable student, his parents and teachers were frustrated by Owen’s disorganization and lack of motivation.

Three years later, Owen says, “I’m happy that my writing has improved. I’m also proud of turning my Spanish grade from my lowest to my highest.”

Along with his sustained effort, Owen attributes his success to his tutors. He spent the summer hard at work with Dr. Beth Carson and Jordana Hale, two of Peak’s amazing tutors. “Jordana helped me to move up to the higher math class

this summer. Beth has really helped me to better understand how to organize my ideas, so I can get them on paper,” reports Owen.

He now feels, “much more confident entering 8th grade.” We, at Peak Academics, are so proud of his accomplishments and look forward to celebrating his future successes. Congratulations, Owen! Z

Q. tell our readers about you as a gymnast.a: I started a tot class at Arizona Sunrays when I was three.  My first leotard covered my pull ups perfectly! The time I spent working on the technique and constant drills often became boring, so I tried Softball for a year.  I soon

discovered that I missed gymnastics and returned. Gymnastics is a sport where often times it’s extremely difficult to return at a competitive level after a long break, but I was determined to prove otherwise. I am so happy today that my strong work ethic and confidence paid off!

Q. do you compete? What level do you compete at?a: Yes, I compete and am currently training to be a Level 10 gymnast. Transitioning from LV 9 to LV 10 is a huge jump and I am working hard to get there.

What is your favorite event?a: The balance beam. This is usually a gymnast least favorite event because the beam is only 4” wide. However, I enjoy the challenge and feel proud of myself when I master a skill that my coach asks me to do. I know if I can compete on a 4” beam, in front of hundreds of people along with four judges are staring at me, I can do anything in life!

Fans who read Sports Illustrated most certainly had to do a double-take while perusing the popular “Faces in the Crowd’’ feature in the

Aug. 4 issue.

That’s because two athletes from the same school –  Xavier College Preparatory – shared the spotlight.

Khalia Lanier and Madison Clarke, take a bow!

Lanier, starting her junior year, is widely considered to be the top volleyball player in Arizona and one of the best in the nation.

The 5-foot-2 Clarke now a senior, has won the last two individual Arizona state tennis championships and is aiming for a third in the spring of 2015. As a team, Xavier has won three in a row.

“It’s pretty cool to have both of us in there at the same time,’’ Lanier said.

Said Clarke: “Somebody said that I might be in Sports Illustrated. I’m like, “What?’ I also didn’t know she (Lanier) would be in there. I was looking down the list and saw “Xavier,’’ and realized that we both were in. It’s still kind of hard to believe. A lot of my friends have said, “I saw you.’ ’’

Lanier helped lead the Arizona Storm to a second straight gold-medal performance at the junior nationals

in Minneapolis.

Clarke recently won the first New Balance high school nationals in Cambridge, Mass., rallying to defeat a California player in two straight sets after dropping the first.

Clarke and Lanier know that their recent national recognition doesn’t come without hard work. That’s a way of life at Xavier.

Q. tell our readers about your involvement as a national merit Scholar.A. I am a National Merit Scholar, a title bestowed upon students who score in the top 1% on the PSAT and are then chosen following completion of an application detailing their academic and extracurricular accomplishments.

Q. Which college will you be attending? What will you be studying?A. I am very fortunate to call Stanford University my home for the next four years. I plan to major in biology with a focus on neurobiology. In addition to science classes, I will also study English and Spanish, two subjects I love. I hope to attend medical school after obtaining my undergraduate degree.

Q. Will you be joining any extra-curricular activities at Stanford?A. I hope to contribute to my college newspaper, engage in community service, and conduct medical research as I have done in the past. I also plan on getting involved in intramural sports and Greek life on campus. Photography intrigues me and I would love to be a tour guide for prospective students through the Stanford admissions office.

Q. tell us about your medal wins at the Junior olympic Games?A. This was my 6th Junior Olympics Games, and my 6th JO Games winning multiple gold medals.  It was also fulfilling to set world records for the 6th year in a row.  I won 11 gold and three silver medals at this year’s games -- four gold in powerlifting, four gold and one silver in the combine, and three gold and two silver in the first-ever JO Games Feats of Strength.

Q. how did you feel about your medal wins? What win made you feel most accomplished?A. Receiving the Joel Ferrell award was the big honor. It normally goes to a senior, and I have watched seniors over the last few years receive this award.

Q. how many hours a week do you spend training for these competitions? What is the hardest parts of being a powerlifter?A. I usually dive three hours a day, five days a week; I also train the powerlifts, plyometric, and sprints three-to-four times a week, 60-90 minutes per workout. I don’t consider myself just a powerlifter – I lift, I dive. and I am training in skeleton, which is a winter Olympic sliding sport.

Q. tell us about your moral courage essay submission?A. I wrote about a lady from Sudan, named Fatima Ibrahim. In my eyes, she is a true inspiration and advocate for the women’s rights. She worked hard, pursued her dream of women’s equality through every harsh word, and even went to jail for her cause.

Q. Where did you get the inspiration to write this essay from?A. I knew when I received the assignment I wanted to write about someone who was a women’s rights activist. I felt like I wanted to pick someone that I could connect with, on a personal level. I considered many individuals to write about, but she stood out when I was researching. She achieved many accolades, like being the first ever women in parliament in her country and even achieving women’s suffrage there too.

Q. What is the one thing you will miss most about madison?A. I will really miss the whole support system at Madison. I mean, the teachers are some of the most caring, devoted people I’ve ever met. They really push all their students to do their best, and I’m really going to miss them.

Q. how did you spend your summer break?A. At the beginning of my summer break I had the amazing opportunity to attend a Roots Music Camp at Berklee School of Music in Boston, MA. This camp gave me the opportunity to work with amazingly talented musicians from around the world including a mandolinist named Joe

Walsh, violinist Matt Glaser, songwriter Mark Simos, violinist Darol Anger, and many more. Another amazing part of the camp was a clinic with Art Garfunkel from Simon and Garfunkel. He invited the eleven of us from the camp to a question and answer session as well as a sound check prior to a concert he gave at the Berklee auditorium. The whole thing was cosmic.

Q. What are your hobbies and interests?A. I play guitar, mandolin, bass, piano, drums, saxophone, bassoon, pedal steel guitar, dulcimer, and anything else I can get my hands on instrument wise. Writing, arranging, and performing music are my passions. This year Horizon’s Symphonic Band will play the overture from Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana,” a piece that I arranged specifically for the band.

Q. tell our readers your involvement with your school theatre program.A. I am the stage manager for Madison Prep Theater. This year will be my fourth year as the stage manger, but I have been involved with every show since my seventh grade year.

Q. What responsibilities do you have in theatre?A. As a stage manager for a small school theater my responsibilities are numerous. My main job during a show is to make sure that our blacks out scene changes, or shifts, happen flawlessly. Before and after each show I am responsible for resetting the stage set and props for the next run.

Q. What has been your most favorite play to be apart of? how did you participate in this play?A. While I am the stage manger; however, I have also had the opportunity to act in some of the shows as well. My favorite show to be in the cast for was Ragtime, where I played Sarah’s Friend and got to dance to some great Ragtime music from Harlem in the early 1900’s. As a stage manger my favorite show was Les Miserables. It was my first show as a stage manager my freshmen year and the hardest show I’ve ever done.

Danny was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age, and four years ago, he was also diagnosed with borderline Asperger’s.

Danny would sit in the back row of a traditional class, and he wasn’t moving forward on any of his assignments. His teachers expressed frustration because he wasn’t able to sit and focus on work.

Danny’s mother, Nell, said Danny was getting bullied to the point where he didn’t want to go to school. She nearly had to drag him out of the car to go to class. At that point, she realized something needed to change.

Nell thought she would either homeschool Danny or enroll him in charter school until she came upon Brightmont Academy, a school that specializes in one-to-one instruction for each student throughout every learning session. It seemed like a good fit for Danny.

Now Danny is starting his third year at Brightmont Academy, and it has made all the difference for Danny and his family. According to his mother, there are no longer any conflicts about homework and the new school has brought more unity to the home and made Danny a happier child.

First sta student council PRESIDENT TIE IN 10 YEARS

John Robaina:How did you feel to be elected co-president with Katie?I was really happy and excited. Katie is great and I am really looking forward to it.

What are some things that you would like to implement at school?I would like to implement extra lunchtime activities and special days, and work with the students with things they would like to see happen.

When not in school what do you like to do?When I am not in school, I like to play football, play the guitar, and hang out with my friends. I also really like to read in my free time.

What is the best thing about STA?That’s pretty hard, I really like STA. I love how much fun I get to have with my friends. I enjoy the chance to try to be a good role model for the younger kids. I love the teachers and the curriculum and I love the sense of community.

Tell us about one of your teachers. What makes him/her a great teacher?Ms. Janice Junker is a really cool teacher. She has an interesting and funny way of teaching us and the lessons really stick. It is hard to forget information that she gives us.

Katie holmes:What are some of the responsibilities you will have as Co-President?We will be in charge of running the Student Council meetings, planning fun dances along with the other officers, helping plan Spirit Weeks for school events, participating in pizza sales that take place once a month and helping sell raffle tickets for holiday baskets. We will also speak at our Graduation as well as at different school events.

What are some things that you would like to implement at school?I would like to have the STA Student Council have our own volunteer project that we can choose together as a group. It can be something like serving at St. Vincent de Paul or collecting food for St. Mary’s Food Bank.

When not in school what do you like to do?I’ve been on competitive cheerleading and gymnastics teams for the past few years.  I’m also a part of National Charity League which is an organization that serves our community. I really like to serve at places such as St. Vincent de Paul and Free Arts for Abused Children. I also like to go on fun trips with my family during the summer.

How long have you been attending STA?I’ve been attending STA since kindergarten. My family has been going to STA for the past 10 years.

What is the best thing about STA?The best thing about STA is our close community and all of the great teachers because they’re providing us with an outstanding education! I also really like our principal Mrs. Coffman and our vice principal Mrs. Zeches. I’ve met so many great friends at STA throughout the years.

Tell us about one of your teachers. What makes him/her a great teacher?Ms. Janice Junker was my Language Arts teacher last year and will be again this year.  She is a great teacher because she pushes us to be our very best and has taught us how to write papers, take good notes and do thorough research. I look forward to having her next year because I know she’ll prepare me for high school! Z

I enjoy the chance to try to be a good role model for the

younger kids. I love the teachers and the curriculum and I love

the sense of community.

John and Katie are both in the 8th grade at Saint thomas the apostle School

I would like to have the STA Student

Council have our own volunteer project

that we can choose together as a group.

New SCHOOl yeAr SIgNAlS OPPOrTuNITy TO TAKe ACTION, INSPIre CHANge

T he start of school is a time of countless firsts, including new classes, new faces and new experiences.

Just as students are eager for the first day, schools around the Valley also look forward to the new year. It’s not only a chance to welcome students back for yet another year of learning, but it’s a valuable opportunity to inspire learners to think about their future careers and the difference they can make on the lives of those around them.

This year, Grand Canyon University will welcome a record number of students, roughly 11,000, nearly half of whom are incoming freshmen and transfer students. As part of their official welcome, we will encourage them to find their purpose in life by harnessing their passions.

After all, purpose is built on passion. And while students have plenty of pas-sion, they often seek direction. Whether a student dreams of becoming a nurse or entrepreneur, it’s the educator’s job to help them get there.

Take, for example, the exhilarating world of digital gaming. It’s no secret that there are a limited number of jobs in game development. Yet, there are limitless opportunities in education and health care where delivering complex concepts through interactive apps is in high demand. Recognizing the market demand, GCU created a whole program in our College of Science, Engineering and Technology where students will be able to put that passion to use in the work-place, creating games and simulations that can teach students how to navigate high-risk situations or show medical professionals how to help cancer patients and their families through trying times.

This is just one example of how to turn a passion into a meaningful career that helps the greater good. Students can find more direction in turning their pas-sion into a career by:

1 SeeKINg INPuT from teachers and counselors. These professionals can help steer students toward a lucrative career path and plan their high school elective courses to get a taste of what they’ll need to learn in order to enter a

certain field.

2 PlACINg A CAll to a local college’s career services department. At GCU, we welcome inquiries by middle- and high-school students. In fact, we have many resources students can use to determine a career path,

including our Career Compass and Career Hub.

3 ATTeNDINg CAreer fAIrS. These aren’t just for job seekers. Booths are often staffed by recruiters who can offer an in-depth perspective on jobs. They can also be great additions to a network, especially as students

look for internships and summer employment.

4 NeTwOrKINg. Those who love the idea of working in a helping profession such as teaching or nursing can connect with adults with similar interests on professional networking sites such as LinkedIn. Here,

students can learn about careers that give them the chance to live their passion.

5 SeCurINg PArT-TIMe Or SuMMer wOrK. It’s never too late for students to start planning for a part-time or summer job in their chosen industry. They can leverage job fair contacts, network connections and

employment boards as a way to get a taste of a future career.

A career founded in passion leads to success. After all, college is not just about earning a degree or spending a moment in an experience. Z

new app RipilSPREADS KINDNESS

We live in a world where everyday good deeds can be hard to recognize and

reward. People do things for others and never receive credit. Thanks to a new app, Ripil, kindness can be tracked and even turned into a game. The app focuses on specific deeds that you can receive once logged into the program. The deeds give you ideas on how to make people smile and spread your own kindness with the community. Or you can compete in a kindness competition, which you can play with different groups of people, and see who can complete certain kindness deeds first. On the app, you can increase your own score by logging in and routinely completing deeds. If you complete a numerous amount of deeds, you could be listed as one of the nicest people in your city. If you travel to different cities or even countries, you can see who the kindest people are and even connect with them. This app has no age limitations; everyone can participate. Ripil is now available for free on iTunes and can be accessed on most cell phones. By using this app, kindness can become an even bigger part of our everyday lives and in technologically savvy way. Even if you aren’t a massive user of the app, having it on your phone will give a constant reminder about the importance of kindness, which can change how we interact with each other and the world. I personally think this app is revolutionary and is a great example of how technology can bring people together to create better spaces for everyone. Z

app descRiption:ripil is a free app that lets you connect with people on a human level, express your kindness toward the world around you, and allows you to keep track of the continued good that happens after your deed is accomplished.

earn badges and increase your kindness score by logging everyday deeds, recruiting new people to ripil, and by getting your deeds passed on. The interactive ripil map will allow you to follow the next step in your deeds journey.

your deed could be passed on to a friend, someone you’ve never met, maybe even a popular celebrity or athlete, even the President of the united States. who knows, your “ripil” could lead to a world change.

Become the kindest person in your city via the ripil leaderboard that keeps track of the Top 10 kindest people in the Top 10 kindest cities around the world.

Compete in “head to head” kindness challenges with your friends, have your city go up against another city to see who is kinder, or have a local school challenge another school to see who’s students can hit a certain amount of deeds first. Companies small and large can compete with each other as well as we find out who the kindest companies in the world are.

ripil can be your own personal kindness journal or a way to share more kindness throughout the world.

Food rules! comes to a School Near You

Food Rules! is a program Nutrition ONE facilitates to bring awareness to the foods we eat. We are trained chefs running our food service and

catering for 14 years.

Our program Food Rules! comes to your school once a month with taste teasers and fun facts about the nutrients in the sample we provide. An example of some of the ingredients used last year was mashed cauliflower, edamame, and kale salad.  When we are able to challenge the children to sample something new they receive some fun facts about what they experienced and a token for their bravery.

Food Rules! Bracelets are a common reward and of course the power of knowledge. We make it interactive for everyone.

Nutrition ONE strives to create menus that are Fresh, Whole Foods. We believe its important to for them to know how gigantic the seed is in a nectarine or perhaps plums and carrots can be many colors. We want them to see the meals as if the were picked from a tree or a vine.  Nutrition ONE uses interactive software and on line ordering for families to easily order the child’s meal for up to eight weeks in advance or just 1 week if they prefer.  We build it to suit each individual family.

We offer a Complete Salad option daily as well as HOT meals and AL A Carte items. We proudly participate in the NSLP program and are an approved vendor of Arizona Dept of education. Z
