If you care enough you just do it. You bind the goods and trappings of your life together with your dreams to make a place that is uniquely your own. In doing so you build a semblance of the world you know, adding it to the community that surrounds you.’ Their work develops our experience with 19 th ‐century pattern books and the opportunities they created to empower ordinary people in a meaningful design dialogue—‘not at all to minimize the importance of expertise, only to discredit its mysteries.’ The authors describe in simple and eloquent terms how fine homes and liveable environments are created. Your first formal course exercise challenges you to tell us about you and your own spaces of home. The task Describe the place that you call home (which is not necessarily where you now reside). Work from memory, using hand‐ drawing types that allow you to express different ideas about the place. Present your work on a single A1 (594x891mm) panel combining conventional objective architectural drawings—plans, sections, elevations, isometrics—with more subjective strategies (perspective views, parti diagrams, conceptual sketches, analogical/metaphorical drawings). Your drawings should address large and small subjects in your attempt to express the special nature and qualities of the space. Play with scale; zoom in and out. Consider using serial drawings (see excerpts from Townscape and The Concise Townscape by Gordon Cullen posted at http://www.arch.mcgill.ca/prof/luka/urbandesignhousing/U2/ ): drawings that are connected thematically with consecutive images sharing information such as a piece of carpet or wallpaper pattern, a shadow on the wall, a fragment of furniture, a glimpse of a stair, a book on a side table. Drawings like this can be connected as a series of overlapping views from a single vantage point, or they might be connected in relation to a particular way of knowing the place (e.g., a temporal movement through its spaces, a sense of orientation in more abstract terms). Imagine yourself in a café working on the back of a paper placemat while you tell a friend about a new flat that you’ve rented. Context is vital: the city, the neighbourhood, the urban block, the streetscape, other qualities of the landscape and microclimate (including moods and atmospheres), culture, history, symbols, archetypes… what else? How can one express ideas about the sensory qualities of space beyond the visual (sound, smell, materiality)? What are the qualities and characteristics that make the place so memorable? Objectives 1. Reflection on the powers of drawing in conjunction with the nature of experience 2. Consideration of the meanings and programme of ‘home’
