Architects visit Hampton Lucy Church The West Midlands Architects’ Conservation
Group visited St Peter’s Church on 27 July to view
the latest stage of the restoration programme. The
group included architects with a particular interest
in this type of work, including Andrew Brooks,
who set up the current restoration phases, and Nick
Reading, secretary of WMACG and English
Heritage Consulting Architect for the project.
Graham Barclay welcomed all the visitors and
refreshments were provided. They then split into
groups and were escorted up the scaffolding by
Stephen Oliver, the Church Architect, to view the
work in progress. Stuart Gartshore and his fellow
stone-masons from Croft Building & Conservation
Ltd demonstrated their highly skilled work which
includes the preparation and placement of
beautifully carved stonework, including gargoyles
and finials to the original designs of Sir George
Gilbert Scott. Nick Reading gave a short history of
the church and the Victorian architects, Rickman
and Hutchinson, who achieved national acclaim for their work on 19th century church buildings. Hutchinson's grave is in the
churchyard with a memorial tablet in the vestry. The visitors also explored the complex under-croft. Everyone agreed that it
was an interesting and informative afternoon and WMACG will be making a donation to the church restoration fund. English
Heritage, The National Churches Trust, The Council for the Care of Churches and The Garfield Weston Foundation have all
contributed generously, plus many fund-raising events organised within the parish. Thanks to good management and fine
weather the work is on schedule and should be completed by the end of October. PJR
Loxley School End of Term Report Loxley School enjoyed a hectic end to the year. It began with
Sports Day, planned by the Year Six pupils, with many parents
and friends enjoying the sunshine and cheering on the children.
Later in the week the Friends of Loxley School hosted a
Leavers’ Disco and Barbeque, a new school event; fun for the
children and a social evening for parents, staff and invited guests
who had helped the Friends committee during the year. I am
sure this will now be an annual event! On the last day of term a
very special service took place at Loxley Church when we
joined Year Six to celebrate their departure from Primary
School. The leavers shared memories of their time at the school
and fellow pupils read out very personal messages of good luck
to their friends. The whole school then performed the story of
Noah's Ark, as chosen by the Year Six pupils. It was a service
full of joy and laughter, plus a few tears! Those that were
leaving then enjoyed a limousine trip into Stratford. We wish
them all “Good Luck”. HCC

Sue Maindonald, licensee of The Boar’s Head, Hampton

What does it mean to be a Christian? - An Opportunity for Discussion
Despite some predictions about religion dying out, it still seems to be very important to many people in this 21st century. Yet
there are differing views within, as well as between, different religions and it isn’t always easy to know how or where to find
out more. Starting in October we are going to set up some opportunities for people to think about how being a Christian
affects people’s lives. We shall follow the Christian Nurture part of a course called ‘Emmaus’. There will be 6 sessions in
October and November and the course will resume in February for some more sessions. They will all be on Tuesday
evenings, starting on 5 October, but we hope to have a get-together of all who are interested during the week before. It will
take place at a suitable location within our group of six parishes. We plan to start at 7.30 pm with light refreshments. If you
are at all interested and want to know more please contact Rev’d David Jessett (01926 624238, [email protected]) or

Cathedral News Coventry Cathedral is one of the world's oldest religious-based centres for reconciliation. Following the destruction of the
Cathedral in 1940, a commitment was made not to seek revenge, but forgiveness and reconciliation with those responsible.
The vision was to “build a kinder, more Christ-like world.” One of the ways the cathedral tried to work towards this was by
establishing the Community of the Cross of Nails which today is an international network of over 150 organisations in 60
countries committed to working towards peace and reconciliation. This work covers some of the world's most difficult and
long-standing areas of conflict. The Cathedral’s work of reconciliation continues to grow. Canon David Porter, the Director
for Reconciliation Ministry, recently outlined new developments including establishing Coventry Cathedral as a place of
Pilgrimage, using one of the Coventry Diocese buildings, St Michael’s House, to set up a Centre for Leadership and
Development for those working in the field of reconciliation, and to raise awareness of the Community of the Cross of Nails.
Another new dimension will be the creation of a network of International Cross of Nails Schools. There are only five
schools in the world at the moment that have this status. Each one has a connection with Coventry Cathedral and their local
church. And at the heart of their ethos is the Coventry vision. Rev’d CD and AB

whole geography of the land was changed.” As I write, 1,600
people have lost their lives and 14 million people have been
affected. “…..We have nothing to eat. We have left our livestock.
Villagers could only save their families. After we have saved our
children, we sit here on the road. We have been sitting here for the
last two days.” And they wait for aid. The image is strikingly
similar to one in the Bible. That image is in the story of the Good
Samaritan who stops to help someone of a different nationality, a
total stranger, who is in dire circumstances on the side of the road.
Jesus told the story in response to a question from someone who
knew they should love their neighbour but didn’t know who their
neighbour was. The reply points to our ‘neighbour’ meaning much
more than just the person next door. Often it is the last person we’d
expect and especially those who are in dire straits. The situation in
Pakistan will need our love as neighbours; prayers, generosity, and
practical love on a vast scale for some time to come.
With love and blessings,

Dear Friends,
Early in August, we were staying in Brecon with the family. I was
clearing up in the kitchen with my mother-in-law and our
thoughts drifted back to the news reports from Pakistan the night
before. I just hadn’t been able to take in the images. The scale of
the flooding and human suffering was mind-boggling. My mother
-in-law felt the same and, as she tried to make sense of it,
memories of flooding in Brecon returned. Heavy rain runs off the
Brecon Beacons and pours into the River Usk. Some years the
rain is so heavy that the river bursts its banks and inundates part
of the town. One year stood out in particular and has become
family folklore. Water reached as far as the ground floor ceilings
and, when it subsided, our family helped to clear up the contents
of a friend’s silt-filled house. That was bad enough, but those
floods were microscopic in comparison to the ones in Pakistan.
What on earth can it be like for the people there? The mountains
in the north of Pakistan are 7-8,000 feet high. Rainwater
“thundered down them...washing away everything on the valley
floors,” as one news reporter put it, “..and in the process, the

September at Charlecote Park Antiques of all kinds can be brought to Charlecote Park on
Thursday, 16 September, for the BBC Antiques
Roadshow. Bring your treasures with you, but, if the items
are too large to carry, contact the BBC at Bristol, BS8 2LR,
email [email protected] or you can check the
BBC website. Admission will be free. There will also be free
entry to The Park for the Heritage Open Day on Saturday, 11
September. At this time of the season the deer become less
shy and are more likely to be seen close to the main areas of
the Park. Look out for the dates of the Deer Park Safaris in
October (charges apply). The long-awaited repairs to the
gatehouse are due to start on 20 September, and it is hoped
that small groups will be allowed onto the gatehouse roof
during this time, a unique opportunity to get a different view
of the park and the surrounding countryside. Sunday, 19
September, marks another visit of the falcons from JRCS
Falconry. There will be a ‘Walk with the Gardener’ at 2pm
on Saturday, 25 September. Normal entry charges apply to
these events. For further details of opening, events, etc please

Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI Our July meeting turned out to be truly
inspirational! James Butler’s talk on his
sculptures was magnificent and during the evening he
extended an invitation to everyone to visit his gallery in
Radway. Many of us took up the offer and were enthralled
by his beautiful and skilful work (and, when we win the
lottery….!) There was no meeting in August but on
Wednesday, 1 September, at 7.30pm we shall meet in
Hampton Lucy when the speaker will be Maggie Millings
with a talk entitled “Tales from the Dressing Room”. The
‘Quilt for Valour’, hand-made by our group, is complete
and resplendent in red, cream and blue. It is now with the
quilter and awaiting despatch to wounded servicemen in
hospital in this country. MJW
Shipston Home Nursing Shipston Home Nursing supports all of the villages surrounding Shipston, Wellesbourne and Kineton. Since
the charity started thirteen years ago we have nursed between thirty and forty people a year, from as young as
17 to 90 years of age. There are eleven members of the Board of Trustees. Janet Oakey, the Nurse Manager,
has a wonderful team of dedicated nurses who are highly trained in palliative care and do a remarkable job.
Fund-raising continues throughout the year with all manner of events from country car-boot sales, plant sales, gift fairs, and
sponsored walks, runs and bike rides, to discos, operas, balls and much more. The events are designed to encourage as many
local people as possible to participate and we always welcome new ideas. The charity needs to raise £150,000 per annum and
Shipston Home Nursing is fortunate to receive tremendous support from the local community, for which we are enormously
grateful. In addition to the events that we run ourselves, many local groups and individuals arrange their own events and
generously pass the proceeds on to Shipston Home Nursing. “Thank you” to everyone for your continuing help. RM
The Pageant - 2010 The Story of Christ’s Nativity, presented in mime and music,
will be performed by the parishioners of our six parishes at St
Peter’s Church, Barford, this Christmas. The pageant,
involving over a hundred adults and a smaller group of
children, has been performed every five years since the early
1950s and has become a local tradition. If you are interested
in taking an active part in this production, be it acting, singing
or backstage, you are invited to a meeting at Barford church
on Sunday, 3 October, at 11:00am. This will just be a short
meeting to gather information on the numbers of people
available. Details from Michael Ashton on 01926 624027. MA
Rogue Traders ! Summer is a particularly busy time for rogue traders and Trading Standards, together with the police, have been cracking
down with special intelligence-led operations. Rogue traders use all types of tricks and intimidation to get householders to
pay high prices for poor workmanship or, in some cases, no work at all. Here are some of their tricks:
Pretending to be from the local council and offering to tarmac your driveway using materials that are "left over".
Claiming to be also working on a neighbour's property in order to give you a false sense of security. Inventing
problems which don't exist in hard-to-see places such as the roof. Using false names, documents and addresses with
untraceable mobile phone numbers. Offering to start work immediately to prevent you from changing your mind.
Never agree to work being done by cold callers who knock on your door, and don’t be rushed into making a decision. You
are legally entitled to take time to consider, so always seek recommendations from trustworthy local traders. To report a
suspected rogue trader, contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506. WTSS
Free Electric Blanket Safety Tests Warwickshire Trading Standards Service will provide
FREE electric blanket safety tests between 4 and 8 October
for people aged fifty or over. Testing, by appointment only,
will take place at the following venues: Tuesday, 5 October
in Leamington Town Hall; Thursday, 7 October, in
Kenilworth Library, and Friday, 8 October, at The Stratford-
upon-Avon United Reform Church. Faulty electric blankets
cause a number of fires each year, which can result in injury
or death. Don’t miss this opportunity. Call Trading
Standards Service on 01926 736477 for an appointment.

The Loxley Strawberry Fayre
Being blessed with a sunny summer day on 10 July, Loxley
held a very successful Strawberry Fayre. Once again the
gardens of Loxley Hall made a beautiful setting, thanks to
the hospitality of Peter Gregory-Hood. People from near
and far flooded in and enjoyed the stalls and entertainment,
as well as a delicious tea provided by the village ladies who
had baked cakes, prepared sandwiches and hulled 75lbs
strawberries for over 300 people! The villagers are
delighted to have raised almost £2,500 for church funds. LL
Hampton Lucy Parish Council At the Parish Council meeting on June 23 the major subjects
discussed were aircraft noise over the village, the proposed
purchase of a gritting bin for the pavement on Snitterfield Street
and the condition and maintenance of the equipment in the
playing field. Action was deferred until the next meeting when
further information should be available. The chairman referred to
a County Council requirement for a social housing needs survey.
It was agreed that the views of residents should be sought. The
next meeting will be on Wednesday, 8 September, at 7.30pm in
the village hall when all residents are invited to attend. A copy of
the Parish Council minutes, sent by e-mail, can be requested by
contacting the Parish Clerk. on [email protected] BM
