This group project created a design for a vacant lot, currently under zone code Public Business, next to Frederick Municipal Airport in the East Frederick neighborhood. Through a series of GIS analyses, we concluded that the riverfront-airport area used to be for agriculture land use, but lacked urban fabric to connect to the existing Frederick downtown area. The design proposed fully utilizes the agricultural tradition and bene ts of close proximity to major transit infrastructure. We created a new kind of urban space by working with greenhouse modules, water channels, rain gardens and community gardens. The anchor industry and food-related sites ultimately will be transformed to be a gourmet food market: an innovative new attraction of East Frederick.

  • CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGERENAISSANCE SYMPHONY MUSIC HALLLocation: general US city contextProf. Steven Hurtt

  • 9This individual design project is an exploration of classical architectural language and its infl uences on the quality of public spaces and architectural experience from outside to inside. The building is a combination of civic center and chamber music hall that ts in a trapezoidal site along a diagonal primary street with gridiron neighborhood streets. The faade and architectural elements are designed to echo classical Renaissance and Baroque architecture using a Corinthian column order. The core of this design project is to craft the grand promenade sequence; that is, primary faade-lobby-auditorium.

Ellicott City in Maryland is a historic mill town with dynamic topography. The juxtaposition of new development in the West Gate area and the vernacular of old town blur the middle landscape. Topographical challenges also lead to environmental concerns, making the area less likely to be formally urbanized. The proposed arboretum acts as a knot that weaves two different urban fabrics together while maintaining its character. In addition to being a public place for the residents, the arboretum acts as a sponge to help mitigate runoff and flash floods. The arboretum boundary is designed carefully to align with the critical steep slope and seasonal water channels. Ultimately, the arboretum acts as a canopy to nurse the preserved forest coverage, stabilize the fragile landscape, and create a series of small public spaces connecting the old and new urban fabric of the town.

    COLLAGE

    ENRICH

The urban design practice is based on Colin Rowes Collage City theory, where two kinds of urban design principles from diff erent periods of time can interact and create a juxtaposition of urban fabric. Here the patched area was redesigned based on Renaissance urban design principles, that is, a primary street with a uniformed street faade connecting two-end public spaces together as the Gestalt of the city.

  • UNDERGRADUATE | LILLE GALLERY Study Abroad Project, Spring 2012, Copenhagen, DK

Lille Gallery is an architecture in- ll project sitting in the heart of Central Copenhagen, along the street of Lille Kannikestrde between a historical bar and corner store. The gallery is showing two of Vilheim Hammashois paintings, the sculpture Flamming Srensons Brudt Kugle, and the illumination art work, Room of One color by Olafur Eliasson. Each gallery space and stairwell is designed to give the user a diff erent experience and uses a diff erent mood to present the art work accordingly. My design process largely focused on geometry composition and transition between each space sequence. The nal design of the place achieved the drama of the gallery in the tiny 10x13m2 (1400 sq ft) site yet maintained the harmony with existing buildings.

UNDERGRADUATE | ART OF DAYLIGHTINGFall 2012, UMN project Team Project: Boyu Li, Jianing Song

This is a daylighting case study exercise. We as a team chose The chapel of St. Lawrence, which was designed by Finnish rm Avanto Architects, located in Vantaa, Finland. The 60 degree latitude and Eurasia N continents coastal zone give the building a unique site context and material restriction. The nature of illumination of the earth creates divergent summer and winter daylighting experiences, from sunrise to sunset.

As a consequence of the mental transfer from the actually of the drawing or the model to the material reality of the project, the images with which the designer advances are not mere visual renderings; they constitute a fully haptic and multi-sensory reality of imagination.- The Thinking Hand by Juhani Pallasmaa
