Cardboard Ronald Reagan Unlike Carter President Ronald Reagan projected a strong image His own Iranian hostage situation exploded in scandal and his attempts to establish a presence in Lebanon cost the lives of 241 Marines Among the Reagan administration domestic scandals was one involving the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which led to the indictment of one EPA official and the forced resignation of another Herb Block notes The agency was one of many stacked to fit Reagan policies Corruption in the Housing and Urban Development Agency took the form of awarding agency money to developers who would make campaign contributions But it was the Iran-Contra scandals that shook the country and his administration Through all this Reagan remained popular and his image was upheld

President John F Kennedy
asked Johnson to head up the satellite program because he understood its importance to future telecommunications
Vice President Johnson Was Assigned the Task of Unifying the US Satellite Programs June 24 1961 If you look up into the sky on a clear night you might see among the sparkling stars and planets an object that is moving slowly across the dark sky That little light is no star its a satellite orbiting the earth There are many out there thanks in part to the efforts of John F Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson
On June 24 1961 the public learned of President Kennedys letter assigning Vice President Johnson the high-priority task of unifying the United States satellite programs After the Soviet Union launched Sputnik the worlds first artificial satellite in 1957 the US space program skyrocketed But the program was plagued with rivalries between competing government agencies and expanding costs It needed strong leadership

Fidel Castro (19267- ) gained an early audience for his opinions on the Cuban government beginning in 1950 after graduating from the University of Havana He quickly gained power and support by speaking to fellow Cubans about his dissatisfaction with the political dictatorship in Cuba and was a key leader in organizing the rebel force known as The 26th of July revolutionary movement Through this following composed largely of city dwellers and exiles Castro gained sufficient support to overthrow the Cuban government in 1959 He was proclaimed premier in 1959 and from that point on worked to transform Cuba into the first communist state in the western hemisphere He rules the nation t
Nixon unindicted co-conspirator By July 14 1974 President Richard Nixon stood almost alone His vice-president Spiro Agnew pleaded nolo contendere to a charge of tax evasion and was forced to resign Many of Nixons closest aides had been convicted of illegal activities Nixon himself was named an un-indicted co-conspirator by the Watergate grand jury A few days later the House Judiciary Committee recommended impeachment and the Supreme Court required him to turn over all subpoenaed tapes When even his closest friends reviewing these tapes agreed that the evidence against him was overwhelming Nixon bowed to the inevitable resigning on August 9

Modern Era (1946 - present)
