Itinerary Monday 26 May: Departed Lae for Port Moresby at 10:00am on PX 103. Visited & conducted farmer evaluation for the preparation of cycle two at Yule Island on 27/05/2014 and continued to Hisiu village on the 28th – 29th of April 2014. Major event 1. Met with Joe, John and Ikupu and identify and confirm selected model farmers for Yule Island and Hisiu sites. The first major activity at the workshop in Yule was the selection of interested farmers, all the selected model farmers were interested and would like to take up village chicken farming. While the selected farmers in Hisiu were interested in village chicken, duck, goat and fish/duck integration. The selection of the interested farmers from both sides were done by their leaders/chiefs/elders with consultation from their community

2. The evaluation workshop in Yule Island was attended by 15 participants, of which 6 were second lot of selected model farmers and 4 were current model farmers and 5 were chiefs and community leaders and interested community members. From the 15 participants, 5 were female participants and 10 were male participants.

3. The evaluation workshop in Hisiu was attended by 56 participants, of which 38 were second lot of selected model farmers and 4 were current model farmers and 14 were chiefs and ward development officers and interested community members. From the 56 participants, 17 were female participants and 39 were male participants (see Annex 1).

4. The second major activity was the interested farmer’s on-site assessment, two important assessments were carried out; one on farm unit setup, in which materials to be use in the farm unit setup was identified and farm unit

set design and layout was explained and demonstrated to the farmers. The other assessment was carried out to identify the interested farmers training needs. Generally from the assessment, most of the selected farmers do not have basic skills in livestock husbandry; especially the livestock that will be will be distributed, so the training will be focused on the basics of livestock husbandry and its demonstration on-site.

5. Key issues discussed at workshop; Project objectives were clearly mentioned and discussed with

interested and model farmers Project importance and benefits to the community and its

sustainability in terms of food security were also discussed Livestock distribution to model farmers and repayment or

credit to next round of model farmers were also discussed Interested farmer selection processes and who is responsible

for the selection were also discussed Participation of women and youths in the project was highly

encouraged Project planned activities implementing dates were discussed

and finalised with the leaders and farmers in consultation with their own schedule.

6. Socio Economic cadet Shirley Drew was taken through the project activities and assessment as part of her training exposure under the project

7. Eleo and Shirley will provide independent assessment on the model farmers’ progress.

Follow up 1. Simon to conduct on-site assessment for 30 plus interested farmers in both Yule and Hisiu. (Action: Simon)

2. Simon to distribute livestock to model farmers who did not receive their stock (16-18th June). (Action: Simon)

3. Identified farmers selected by Yule and Hisiu leaders and confirmed. Training will be conducted on the second week of July for the 3rd group of farmers.(Action: Simon and Maima)

Comments 1. Delivery of stock to model farmers was not done and farmers were still waiting, issues to this delay was discussed and identified and date were set for the stock distribution

out and community leaders/chiefs/elders will be directly involved in farmer selection

3. Farmers selected for the project were mostly from the same clan and other clans are missing out, this happens in both Yule and Hisiu. Leaders were encouraged to select genuine farmers and farmers from different clans and tribes.
