Monday, June 10th was a big day for ARFhouse. That was the date of our 2nd Annual Golf Tournament held at Tanglewood Golf Club in Pottsboro. It was a great day indeed. The golf tournament is our biggest fundraiser of the year. The day was a huge success for the dogs of ARFhouse. Eighty-two golfers participated this year, and, as you might see from the photos, a good time was had by all. A couple of our golfers brought their favorite sidekicks along. Tommy Ellis brought “Madi”, the Black Lab. “Madi” regularly accompanies Tommy to the course. Maury Beatty brought “Omen”. “Omen” regularly rides shotgun with Maury. “Jazz”, our ARFhouse dog-ambassador, came to greet our guests. Of course, she brought Martha and Sammie along with her for the day. Lunch and breakfast were provided and, of course, there was water, beer, and Danny Wilson’s famous Margaritas to round out the day. That was a real highlight for all the golfers and volunteers alike - great fun to be sure. Tanglewood is a dog-friendly course which makes it very special to all of us at ARFhouse. We have so many people to thank for this successful day. Mike Fish, head golf professional, and his team did a fantastic job this year setting up our tournament. The entire staff worked hard to make this a great day. Emily Taylor, a Pro Shop staffer, even spent her afternoon off on Sunday helping us to get set up for the Monday morning tournament. We had a record-setting 38 sponsors this year at levels

from $150 to $2500. A very special thank you to all our sponsors. You really made the profits soar this year. We could not have done this without you. We also had a profitable silent auction and raffle. We had many great items and some spirited competition for the “goods”. Thanks to our many generous donors for providing all the merchandise. Trophies were presented to the 3 lowest-scoring teams, as well as to the longest drive and closest to the pin for both men and women. Tournament play was friendly, but competitive this year due to the addition of a calculated team handicap, and by all accounts, every golfer had a great time. Everyone was there to benefit the dogs and we appreciate the generosity of all competitors in participating in every aspect of the tournament from Mulligan purchase to auction bids, raffle ticket purchase and other generous donations.

Our 12 official volunteers were assisted by several others who came to enjoy the day. We absolutely could not have done this without our volunteers. We were fortunate to have professional DFW photographer, Jenna Regan, capture the day this year. You can view the entire photo gallery by visiting Jenna’s website at the following address:

Successful “Barn” Sale! The sale to benefit the dogs was held in June and the proceeds almost doubled from last year. Our dear friend and supporter, SHEDERA FARMER, with cooperation and help from her husband, CLARENCE (who once again allowed her to hold this event in his “barn”. No one would refer to this spacious and pristine building as a “barn” except Clarence.)
The following ladies helped in setting up all the items and manning the tables: SYLVIA HIX, MARY JOHNSON, BONNIE GRIFFIN, DIANA HAFNER, ANNA RUTHERFORD, and BONNIE SHELTON. Thanks go out to all these dog lovers who gave of their time and efforts to make this event a success for the animals.

The heat hasn’t slowed us down! We’ve saved a lot of dogs this quarter. Taking in dogs requires a lot of behind-the-scenes work; keeping up with who’s who? Who needs what? Not to mention the never-ending stack of records. Our busy quarter means you will be seeing new faces at our adoption events. I am pleased with the response to our Be a Pal sponsorship program, but we need more! Our goal is to reach 1,000 “Pals”. You can learn more about our Be a Pal program on page 5.
Thank You!The Oliver Dewey Mayor Foundation made a grant for $6,850.00 to pay for a portion of the outdoor kennels at our new “Margie & John McCain Senior Center”, where 21 dogs now reside in air-conditioned comfort. This foundation has made several grants to our organization over the years, and we are so grateful for their support.

Yes, we had plenty! But space was limited, so there will be plenty to see in the December newsletter. Don’t despair. We’re still rescuing the homeless.
“What I’ve Been up To”by: Jenna Glover

A DELAYWe had planned to have an “open house” for our local friends to see the new “Senior Center”, but the outdoor kennels have taken a bit more time than we anticipated. And we’ve added a shade canopy on each side, which has added to materials and time. As a result, we’ve pushed the “grand opening” as well as acknowledgments to all who participated and built this wonderful facility to our winter newsletter in early December. Rest assured there are already 20 dogs enjoying this great facility. Stay tuned......
AppealOne of the major components of our aging infrastructure is failing us. Our underground water lines. We have two water wells that have served us well and continue to provide necessary water to all the dog yards. But the 20 and 25 year old PVC pipe that carries the water is beginning to crack and must be excavated and repaired on a regular basis. The price to replace is naturally many thousands of dollars. This is just one big expense that’s looming for us; one that we hope to secure a grant for.
As of August 15th we’ve made one bank deposit this month; and that was for $1,378. Our monthly expenses are averaging $27,000. Fortunately you, our faithful supporters, typically make up this deficit in December. For many years, December donations paid for January through April. Unfortunately, for the past few years, December support has had to “go back” and pay for the previous 4-5 months. With our rising operational costs, this may be the year we must delve into our “nest egg” for the first time. It would seem as though the “rainy day” has arrived.
We are doing more to save animals than ever in the past. Our “forever residents” receive the best of care with current staffing. We’ve rescued 131 puppies this year, and through our collaboration with LifeLine in Colorado, all have been altered, fully vaccinated and found adoptive homes. We consider this “side” of our mission to be one of the most important, considering how many offspring these animals would produce.
Our Roxanne South does a great job, getting puppies settled in here at ARFhouse while they wait for her to transport them to Colorado. She makes certain all get their vaccines, worming, flea/tick treatment, etc., and keeps records on every puppy so that they are ready on the targeted day. On that day, she typically picks up the big van, and loads anywhere between 15-18 puppies at 3:30 a.m. in order to meet LifeLine’s transport person in Amarillo at 9:00 a.m. A labor of love (heavy emphasis on the word “labor”). She would tell you she also loves what she’s doing. Making a difference. Needless to say, this part of our mission requires a substantial sum of money. You can help us continue to care for the animals that will be here for life, as well as our “puppy mission”.
We are making a difference. But we need your support to continue to do this.
IT HAS FINALLY HAPPENED!GRAYSON COUNTY HAS BEEN ADDED.
WE ARE ELIGIBLE!
Please mark your calendar and donate to Animal Refuge Foundation on North Texas Giving Day. Make our first year one to remember!
Be a PalARFhouse offers a monthly sponsorship program. We call it Be a Pal. It allows you to virtually “adopt” the dog of your choice from among the many deserving dogs in our care. For a monthly donation of $20 deducted automatically through PayPal, you can help support a dog. In return you will receive a quarterly photo and personalized letter from your Pal with updates.
We have set a goal of 1,000 sponsors. As you must know, the cost of caring for each dog far exceeds $20 per month, but that amount will help us more than you know. Cost of care includes veterinary visits for illness or injury, annual vaccines, flea, tick, heartworm prevention and food, to name a few things. Monthly operations cost at ARFhouse is approximately $30,000. The need continues to grow. There are so
many dogs in need. We don’t want to turn any of them away. You can help.

A friend and advocate of ARFhouse passed away on May 18th this year. Cassie had a fierce love of the dogs. At the time of her death, she had been working diligently, securing gifts for the Golf Tournament Auction, as well as signing up sponsors. She was engaged on a daily basis with our Deb Blakeney who, as the tournament organizer, welcomed Cassie’s support and enthusiasm to raise money and awareness for this event. Deb tells me that no one worked harder than Cassie. We are grieved at the loss of our friend. Her son, Greyson, wanted to do something for ARFhouse because he knew it would please his mother, so he donated her Volkswagen Cabrio to us. We believe she would be pleased.
