HOME SWEET HOME: The Dodgers open their 55th season at
Dodger Stadium with a sold-out game against the D-backs following a
4-3 season-opening road trip to San Diego (3-0) and San Francisco (1-
3). Los Angeles has gone 29-25 in home-openers at Dodger Stadium
since 1962, including winning seven of its last eight. Today’s game
will mark the fifth meeting between the D-backs and Dodgers in Los
Angeles’ home-openers, with the Dodgers going 3-1 in those
matchups, including wins in 1998 (9-1), 1999 (8-6 in 11 inn.) and
2010 (9-5) and a loss in 2003 (6-4 in 12 inn.). Following three games
against Arizona, the Dodgers will conclude their six-game homestand
with a three-game series against the Giants this weekend.
In 2015, the Dodgers posted the best home winning
percentage in Los Angeles history and the fifth-best mark in
franchise history at .679 (55-26). The 55 home wins tied for
the most in LA history along with the 1980 club (55-27).
Last year, the Dodgers went 13-6 against the D-backs,
including an 8-2 mark at home. Dating to 2014, Los Angeles
has won 15 of its last 19 home games against Arizona.
Los Angeles is opening the season with 13 consecutive
games against divisional opponents after posting a .605
winning percentage against NL West clubs last year (46-30).
The Dodgers are attempting to become the first team since
the National League West began in 1969 to win four
consecutive division titles. The only teams with three-in-a-
row are the Dodgers (2013-15) and Braves (1991-93).
SIMPLY THE BEST: It’s official, Dodger Stadium’s new address is
now 1000 Vin Scully Avenue following yesterday’s dedication
ceremonies. Scully, who is in his 67th and final season in the broadcast
booth for the Dodgers, will also be honored today during pregame
ceremonies and throughout the 2016 season: Tuesday, May 10 (7:10
p.m. vs. Mets), with Vin Scully Avenue T-Shirt night presented by
Mercedes Benz of Southern California; Tuesday, September 20 (7:10
p.m. vs. Giants), with Vin Scully Bobblehead night, and Friday,
September 23 (7:10 p.m. vs. Rockies), with Vin Scully Appreciation
Night to include special pregame ceremonies, opportunities for fans to
thank and pay tribute to Scully and Friday Night Fireworks presented
by Denny’s set to Scully’s top calls of his career.
REINFORCEMENTS: Earlier today, the Dodgers reinstated catcher
Yasmani Grandal (right forearm tightness) and infielder Howie
Kendrick (strained left calf) from the 15-day disabled list, while
placing infielder/outfielder Scott Van Slyke on the 15-day disabled list
(low back irritation, retroactive to April 10).
Grandal started three games at catcher and one at DH during
a rehab stint with Triple-A Oklahoma City, going 3-for-9
with a homer and three RBI. He appeared in eight Spring
Training games for the Dodgers (last: March 21), going 6-
for-16 (.375) with two doubles, a home run and three RBI.
Kendrick went 5-for-15 (.333) with a stolen base, three
doubles and four RBI in a four-game rehab appearance with
Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, starting games at DH (one
game), second base (two games) and third base (one game)
with the Quakes. He batted .261 (6-for-23) with a double, a
triple, a home run and two RBI in eight Spring Training
games with the Dodgers, last appearing on March 22.
The Dodgers began the year with 10 men on the disabled list
(the same number as they have now with the addition of Van
Slyke), which was likely the most to start a season in baseball
history. Since records were readily available in 2002, the
previous high was nine by the 2012 Boston Red Sox.
Yesterday, the Dodgers optioned infielder Micah Johnson to
Triple-A Oklahoma City.
THE SKIPPER: Dave Roberts, 43, was named the 10th manager in
L.A. history (28th in franchise history) on Nov. 23, 2015 and previously
served as the Padres’ bench coach from 2014-15 and first base coach
from 2011-13. Los Angeles Dodger managers have gone 6-2 in their
first home-openers, as Walter Alston (1958, W), Tommy Lasorda
(1977, W), Davey Johnson (1999, W), Jim Tracy (2001, W), Joe
Torre (2008, W) and Don Mattingly (2011, W) were victorious, but
Bill Russell (1997, L) and Grady Little (2006, L) suffered losses.
GETTING OFFENSIVE: Dodger hitters are off to a hot start,
ranking third in the NL in team batting average (.288) and ranking
fourth in the league with an average of 6.0 runs per game under the
tutelage of first-year hitting coach Turner Ward. Ward will be facing
his old club for the first time today, after serving as Arizona’s hitting
coach in 2014-15 and the club’s assistant hitting coach in 2013.
Corey Seager has hit safely in all seven of the Dodgers’
games this year after going 2-for-5 with an RBI Sunday to
extend his overall hitting streak to 10, which dates to Oct. 1,
2015. Seager is batting .375 (15-for-40) with three doubles, a
homer and six RBI during the run, which is still 10 games
shy of the longest rookie hitting streak in Los Angeles
history, 20, set by Tommy Davis in 1960.
Yasiel Puig had his season-opening hitting streak snapped at
six games on Sunday, but has still posted an impressive
.385/.500/.654 slashline, going 10-for-26 with two triples, a
homer and four RBI. Puig has reached base safely in in 16 of
32 plate appearances, including at least once in all seven
games.
On Sunday, Adrian Gonzalez registered his fourth multi-hit
game of the season, going 2-for-4 with an RBI to raise his
batting average to .429 (12-for-28) through seven games.
The five-time All-Star has a history of hot starts, with a
.308/.375/.536 career slashline in April, and, last year, won
the NL’s April Player of the Month award with a .383 batting
average, eight homers and 19 RBI in 21 games.
CLARK KENTA: Dodger right-hander Kenta Maeda - who
celebrated his 28th birthday yesterday - not only fired 6.0 scoreless
innings and won his Major League debut on Wednesday at San Diego,
but also blasted a solo homer in his second big league at-bat. Maeda
became the first Dodger to homer in his Major League debut since
shortstop Jose Offerman vs. the Montreal Expos on Aug. 19, 1990
and the first Dodger pitcher to homer in his big league debut since
Dan Bankhead vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates on Aug. 26, 1947. Maeda
was the third pitcher to hit a home run in his big league debut since
2000 and the first since the Nationals’ Tommy Millone on Sept. 3,
2011.
Maeda will become the second Japanese pitcher to start a
home-opener for the Dodgers, joining Hideo Nomo, who did
so 1996 and 2004. Nomo also started on Opening Day for the
Dodgers on the road in 2003 (at Arizona), while Hiroki
Kuroda made the start in the 2009 lid-lifter at San Diego.
Dodger starters have combined to go 3-1 with a 2.91 ERA
(2nd
NL, 14 ER/43.1 IP), while limiting opponents to a .168
batting average (26-for-155).
HOME COOKING: Justin Turner hit safely in five of his six games
during the Dodgers’ road trip and figures to keep it going at home,
where he’s been one of the best hitters in Dodger Stadium history
during the course of his career:
Dodger Stadium All-Time Batting Leaders, Min. 200 AB
1. Roberto Clemente .377 (120-for-318)
2. Tony Gwynn .329 (140-for-426)

4. Sammy Sosa .318 (64-for-201)
5. Justin Turner .318 (113-for-355)
6. Keith Hernandez .318 (97-for-305)
7. Howie Kendrick .316 (97-for-307)
Turner has gone 5-for-10 with three RBI in his career against
today’s Arizona starter, Patrick Corbin, and has a
.318/.400/.477 slashline in 34 games against the D-backs,
going 28-for-88 with eight doubles, two homers and 12 RBI.
