George M. Billingsley Tennis Center and Dills Indoor Stadium The inside cover features the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center, the home of 10 plexi-paved out-door courts and the site of the 2008 Men’s Tennis SEC Championships. The former Varsity Courts were rennovated into the Billingsley Tennis Center in 2008. The ren-novations include a player lounge, a plaza entry, a scoreboard for the main courts, skyboxes overlooking the indoor and outdoor courts and elevated stadium seating for the outdoor courts. Unlike many other programs acround the country, Ar-kansas’ tennis team takes advantage of facilities which give the Razorbacks an opportunity to play and practice 365 days a year, regardless of the weather. The University of Arkansas’ Dills Indoor Stadium was originally constructed in 1982, but it was extensively renovated in 2001, giving the Ra-zorbacks one of the fi nest indoor facilities in the na-tion. The stadium was re-named and dedicated on April 30, 2002, in honor of Jane Dills Morgan and Nancy Dills Lee, along with

RAZORBACK TENNIS FACILITIES

Ewell Lee, who made a sizeable dona-tion in the name of Robert “Bob” and Lucile Dills. They were early and long-time supporters of the Razor-back program. The stadium originally included just four courts, but the renovations upped that number to six. Other improvements included a new ceil-ing and insulation system, 96 new lamps, resurfacing of all the courts and six electronic scoreboards. The Dills Indoor Stadium is cur-rently undergoing further expansion for coaches offi ces, player locker rooms and training rooms.

2009 OUTLOOK The Razorbacks look to an exciting season in 2009, matching up against eight teams who were ranked in the top 25 at the end of the 2008 season, as they work to improve their own No. 50 ranking. Head coach Robert Cox believes the growth of his returning players and the addition of a promising freshman will lead the Hogs to success this year.

Senior Blake Strode, Arkansas’ top player and projected No. 1, is ranked No. 15 nationally and No. 3 regionally in singles entering the 2009 spring season and is the foundation for a solid lineup. Strode posted wins over three top 40 players in the fall of 2008, includ-ing a straight sets victory over No. 6 Arnau Brugues of Tulsa at the D’Novo All-American Cham-pionships in October. Strode advanced to the quarterfi nals of the prestigious event, automatically qualify-ing for the year-end ITA Indoor Champi-onships. “We’re expecting Blake to perform like he did in his sopho-more season when he went 7-4 in his SEC matches and 27-11 overall,” Cox said.

“Our goal is for him to close in on the No. 1 rank-ing and NCAA Championship this year while lead-ing us into the upper half of the SEC.” The addition of Matt Hogan last January gives the Razorbacks a solid No. 2 player behind Strode. Hogan is ranked No. 39 in the nation and No. 4 in the central region going into his second dual season with the Razorbacks and beat No. 81 Maor Zirkin of Drake to reach the fi nals of the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships in the fall, qualifying him for the ITA National Indoor Cham-pionships, held in November. “Matt is going to be the help we need at the top of the lineup behind Blake,” Cox said. “This will be his second time through the dual match season so he knows what it’s all about. He’s feeling confi dent about his game and his role on the team, which is important for his performance.” The remaining lineup spots will be fi lled by a strong contingent of new and veteran players, each of whom can have an impact on the Razorbacks’ season. Sophomore Chris Nott, has already shown im-provement over the last year when he won a team high 25 matches. “Chris has showed us he can play awesome ten-nis,” Cox said. “Recently, we’ve seen him play at a different level we hadn’t seen from him before. It’s very promising.” Juniors Dmitry Lebedev and Bradwin Williams are expected to see their share of playing time as well. “Dmitry has to be an anchor at the bottom half of the lineup,” Cox said. “He’s going to win a lot of

2009 OUTLOOK

matches for us this year. Bradwin just needs to use his on-court tools more effi ciently and he will be successful.” Taylor King is expected to be a force in singles and doubles, as his transformation into a solid serve and volley player gives him ex-tra weapons on the court. “Taylor’s turning heads in singles ev-ery day in practice,” Cox said. “I really enjoy watching him attack, attack, at-tack. He’s going to be a force not only in doubles but in singles. He’s going to be a top six player for us.” Added aggres-siveness is the key to success for Tyler

Tarnasky, Connor Smith and Nick Spinazze, all of whom will be called on to contribute this year. “We’ve changed Tyler’s game to be more ag-gressive and he’s taken to it very well,” Cox said. “Whenever I put Connor out on the court, I know I’ll get 100 percent from him. Nick understands his game more this season and knows what he needs to improve on to be successful at the collegiate level.” Freshman Matt Walters was ranked as high as No. 5 in the South Region during his high school playing career. Focusing on transitioning from ju-nior tennis to collegiate tennis, Walters is a strong addition to Arkansas men’s tennis. “Matt started off great in the fall season,” Cox said. “He’s lived up to his billing so far. Matt has that intangible, that Hog spirit that will help him in his career.” In doubles, the Hogs anticipate improvement over their 53-56 record last year. Hogan and Strode, ranked No. 14 nationally and No. 3 regionally, will take the No. 1 position, having racked up fall victories over No. 32 Attila Bucko and Jordan Rux of Baylor and No. 45 Chris Chirico and Wil Spen-cer from Texas A&M. Nott and King are scheduled to play on the second court and the No. 3 team is listed as Tarnasky and Williams. “Doubles is going to be much stronger this year,” Cox said. “Matt and Blake have already shown, in the fall, how strong they are as a team and they’re going to continue to get better. Chris and Taylor ended last season as the No. 2 team for us and with the rest of the team contributing, doubles is going to be a strength.”

In 21 seasons as the head men’s tennis coach at the University of Arkansas, Robert Cox has guided the Razorbacks to 266 victories, nine NCAA Tournament ap-pearances and 12 final top 40 rankings by the ITA.

To show their appreciation of Cox and his dedica-tion to the UA program, a group of former Razorbacks came together to have center court at the newly chris-tened and renovated George M. Billingsley Tennis Cen-ter named for the longtime coach.

Cox’s 24-year coaching career is filled with numer-ous accomplishments for himself, his teams and his individual players.

Arkansas has posted double-digit victories in 17 of Cox’s 21 seasons, including eight seasons with 15 or more victories. The Razorbacks have been ranked in the nation’s top 30 at some point during every season from 1980-2007 with the exception of one season (2000). UA finished with final national rankings of No. 25 in 2001, No. 24 in ‘02, No. 39 in ‘03, No. 24 in ‘04 and No. 22 in ‘06.

At Arkansas, Cox has produced seven All-America se-lections, 20 All-SEC selections and seven SWC champi-ons, two ITA national champions, two ITA No. 1-ranked singles players and one ITA No. 1-ranked doubles team.

Cox led the Razorbacks to a 12-13 finish and a No. 50 ranking in 2008, a strong comeback for a program that went 7-22 in 2007. As a result of Cox’s coaching and his players’ hard work, two Razorbacks entered the fall of 2008 ranked in the top 125. Senior Blake Strode was ranked No. 41 and sophomore Matt Hogan was ranked No. 125.

In 2006, Cox led the Hogs to the regional finals for the sixth time in the team’s last seven regional appear-ances. The Razorbacks won 18 matches that season, the most by a UA squad since 1989. Arkansas won the ITA Central Region Team Championship and advanced to the ITA National Indoor Championships. Cox, the 2006 ITA Central Region Coach of the Year, earned his 350th career win on April 7, 2006, at Auburn. The Razorbacks finished with a No. 22 national ranking.

In 2004, Cox was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year for leading Razorbacks to a 16-10 finish, a No. 24 final ranking by the ITA and into the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 for the first time since 1986. He also became UA’s all-time victories leader that year with a 6-1 victory at Hawaii on March 12. The win was his 219th at Arkansas and moved him past Tom Pucci, Cox’s coach at Arkansas.

Only the second coach in school history with 100 wins, Cox has coached seven All-Americans in Mike Brown, Tim Crichton, Euan McGinn, Tom Hamilton, Marcus Hilpert, Oskar Johansson and Adrians Zguns.

Under Cox’s guidance, Johansson became the most recent Arkansas player to capture a national title and earn a No. 1 ranking in 2001.

Cox also guided Crichton and Hamilton to the National Clay Court Doubles title and automatic berth in the NCAA Championships in 1996. Also in 1996, the partners held the nation’s top doubles ranking for most of the season and became the first Razorback pair to se-cure the top spot since Peter Doohan and Pat Serret won the NCAA doubles championship in 1982. The same duo reached the finals of the National Clay Court Championship again in 1997. For their efforts, Crichton and Hamilton earned both All-America and All-SEC honors in 1997 and 1998.

Another success under Cox was Adrians Zguns, whom Cox guided to the round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Championships, earning Aguns All-America honors and a No. 18 final ranking.

Current Razorback Strode has also flourished under Cox’s tutelage, paving the way for the Hogs in recent years. Despite a rocky team outing in 2007, Strode man-aged a top-40 ranking in singles play and earned a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship draw. Along with partner Colin Mascall, Strode also reached the NCAA Doubles Championship.

Taking the reins of the UA program in 1988, Cox turned around a team that had gone 9-16 the year be-fore and won the Southwest Conference championship with an 18-6 record. He was the 1988 ITA Region VI Coach of the Year and never let up. Cox followed with a second SWC title in 1989, guid-ing the Hogs to a 19-8 finish. Cox claimed his 300th career victory with the 5-2 win at Texas-San Antonio on March 20, 2002. Cox began his col-legiate career at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, earning All-Amer-ica honors in doubles for legendary junior college coach Fred Kniffen. While Cox was a regular in the singles lineup, he and Apache partner Ray Anders reached the finals of the National Junior College doubles championships in 1976, earning All-America honors. Cox transferred to Arkansas after his sopho-more season, and as a player for the Razorbacks in 1977 and 1978, he was a part of squads that pro-duced a 48-10 record under head coach Pucci.

After earning a business administration degree in the fall of 1978, the Palestine, Texas, native spent a year as the head pro at Willow Brook Country Club in Tyler. Cox then left Tyler to travel the ATP tennis circuit, play-ing in Europe.

Cox also earned a No. 6 ranking in 1979 among Texas men and has more than 70 tournament victories to his credit. The high point of Cox’s on-court career came when he competed in the 1980 U.S. Open mixed doubles qualifying tournament.

Cox taught at the Kansas City Country Club in Mis-sion Hills, Kan., until going to Tyler Junior College as the head tennis coach for both the men and women’s squads. During his time at TJC, Cox led men’s team to the NJCAA national championship in 1985 while the women claimed the title in 1987. The women’s team also collected a pair of national runner-up finishes un-der Cox.

For his efforts, Cox was named the National Junior College Men’s Coach of the Year and the National JC Women’s Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1987, respec-tively. In his tenure, TJC captured six regional titles and produced 31 All-America selections. When he left TJC to coach at Arkansas, Cox became one of the few coaches to coach at both of his alma maters.

Throughout his playing career, Cox received instruc-tion from many of the top tennis instructors in the country. From his start in the game under the tutelage of his father, Dr. Robert Cox Sr., and of high school coach Marley Styner, Cox not only improved his on-court talents, but also gained an intricate knowledge of tennis that aids him in coaching.

Cox has a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Tyler. He is married to the former Meredith Rooney of Little Rock. His 26-year-old daughter, Afton, is a 2004 graduate of the University of Arkansas and received her master’s degree in educa-tion in 2005. She is currently in her third year of teach-ing at Southwest Junior High in Sprindale.

2008 IN REVIEWITA RANKINGSThe Razorbacks entered the ITA team rankings positioned at No. 62 in the Feb. 20 poll. Arkansas reached a season-high No. 33 ranking (March 11) after a pair of SEC wins over No. 22 Vanderbilt and No. 55 Kentucky, and stayed at the spot for two weeks. Arkansas was ranked No. 50 in the season’s final team standings, its 13th top-50 finish under head coach Robert Cox. The Razorbacks were the No. 4 team in the final Central Region team poll.

HOGS BEAT NO. 22 VANDERBILT, NO. 55 KENTUCKYArkansas posted victories over No. 22 Vanderbilt and No. 55 Kentucky the weekend of March 7-9. The weekend sweep was the first time the Hogs had swept weekend con-ference matches since 2002 when they defeated, coinci-dentally, the Commodores and Wildcats on the road. The Razorbacks’ win over No. 55 Kentucky was just the second in 19 meetings since joining the SEC in 1992. The other win came in Lexington during the 2002 season. The win against Vanderbilt was the Razorbacks’ first win over a top-30 team since defeating then-No. 28 Tennessee on March 5, 2006.

REGIONAL RANKINGS FOR FOURPlaying at No. 1 singles for the Hogs, Blake Strode began the spring with a No. 76 national ranking. He finished the season as the No. 75 player in the nation and the No. 5 netter in the Central Region. Fellow Razorbacks Matt Ho-gan (21), Chris Nott (23) and Dmitry Lebedev (29) joined Strode in the year-end regional top 30.

SEC HONORSBlake Strode was named the SEC Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year for maintaining a 3.96 cumulative GPA. He shared the conference award with Kevin Dessauer of LSU. Team-mate Taylor King was named to the 2008 SEC Community Service Team, one of eight men’s tennis players from around the con-ference to be recognized for their efforts off the courts.

STRODE NAMED TO COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAMStrode was also selected to the 2008 ESPN, The Magazine Academic All-District Team for the university division of District IV, the second such honor for the Arkansas netter during his career as he was also recognized following his sophomore season.

STRODE NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEKFor the second time in his career, Blake Strode was named the SEC Player of the Week (March 12). The Razorback netter was 2-0 in singles action that week against two top 65 players as Arkansas defeated No. 22 Vanderbilt, 4-3, and No. 55 Kentucky, 4-2.

2008 SEC TOURNAMENT HOSTSFor the second time in program history, the Razorbacks and Fayetteville played host to the SEC Tennis Tournament, April 17-20. The four-day event was the first competi-tion held at the newly dedicated George M. Billingsley Tennis Center. Arkansas lost to Vanderbilt in a first-round thriller that was decided by a tiebreaker at No. 6 singles. Ole Miss defeated Florida, 4-1, to win the 2008 SEC Championship.

FRESHMAN NOTT HAS TEAM HIGH WINSDuring his freshman season, Chris Nott totaled a team-high 25 singles wins, ending the year on a six-match winning streak. Nott posted a 25-12 record on the year. Dmitry Lebedev was second on the team with 18 match wins, while Blake Strode and Bradwin Williams tied for the third-most win on the team with 17. Strode also finished the season with a team-high 19 doubles victories.

GEORGE M. BILLINGSLEY TENNIS CENTER DEDICATIONThe newest addition to Arkansas’ athletic facilities was completed during the 2008 season with the dedication of the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center. The $2.8 mil-lion expansion and renovation gives the Razorback tennis teams a unique facility combining the outdoor courts of the Billingsley Center with the indoor courts of the Dills Indoor Stadium. At the dedication ceremony, Vice Chan-cellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long recognized and thanked Boyce Billingsley for her family’s contribution. Billingsley cut the ribbon on the facility with members of Arkansas’ athletic administration and both tennis teams gathered around her.

HOGS NO. 14 IN TOTAL ATTENDANCEArkansas finished the 2008 season No. 14 in total atten-dance in the inaugural ITA Attendance Race. Not including the 2008 SEC Tournament, the Razorbacks averaged just under 200 fans per match. Arkansas had a season-high turnout during its Feb. 1 match against Texas.

Since 1979, the University of Arkansas tennis program has produced eight 20-win seasons, 20 top 40 final rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and 17 NCAA Tournament bids, but Razorback tennis has been successful for much longer. When Arkansas entered the Southeastern Conference in the fall of 1991, it marked a marriage of a successful program with the nation’s top tennis conference. For the oldest spring sport at Arkansas, it was yet another opportunity for Razorback tennis to rise to the challenge.

Razorback tennis established itself in 1895 as the second-oldest sport of any kind in Fayetteville, behind only football, which was started in 1894. Although the modern game didn’t get its start until the early 1970s, Arkansas’ tennis roots stem back to the mid-1950s. Under the direction of John “Red” Davis, the Razorback program established what soon would become one of the nation’s winningest traditions.

Arkansas teams have tallied more than 700 wins over the last 51 seasons. The Razorbacks have earned 19 NCAA Tournament bids, and produced 33 All-America selections and 34 conference champions. In fact, the Hogs have had 35 winning seasons since 1955, including 10 in a row from 1977-86. The modern era of Arkansas tennis started to take shape with the arrival of athletic director John Barnhill. The university’s athletic program was revitalized by Barnhill, who not

only oversaw Arkansas’ return to prominence on the football field, but sparked unmatched success on the hardcourt. The Razorback tennis team reeled off 16 consecutive wins, including back-to-back undefeated seasons, in 1956 and 1957. Standouts like Dick Reid, Randy Robertson and Rudy Martin

gained notoriety for their outstanding play during those historic seasons, including the school’s first 10-win season in 1965. David Kossover came to campus as head coach in 1968 and the Hogs promptly tallied 10- and 14-win seasons. Behind the play of Dennis Riza, David Stout, Hal Fincher, Brian Sakey and Mike Vogel, Arkansas continued to assault the record books. The momentum continued to build as Kossover led the 1971 Hogs to a 23-9 record and the school’s first 20-win season. Jeff Cook took over the head coaching

spot in 1972 and continued the standard set by his predecessor. Cook’s squads never lost more than nine matches in a season and netted the Razorbacks’ second 20-win season in 1974 (23-5). After arriving from New Mexico in 1976, Tom Pucci guided Arkansas to eight-consecutive 20-win seasons and the only 30-win season in school history. After a disappointing 12-14 inaugural campaign, Pucci and his Razorbacks never won fewer than 24 matches in his remaining eight seasons. Pucci led the Razorbacks to the first of seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances beginning in 1980. Arkansas strung together a phenomenal 206-46 record and .817 winning percentage during that span. In 1980, Arkansas produced its first All-Americans with Ron Hightower, Chip Hooper and Peter Doohan gaining recognition for the team’s school-record 31 victories. In all, Pucci’s teams would produce five All-Americans, including Hightower, Hooper, Doohan, Pat Serret and Kelly Evernden. Perhaps the biggest win in Razorback tennis history came in 1982 when the doubles tandem of Doohan and Serret clinched the 1982 NCAA doubles title. Pucci left the Arkansas program in 1984 as the winningest coach in school history, but the success he ignited continued to flame in the years to come. Pucci’s influence was felt immediately upon his departure as former Hog standout Ron Hightower was hired as the head coach. The former All-American posted 43 wins in his two seasons before giving way to Mike Patrick for the 1987 season. In Hightower’s two-year stint, the Hogs produced four All-America selections, including Tim Siegel, Richard Schmidt, Joey Blake and Bobby Blair.

Arkansas has produced 16 All-Americans since 1980.

John “Red” Davis is the father of Razorback ten-nis. Davis was the first

coach of the Razorbacks (1955-58).

Tom Pucci is Arkansas’ second all-time win-

ningest coach. Pucci re-corded 218 victories from

1976-84.

Current head coach Robert Cox was hired for the 1988 season, a decision that paid immediate dividends. A former player of Pucci’s, Cox led his alma mater to back-to-back Southwest Conference titles in 1988 and 1989. Cox has continued his success story, becoming only the second coach in school history to reach the 200-win plateau. In 2004, he passed Pucci as UA’s all-time victories leader and enters the 2005 season with a 225-192 mark.

Mike Brown, who claimed a No. 1 ranking in 1989, Tim Crichton and Tom Hamilton, who claimed a No. 1 ranking in doubles in 1997-98, Euan McGinn, Marcus Hilpert and Oskar Johansson, another No. 1-ranked Hog and the 2000 ITA National Clay Court champion, have earned All-America honors under Cox. In addition, Cox has led the Razorbacks into yet another era of Razorback tennis in the Southeastern Conference. In 15 seasons in the nation’s most competitive environment, Arkansas has collected 19 All-SEC selections, including Hilpert, Crichton, Hamilton, Daniel Pahlsson and Johansson, Nathan Price and Adrians Zguns. In 1996, Arkansas showcased its campus and facilities to its new league members by hosting the SEC Tennis Championships. The Razorbacks returned to the NCAA Tournament with back-to-back appearances in 1997 and 1998, reached the regional finals in 2001 and 2002, and made a third straight NCAA appearance in 2003. In addition, Cox has guided the Hogs to 10 top 35 finishes since 1988. In 2004, not only did Cox become UA’s all-time victories leader, the Hogs also hosted an NCAA Regional for the first time and won two matches in NCAA Tournament play for the first time. The Razorbacks beat Oklahoma State and then Tennessee to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1986.

A permanent tennis exhibit is on display in the Tommy Boyer Hall of Champions located in Bud Walton Arena.

RAZORBACK HISTORY

In 2005, despite a disappointing team finish, many individuals earned honors through out the season. Rohan Gajjar (No. 62), Matt Roberts (No. 118) and Zguns (No. 111) all found spots on the final ITA individual rankings list. In doubles play, Gajjar and Zguns ranked No. 25. Gajjar also qualified for the NCAA Singles Tournament.

During the 2006 season, the squad garnered a final ITA ranking of 22nd and recorded 18 wins, the highest season-win total in 17 years. The team made its 17th NCAA Tournament appearance and played in its 11th Regional Final match. Individually, Zguns secured a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 en route to earning All-America accolades.
