Ephesians 4:29

State Regent’s Message

Ahhhhh … August. It is mind-boggling to see how quickly summer

has come and gone. Students are scheduled to return to school

next week. DAR chapters are busy getting ready to reconvene in

September – planning programs, updating yearbooks, looking for-

ward to seeing their friends.

It was my privilege to attend the Back to School meeting at Beebe

on Monday morning and assist with the presentation of our first Hel-

en Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grant Award to Gail Vaden.

Gail is the 5th grade Social Studies/Literacy teacher at Beebe Mid-

dle School. Her proposal plans to use biographies of Revolutionary

War era famous Americans to learn to “read history critically and

create legitimate argument essays based on the books.” What a

great way to start the new school year.

Continental Congress was fun and enlightening. We had 9 members from Arkansas in attendance – 10 if we

are allowed to count Cora Burch, one of our Associate Members, who is a registered attendee from Michigan.

My report was presented during the Friday morning business session. It will be reprinted in full in the new

yearbook. There are also links on the national website that let you watch the various sessions from Con-

gress. Arkansas Daughters were recognized for their hard work, and a list of certificates that will be present-

ed at the August Board of Management meeting can be found elsewhere in this newsletter.

Speaking of useful website links: the national site offers access to information helpful for all kinds of DAR

work. The Chapter Regents Manual is a handy resource for both incoming and continuing officers. The

wording for the bylaws change adopted at Congress can be found in the updated NSDAR Handbook and the

Model for Chapter Bylaws.

Notices were sent Monday from National notifying us that the Chapter Dues Invoices for chapters are now

available in E-membership. This document is important as we begin to collect dues for the new year.

Our annual Board of Management is just around the corner on Saturday, August 26 at the Heritage Inn Center at

Harding University in Searcy. Chapter regents or representatives: please be prepared to tell us about one major

focus for the coming year. Committee chairs: brief update on activities for the coming year. If you need DAR Good

Citizen Supplies, please contact Allison Holland. Orders for yearbooks and directories should already be submitted

to Kimberly Jones. They will be available for pickup at the BOM meeting.

I am looking forward to an exciting year. DAR continues to make a difference in our communities. Thank you for

your hard work. Be safe in your travels.

added transfers and reinstatements to our increase. Thank your registrar for her hard work and support her

efforts by encouraging the prospective members and welcoming them. The new members are spread across 17

chapters. Of the state’s 43 chapters 30 have had at least one new member by application in 2017.

Honorary President General, Lynn Young has been selected as the

Semiquincentennial Commissioner and America 250 Committee

National Chair.

The United States stands on the eve of a grand anniversary – and DAR is preparing to celebrate in a big

way! The National Society has established the America 250! Special Committee to plan DAR’s involve-

ment and maximize its visibility during our nation’s upcoming 250th birthday. Much like the 1976 Bicenten-

nial celebration, this observance provides an exceptional opportunity for community involvement, positive

public relations and – most important – membership growth throughout DAR.

The U.S. Congress has established the United States Semiquincentennial Commission to begin planning

for 2026, and the nonprofit organization USA250 has been officially tasked “to organize, advocate, pro-

mote and coordinate” celebration planning for the nation’s 250th anniversary; DAR is excited to be build-

ing a relationship with them.

ALL HANDS ON DECK! ALL HANDS ON DECK!

Man Your Battle Stations, Prepare To Launch

Constitution Week – September 17- 23, 2017

Time to prepare for Constitution Week. Americans both young and old need to be educated about the importance

of the U.S. Constitution and the foundation it sets forth regarding our freedom and rights. The National DAR Mem-

ber’s only web site has information that will help you plan your Constitution Week activities. The USS Constitution

Museum serves as the memory and educational voice of USS Constitution, by collecting, preserving, and inter-

preting the stories of “Old Ironsides” and the people associated with her. They seek to create a positive, memora-

ble experience for both children and adults by inspiring within them a love for the freedom that Constitution sym-

bolizes. While there seems to be little doubt that the nickname “Old Ironsides” originated during the battle with

Guerriere, sources vary on whether an American or British sailor made the exclamation. The Museum offers

Learning Adventures Aboard “Old Ironsides”; check out this website (https://ussconstitutionmuseum.org/about-us/

mission-history/ for your adventure. Be creative and let your imagination be your guide in planning your activities

that will make learning fun.

The American Indian Chapter Chairs are encouraging their chapters to bring donations for the two schools we support. Bacone College and Chemawa Indian School “Want Lists” can be found on the web site. http://www.dar.org/members/committees/national-committees/american-indians/needs-lists

Personal items such as shampoo, deodorant, tooth brushes, tooth paste and regular size bar soap as well as laundry soap are always needed. Many of the children are away from home for the first time and phone cards can help them connect with parents and relatives.

Chapters will also start collecting donations to the American Indian Fund.

Chapter Regents please remind your chapter members about the opportunity to do

volunteer work on the Supporting Documentation Project which is part of the DAR Ge-

nealogy Preservation Committee. The volunteer can work on her computer at home

at her own time and pace on this very worthwhile, national project. After signing up

through e-Membership she will be sent data which will be put into a special online

form. Data comes from original documents which were submitted with membership

applications. This data will go to the DAR Genealogical Research System (GRS) and

will be available to registrars for use with new membership. Our goal is for each chap-

ter in Arkansas to have at least one volunteer for this project. Complete information

will be in the state handbook, or can be found online at the NSDAR Members-Only

website under the headings “Committees” then “DAR Genealogy Preservation Com-

mittee". For questions, contact Arkansas State Chairman Carole Falkner:

Pictured is the Grand Prairie Chapter DAR school display that is currently at the Stuttgart Public Library.

It depicts all of the schools included in the DAR School brochure plus one poster

highlighting the local schools & a table with various school supplies. It has been

posted for 2 weeks and will remain on display until our Constitution Week

theme. Our chapter has had the use of this window for 2 years and the library has

had a lot of comments about our displays. This year we had Spring, Memorial Day,

Flag Day & Independence Day displays. After Constitution Week we will feature

Veterans Day, Thanksgiving & Christmas.

Our June meeting was a work session featuring a presentation by DAR

State Historian Ashli Ahrens, who discussed procedures and require-

ments for archiving DAR chapter records in permanent storage in Little

Rock. Members brought chapter yearbooks, history books and files for

viewing. Pictured are, from left: Linda Bowen, Cindy Osborn, Carolyn

As with most chapters, our ladies are on

'summer break' right now, enjoying vacations

and summer visits from grandchildren! How-

ever, we first had the honor of hosting the

Caddo District Flag Day meeting on June

14. We had approximately 40 members and

guests in attendance. Several James K. Polk

chapter members, Polk county businesses,

and Susan Veal provided door prizes. We

held a silent auction to benefit Bacone College

and our State Regent's project. Entertainment

and table service was provided by the Ouachi-

ta Strings, a Polk County youth orchestra, and

catering was provided by Chicorello's. We

were also fortunate in having both our local

newspapers represented to cover this event and interview various attendees. If you would like to read the

newspapers' coverage, you can go online to mypulsenews.com or menastar.com, and search DAR.

Tate’s Bluff Chapter DAR was busy this year sup-

porting the Ouachita County Historical Society as

volunteer tour guides at the McCollum-Chidester

House Museum during the Spring Daffodil Festi-

val. Visitors enjoyed stories about Camden’s earli-

est settlers and learned about the history of the mu-

seum and it’s antique furnishings. Each volunteer

was dressed in period costume and shared their love

of history with guests from far and wide. Often such

activities lead to new members. Once such encoun-

ter a few years ago led DAR member, Mary Carle, to

ask about DAR membership. Member Teresa Harris

was wearing the pretty blue fleece jacket with DAR

embroidery that was sold a few years ago and Mary

asked how she might contact a local DAR member.

Mary did join DAR and now shares her love of ani-

mals and wildlife rehabilitation with her DAR sisters

as well as the community. Tate’s Bluff members

wipes, travel size hand sanitizers and wipes, Clorox wipes, clear nail polish,

single use eye drops, coffee, sweetener and creamer, laundry pods and

fabric sheets, snacks and lots of gum.

Marion Chapter collected items at their May meeting. Cheri Coley, Service

inventory, count and pack items to mail.

Five boxes with a combined weight of 50 pounds, and a value of about

$350 was mailed.

Little Rock-Centennial Chapter in Little Rock

Mount Holly Cemetery is a historic landmark, and it was an honor for The Little Rock-Centennial Chapter to participate in this May 28, 2017 Flag event. There were 20 participates which included members, HODARS, and friends of members. We were assigned two sections of the cemetery, and we were given flags and a map with the names of the veterans in each section.

Mount Holly has about 500 veterans from all American wars from the Revolutionary War - the first Iraqi war. The flags placed on the Sunday before Memorial Day will remain in place until after July 4th to honor all men and women veterans buried at Mount Holly.

Major Jacob Gray Chapter's entrant in the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grant for the State of Arkansas was the

winner. Gail Vaden, teacher at Beebe Middle School submitted her winning idea for how she would use the $500 grant in

her classroom. Her project description states that the students will use biographies of Revolutionary War era famous Amer-

icans, purchased with the grant to read history critically and to create legitimate argument essays based on the books.

Major Jacob Gray Chapter in Jacksonville

Honorary Chapter Regent, Jayne Spears surprised Mrs. Vaden with the announcement in front of the entire Beebe faculty

and staff at the beginning of the school year meeting in Aug. Also in attendance were State Regent Jerrie Townsend, State

Vice-Regent Junelle Mongno, Honorary State Regent Jo Ann Cooper, current Chapter Regent Sharon Bode, chapter mem-

bers Mary Ford and Lyn Hicks.

Across these United States, twelve statues titled MADONNAS OF THE TRAIL were placed by

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution during the 1920’s as a tribute to pio-

neer women who exhibited courage, faith, strength, and love as they made their way across

the country to settle the vast unknown ahead of them. A group of Missouri women in 1909

decided the Santa Fe Trail needed to be marked. In 1911, the National Society Daughters of

the American Revolution voted at Continental Congress to support this project with each state

society contributing funds. The National Old Trails Road Association, established in 1912 to

assist in marking the trails and promote the construction of a coast to coast national memorial

highway, assisted with funding related to decisions about where to place markers. Judge Harry S. Truman, as

president of the association, supported the project. The idea for a statue as a memorial to pioneer mother-

hood came from Arlene Moss of St. Louis.

August Leimbach was proposed as the sculptor and given 3 days to come up with the design. His description

of the statue portrayed this narrative: “The pioneer mother with her two children was waiting for the father at

her block-house in the wild West, for the father did not come home as he had promised. She, believing him to

be in danger, put her little child in a blanket, grasped the gun and with the boy ran out in the field to look for

the father.” The statues are each 10 feet tall on a 6 feet by 3 ½ feet base; made of Algonite stone; weigh 5

tons; and cost $1000. Local DAR chapter, where they are placed, assisted with shipping and installation

costs. The locations of the statues are: Bethesda, MD; Wheeling, WV; Beallsville, PA; Springfield, OH; Rich-

mond, IN; Vandalia, IL; Lexington, MO; Council Grove, KS; Lamar, CO; Albuquerque, NM; Springerville, AZ;

and Upland, CA. These local chapters and national groups continue to maintain each statue to be viewed by

visitors as a reminder of the challenge women met and faced in the building of America.
