Arlee Schools Newsletter OCTOBER 2016 Greetings Arlee Community: WE ARE BACK! We would like to apolo- gize for the absence of the school newsletter. With a new school year and a few position changes, we have had a brief interruption. We thank you for reading our school newsletter and if you have comments or concerns, please contact the schools. Enjoy! Missoula Children’s Theatre is back for another year of production next month. This year they will be performing Rapunzel and we will hold au- ditions Monday November 14th after school. We will be sending out more information soon. Arlee Schools is looking for substitutes for the classrooms and buses. Check out our web page-www.arleeschools.org for more info and employ- ment opportunities. We would like to remind parents to send your child with gloves, hats, scarfs and warm coats. Winter is on its way! National Honor Society news: this month the National Hon- or Society has been busy! We hosted a Red Cross blood drive (thanks, Alyce Corcoran, for heading this up) and will be starting the backpack distri- bution program this week, sending home nonperishable food items to families in need. We have been raising funds by selling hot chocolate at ten- minute break. These funds support our charitable efforts throughout the year, including supplies for blood drives, the Christmas toy purchases, and other activities. The Jocko, Arlee High School's newspaper, is back and it's online! You can find it under the Site Shortcuts on the school's homepage and at thejocko.com. Check it out! ‘Tis Basketball & Wrestling Season: Basketball and wrestling seasons are just starting for the 2016-2017 school year. With these sports starting, the new gym will have lots of use. Arlee School District is very proud of the new gym and with good maintenance it will be the showcase of Western Montana. With the bleachers and larger playing area, it could be a play- ground for younger children. Because of this, we are asking that if you bring your pre-elementary children with you to the basketball games, please keep track of them and do not allow them to run throughout the building. The bleachers are electric and can only be pulled out or put back using elec- tricity. Because of this, there are many wires attached under the bleachers that op- erate them. For safety reasons, we do not want children playing under the bleach- ers. Also with the playing floor, we are asking that fans and students do not walk on the floor with their street shoes. Please walk on the carpet runners in front of the bleachers. To be on the floor, people and players will either need to have clean non- marking basketball shoes or a shoe approved by the administration. We will be asking all visiting teams that want to shoot on the floor to have either their game shoes on or socks only. We want each and every one of you to enjoy the new gym and the upcoming basketball and wrestling seasons. The enjoyment of watching good basketball is for everybody in attendance. Thank you for your help with these issues and enjoy the season. Go Scarlets and Warriors.

‘Tis Basketball & Wrestling Season:

Basketball and wrestling seasons are just starting for the 2016-2017 school year. With these sports starting, the new gym will have lots of use. Arlee School District is very proud of the new gym and with good maintenance it will be the showcase of Western Montana. With the bleachers and larger playing area, it could be a play-ground for younger children. Because of this, we are asking that if you bring your pre-elementary children with you to the basketball games, please keep track of them and do not allow them to run throughout the building.

The bleachers are electric and can only be pulled out or put back using elec-tricity. Because of this, there are many wires attached under the bleachers that op-erate them. For safety reasons, we do not want children playing under the bleach-ers.

Also with the playing floor, we are asking that fans and students do not walk on the floor with their street shoes. Please walk on the carpet runners in front of the bleachers. To be on the floor, people and players will either need to have clean non-marking basketball shoes or a shoe approved by the administration. We will be asking all visiting teams that want to shoot on the floor to have either their game shoes on or socks only. Seeley-Swan! At Arlee’s own Hatchery Challenge cross country meet held on Mon.,

Oct. 3, our boys came in third and the girls, second. Junior Shawntaya Nelson came

she’d run before! Tashyna Matt placed 8th among the girls. Other girls who had

their best times were Frankie Wright, Ashley Potts and Naomi Plant. On the boys’

side, Jason Miller placed 10th and had a personal best that was 49 seconds faster

than ever before. Ivory Brien placed 11th with another personal best. Coach Sproull

commented, “It was a good race - I was moved by our runners. Many ran sick or in-

jured and they emptied their hearts out.”

The winning class for Homecoming hall decorations was the Sophomores with their

Candy Land theme. Good job

Sophomores! The mighty Seniors took the prize for being the “Most Spiried” class!

Congrats to Senior Brian Baker on being the “Most Spirited” Warrior at AHS last

week and to Freshman Emily Fiddler for being the “Most Spirited” Scarlet! More

congrats to Senior Alyce Corcoran for winning the Senior parking space decorat-

A good time was had by all! A special thanks to Valley Bank of Arlee for another wonderful Tail-

sound off whenever the Warriors made a touchdown! Our wonderful pep band, led by Mr. For-

News from the Junior High:

Greetings from the Junior High Staff, October, 2016

Our junior high staff would like to thank all the parents & family members who attended open house in August.

We had a successful turn out and a big thank you to Karen Hunter & her kitchen staff for providing a delicious

meal. We had our first mid-term September 29th and first quarter will end October 29th. If your child plays

sports or is in a club eligibility does apply and we will base eligibility off first quarter grades. We are proud of all

our students for adjusting to being in Junior High and working hard.

Progress Reports were sent on Monday, October 10th. Parents/Guardians, we have after school tutoring in the high

school every day, Monday – Thursday from 4:00pm – 5:30pm. Mr. Leder is available to help all students and we

encourage everyone to attend if they are struggling or are missing assignments.

We have a juice/water machine supplied by Coke. Waters are for $1.00 cents and orange/apple juice is for $1.25.

Proceeds are returned back to the junior high fund to help with cost during the year for field trips, pep rallies and

our wonderful end of year 8th grade Yellowstone Trip!

Junior High will be selling our annual yearly magazines as a Yellowstone fundraiser. Stu-

dents are asked to sell 10 magazines to help cover their cost on the trip. Seventh graders are

also included to help build the funds for their time in Yellowstone. This is the only fundrais-

er activities the junior high have during the year and it only last a couple weeks. We will start

selling magazines later this month.

The 6-8 football, volleyball and cross country sports programs are coming to a close soon and we start right in

with 6/8 boys basketball on Monday October 27, 2014. A reminder to all athletes participating in sports every ath-

lete is required to have a completed physical, concussion form, sport’s packet & purchase an activity pass in order

to participate.

And speaking of welcome, if you would like to come in and shadow your child for the day or part of a day, no

problem! Just contact Mr. Taylor at 726-3216 ext. 2300 or Mandy at 726-3216 ext. 2404 before you plan on coming

in to get approval.

The Montana Teachers Convention will be on Thursday, 10/20 & Friday, 10/21. There will be no school on Thurs-

day, 10/20. Our first Parent/Teacher conference is scheduled for Wednesday, 11/2, 4pm-7pm and again on Thurs-

day, 11/3 from 4pm-7pm. Junior High does not schedule specific times for parent visit so come right in. Report

cards will be handed out those nights then the rest will be mailed out. If you would like to schedule a specific

time to meet with the teacher during the year, please give the office a call at 726-3216 ext. 2404 or email the teach-

er to set up a meeting.

Come on out & support the students at their activities! We have an awesome, talented & smart

group of kids and them your support. All activities & events are posted on our school website on

the main calendar and the Junior High calendar on our page. Please visit us at

www.arleeschools.org then select Junior High under Departments for daily announcements & calendar for this

Counselor Corner:

Gear Up coordinators, Misty and Deanne brought interested junior and seniors to a college fair

on September 27 to The University of Montana. There were over 100 college representatives

at the fair that gave students information about their school. The fair was very successful and

the students were able to visit many colleges as far as California!

Gear Up will be bringing students on campus visits starting in October. Here is the list of colleges and grades that

will be touring:

October 6: 9th grade to Butte Tech

October 13: 11th grade to Carroll College

October 19: 8th grade to University of Montana

Senior Parents: We’ve made it! Now we need to start thinking of what we can do to help our seniors to continue to

be successful their senior year. If you haven’t scheduled your child for senior pictures, please look at different pho-

tographers around our area and at their prices. The Jostens representative will be coming into the school this Fall to

meet with seniors about caps and gowns, announcements, etc. Preparing for graduation could financially add up, so

be prepared to put some money aside for future graduation expenses. Students need to start narrowing down where

they want to attend college so we can work on their college applications and get them in before the Christmas Holi-

day. I am hoping we can accomplish all of this during the College Application night which will be held on Novem-

ber 2 from 6-8 pm in the library and we will also be having a FAFSA night on October 15 from 6-8:30 in the li-

brary. I will let you all know the details of what to bring for the FAFSA night once I receive them. (I know you

will need 2015 tax return statements for the FAFSA night for sure.)

Seniors also need to start working on their scholarship essays, resume and volunteer and community service list. I

have started emailing them scholarships and when the deadlines are. I have encouraged them to start applying since

college tuition and fees add up.

If you or your senior have any questions about graduation, college applications, FAFSA, or anything else, please

feel free to call or email me. I am more than willing to help with the process.

I am in the Junior High on Monday and Wednesday mornings and can be reached at extension 2410 and at the

High School Monday afternoons, Tuesday, Wednesday afternoons, and Thursday at ext. 2301.
