INDEX7
A Note
This report is the most comprehensive ever compiled on the coM-
plex subject of officer education and training and the Army schoolsystem. Its size (840 pp.) dictated the need for an index.
It was neither practical nor appropriate to go all the way downA through the subject matter to provide a completely definitive index,
nor was it considered necessary to give a full breakout ef singlemajor categories. Thus the user will find block entries for the ArmyWar College, for example, and the Command and General Staff Ccllege.
This should not pose a problem, for a horizontal check of a sub-ject such as electives, against a vertical check of a school, willprovide a point of intersection and focus and make it possible tosearch out detail. Cross reference will guide the user to subjectareas*
In view of the size of the report and of the indexing task, anito insure the availability of the index as promptly as possible inconnection with staffing, certain types of information were notincluded. Such details as academic departments, courses and subjects 3within schools are not provided (nor was it possible to identify allcourses listed in Tables, but only those identified in the text).Geographical locations and post names were omitted since they may bereadily found by consulting the list of schools-
The reader is advised that all officials, departments, agenciesand institutions are indexed by their titles and names derived fromnormal usage, except that the common prefix "US Army" has been droppedin the majority of cases (i.e. Combat Developments Command, but ArmyMateriel Command). Secretaries are listed under the letter S; Depart-ments under D; Chiefs under C; Deputies under D; Assistant Deputiesand Chiefs under A; Universities are listed under U in appropriateinstances, and under their respective names where indicated, forexample, University of Maryland, but Johns Hopkins University.
