QUOTE OF THE MONTH
“We cannot tell what may happen to us in the strange medley of life. But we can decide what happens in us – how we can
take it, what we do with it – and that is what really counts in the end.” ~Joseph Fort Newton~
FAN FAVORITE: Marsha Apsley has been busy
penning her third devotional book. The newest work
is titled 40 Days of Faith and Fitness for Tweens and
Teens. This volume follows the same daily
verses as the original devotional. The
content is such that it addresses the needs
and interests of young girls. The devotional
may be used on an individual basis or may
be shared with a mother or grandmother
who is reading the original work. The
devotional is designed to help young girls
discover how God sees her and learn to see
herself through God's eyes. A 13-year-old
reader said, “This is my favorite devotional because it doesn't make
me feel like a little kid. Marsha talks about things all girls go through
and gives me things to do and to think about.” This devotional as
well as the original is available locally at Three Sisters Books and on
Amazon. Congratulations and success with this edition and any
new endeavors in the future.
OCTOBER: The month of October, like May, is dedicated to the honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the praying of the Rosary. You may pray the Rosary every day but especially encouraged to do so in the month of October. We pray the Rosary on Wednesday at 5:30 at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Fields or in the parish hall if the weather is inclement. All are welcome and encouraged to join us in honoring Blessed Mary. The month of October is also the month when we are encouraged to show our appreciation to our pastor and all the clergy. Take some time this month to drop a note of thanks to a favorite member of the clergy. Pray for Fr. Mike, Fr. Paul and all priests who have devoted their lives to serving God and his people. A good way to honor our clergy and Blessed Mother would be to offer an intention for our priest during your daily Rosary.
TIME FLIES: On October 3, we
will celebrate the 6th
anniversary of Sr. Joan's
arrival here at St.
Vincent. Time seems to rush
by as each year turns to the
next.
Thank you, Sr. Joan Miller, for
our time together. Let us all
pray that this is just the start
of our mutual admiration for
one another. God Bless you
and keep you with us for as
long as He desires.

SAINT OF THE MONTH: St. Maria Soledad was
born, Manuela Torres Acosta, on December 2,
1826. She was the second of five children born to
Francisco Torres and Antonia Costa in Madrid
Spain. Manuela, was educated by the Vincentian
sisters and helped to care for the needs of the
poor in the community and by 1850 felt the call
to enter the local Dominican convent. However,
her call had to wait until there was room for her.
Her wait was short lived. In 1851 she heard of Fr.
Miguel Martinez who was trying to found a group of seven women
to minister to the sick and poor in his parish. These women would
minister to the people in their homes because they could not afford
a doctor or hospitalization. Manuela offered her services as the
seventh member of the community. On August 15, 1851 she and her
companions took their vows and she took the name Maria Soledad.
In 1856, Fr. Martinez took 6 of the sisters, who now numbered 12,
to establish another mission. Sr. Maria was appointed superior of
the order and all was well for a time. Several years later a few of the
women left the order. This left the group in a state of inefficiency
and Maria was removed as the superior. The local bishop considered
dissolving the order but was convinced to re-appoint Maria. Under the direction of Fr. Gabino Sanchez, the
order we renamed The Servants of Mary. The order continued to grow through the efforts of Sr. Maria and
Fr. Sanchez. In 1865 Sr. Maria and the order received notoriety for their dedication to caring for the sick
during a cholera epidemic.
Over the years Sr. Maria and the Servants of Mary experienced good times and difficult times but they
survived and by 1875 were called to serve in Havana. In 1876 the order finally received Papal appro val from
Pope Pius IX. Sr. Maria fell ill a few years later and passed away on October 11, 1887. She was beatified on
October 5, 1950 by Pope Pius XII and Canonized St. Maria Soledad on January 25, 1970 by Pope Paul IV.

HAPPY 50TH
ANNIVERSARY
On October 28, 2019 Kenny and
Peggy Roell will celebrate their 50th
Wedding Anniversary. Kenny and Peggy were

de Paul Church by Fr. Anthony Seger. God
Bless this special couple with more years to

ELECTION 2019:
Election Day is Tuesday, November 5. Now is the time to investigate
the candidates running for public office. Most
important perhaps, are the local elections. These officials are the ones who affect our lives the most. Make certain you know who the candidates are and their positions on the topics that concern
you most. As you make your decision, be sure to pray that you make the best selection and that those who are
elected will consider the needs of all citizens when making decisions.
BIRTH: Proud great grandma, Pat Rosenfeld, has been blessed with a new member of her family. Mason Estelle Szewczky Entered the world on August 27, 2019. Mason's mother is Abby and her father is Spencer and older brother is Samuel. May God Bless this newest addition to the Rosenfeld clan.
RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY: Sunday, October 7 is Respect Life Sunday. This
day is set aside to consider the value of each human being. All are created by
the love of God in His own image. The importance of each life is immeasur-
able. How many priests, religious, scientists, artists and everyday people’s
lives have been lost to abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia? The numbers
are staggering and mind boggling. There is good news and bad news in the
struggle to respect life. Abortion numbers are down and abortion clinics are
closing but more “abortion pills” are being purchased on line than ever before.
Several states and nations are liberalizing assisted suicide laws and tougher
abortion laws are being challenged in the courts. Please take time to pray
and offer intentions for the respect of life on this Respect Life Sunday and every day.

INDIANA CATHOLIC HISTORY: “Band of Missionaries” In 1834 Simon Brute came to Indiana and there were only three other priests to serve the entire Vincennes Diocese. The wide wilderness of the area made it difficult to minister to the needs of the Catholics. In 1835 he returned to Europe to recruit more priests. He returned with 18 men, some were already ordained and some were able to complete their education at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland. One such priest was our first pastor Vincent Bacquelin who was ordained on April 25, 1837. He was sent to serve Shelby, Rush, Bartholomew and Marion Counties. He also went as far as Cambridge City and Richmond and of course Indianapolis. In addition to all of these duties he also gave the annual retreat for the Sisters at St. Mary of the Woods. Attendees included the future St. Mother Theodore Guerin. September 2, 2019 marked the 173rd anniversary of Fr. Bacquelin's death. How honored we are that his final resting place in our cemetery here at St. Vincent Church.
FOR LIFE: Thanks to our St. Vincent golfers
