ARPS NEWS 18th JULY, 2019 CALENDAR From the Principal Welcome to Term 3 Our Albany Rise school community is very excited about the wonderful events and activities planned for this term, with oppor- tunities for students to showcase their skills across many different learning areas. We have already commenced our rehearsals for our Whole School Musical, with tickets now on sale and students continuing to learn their dances, lines, and cameoperformances. We have had a lot of interest from families offering help to create cos- tumes, props and to support the Parent Association food and drink sales on the night. It is looking like a wonderful event to look forward to! We are also planning a fantastic STEM weekduring August, with a virtual reality incursion and student learning displays. Our Annual Spelling Bee and book character parade (with an optional Spacetheme) will be held during the STEM week, along with many other great activities. Our UNSW competitions begin this term. We have already had a large number of students sign up through Compass this year. I am sure they will perform well, as per previous years. There are so many other great events on the calendar; I recom- mend parents regularly refer to our Compass or Website calen- dar to keep abreast of the events in this busy term ahead. Staffing News We welcome Ms Shelley Kearney, who is our newteacher in Grade 2I. Mrs Kearney met her class last term and has been warmly welcomed into the ARPS community. We also welcome Mr Simon Rush, who is the new teacher in 5S, following Mrs Natalie Smith who is now on family leave. CALENDAR From the Principal

Welcome to Term 3

Our Albany Rise school community is very excited about the wonderful events and activities planned for this term, with oppor-tunities for students to showcase their skills across many different learning areas. We have already commenced our rehearsals for our Whole School Musical, with tickets now on sale and students continuing to learn their dances, lines, and ‘cameo’ performances. We have had a lot of interest from families offering help to create cos-tumes, props and to support the Parent Association food and drink sales on the night. It is looking like a wonderful event to look forward to! We are also planning a fantastic ‘STEM week’ during August, with a virtual reality incursion and student learning displays. Our Annual Spelling Bee and book character parade (with an optional “Space” theme) will be held during the STEM week, along with many other great activities. Our UNSW competitions begin this term. We have already had a large number of students sign up through Compass this year. I am sure they will perform well, as per previous years. There are so many other great events on the calendar; I recom-mend parents regularly refer to our Compass or Website calen-dar to keep abreast of the events in this busy term ahead. Staffing News We welcome Ms Shelley Kearney, who is our ‘new’ teacher in Grade 2I. Mrs Kearney met her class last term and has been warmly welcomed into the ARPS community. We also welcome Mr Simon Rush, who is the new teacher in 5S, following Mrs Natalie Smith who is now on family leave. Mr Rush spent this Monday working with Mrs Smith to get to know all his students, class routines and our community.

Mrs Judy Drew is also taking leave during this week and next week, as she recovers from a recent proce-dure. We hope to see her hopping around the school by the end of next week. During the next few weeks, the following staff are able to assist if needed: Jane Capon- Acting Principal Dom McCaffrey- Acting Assistant Principal

Baby News We are excited to inform our community that Mrs Natasha Weaver has had a beautiful baby girl, Isla. All are doing well and we hope to have Mrs Weaver visit with Isla in the near future. CONGRATULATIONS!!

We also welcome a number of new families who joined Albany Rise Primary School this term. We are sure you will appreciate being part of our caring, learning-focussed and close-knit school community. Enrolments for 2020 As we begin the second semester, we also begin establishing our plans for our 2020 class arrangements, particularly in relation to our Foundation enrolments. We are eager to establish if any further enrolments are likely for 2020, as this assists our planning for staffing and resource management. This may appear early to some, but with Foundation transition sessions for 2020 starting early in Term 4, enrolment numbers must be confirmed as early as possible. Additionally, with some families from outside our zone currently seeking entry onto our school, we need to confirm their places, and this is dependent on first ensuring all our zoned enrolments are confirmed. (Parents can check if they are inside our school zone via this link: https://www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au/ Parents of students yet to enrol for 2020 are encouraged to do so, now. This helps ensure our class sizes and resource planning for 2020 are equitable and effective. If you have yet to enrol a sibling for 2020, or know of any families yet to enrol who are within our zone, please encourage them to contact the office as soon as possible. National Tree Planting & Free Dress Day On Friday 26th July, all classes will be participating in National Tree Planting Day. We have received a dona-tion of plants, and each class will be participating in planting around the school. We will also have a free dress day, with the theme of “Go green” (for a gold coin donation). This money will be put towards our school Garden Club. A big “Thank You” to Miss Smith and Ms Foley for organising. Spotlight on Teaching and Learning:

This week, or students have begun working on their new personalised goals for Reading, Writing and Mathe-matics. Through one-to-one conferences with teachers, and in small groups, students co-construct their

learning goals with their teachers so that they have a clear understanding of their next steps in their learning, and the skills they need to exhibit to demonstrate they have attained their learning goal. Students track and display their goals in various formats, including (for our junior students) on their tables, on a joint class display and in their books. For our senior students, most

goals are visible in their Dojo portfolios, with samples of evidence to back the tracking of their progress. I en-courage parents to talk to their children about their learning goals, and ask the classroom teacher if you would like to clarify your child’s current personalised learning goals.

Facilities News Over the holidays we have been busy following up a few improvements to our school facilities. These include: A new heater installed in room 5 (Grade 4P) and all other heaters checked and serviced. Some

follow up repairs are continuing with heaters across the school.

Removal of torn shade sails over the junior playground. We anticipate all sails to be replaced soon,

and before the hot weather returns.

Our front fence repairs are underway, with the new panels (once constructed and painted) to be

installed very soon.

We are also seeking the services of a bricklayer- and we are keen to source this service from our own community. Families are encouraged to let us know if you have a bricklayer in the family who is willing to do a small (paid) job for the school. Parent/Family Occupation This week all families will receive information in relation to updating their Parent Family Occupation group. This information is gathered by the Department of Education on enrolment forms when students enter the school. The data helps inform the Education Department about where and how to direct addi-tional funding for schools. It is critical that this data is accurate to ensure that we receive funding that matches the needs of our students and school community. Please assist us by returning the information

(updated as needed) promptly, even if your family’s situation has not changed. . We greatly appreciate the support of our community with regard to this request. WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Sur-vey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 22rd July to Sunday 11th August. The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek. Parents who have been randomly selected will receive a letter tomorrow (Friday 19th) with survey logon information. These families will also receive an email with the link on Monday 22nd July. We are eager to have as many of the selected parents as possible respond to the survey this year. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. Results will also be com-municated to parents through our annual reporting process. Last year we used the survey results to plan improved ways to communicate with parents, including: all classes now using Class Dojo,

parents involved in our School Wide Positive Behaviour initiative,

closed Facebook pages for all year levels,

a central payment process and events communication through Compass,

an updated website, and much more

Please speak to your child’s teacher or the office if you would like more information about the Parent Opinion Survey. Jane Capon Acting Principal
