Residents would work no more than a 10-minute walk from their homes, eliminating the need for cars within the city. The buildings, rather than being either dwellings or offices, would instead serve multiple uses, with residences, storesand offices in the same structure. The incorporation of gardens and solar heating would make the arcology all but self-sufficient.Soleri's Arcosanti

To put these theoretical visions to the test, Soleri began construction in 1970 of a prototype arcology called Arcosanti. Located 60 miles north of Phoenix at Cordes Junction, Arcosanti is projected to house 5,000-7,000 permanent residents. Progress on its construction is slow, as the project is almost entirely self-funded through the sale of bronze and ceramicwindbells, tiles, etc.

Design, construction and operation of the project is by students and volunteers in consultation with Soleri, who divides his time between Arcosanti and the Foundation in Scottsdale. Students complete a series of workshops dealing with thetheory of arcology and principles of design, construction, architecture and ecology. After completion of these courses, they may elect to remain indefinitely as volunteer or paid workers. Some of the permanent residents have lived on thesite for 25 years, and the first generation of children is well under way.

Domes have been around for centuries. What makes geodesicdomes different?

Efficiency. A sphere is already efficient: it encloses the mostvolume with the least surface. Thus, any dome that is a portion ofa sphere has the least surface through which to lose heat orintercept potentially damaging winds.

A geodesic dome uses a pattern of self-bracing triangles in a pattern that gives maximum structural advantage, thustheoretically using the least material possible. (A "geodesic" lineon a sphere is the shortest distance between any two points.)

Norman Foster (b. Manchester, England 1935) Norman Foster was born in Manchester, England in 1935. He received hisarchitectural training at Manchester University School of Architecture, which heentered at age 21, and Yale University. He worked with Richard Rogers and Sue Rogers and his wife, Wendy Foster, as a member of "Team 4" until Foster Associateswas founded in London in 1967. The "High Tech" vocabulary of Foster Associates shows an uncompromisingexploration of technological innovations and forms. The firm's work also shows a dedication to architectural detailing and craftsmanship. Their designs emphasize therepetition of industrialized "modular" units in which prefabricated off-site-manufactured elements are frequently employed. The firm often designs specialistcomponents for individual projects. Foster was awarded the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 1983, and in 1990 the RIBA Trustees Medal was made for the Willis Faber Dumas building. He was knighted in1990, and recieved the Gold Medal of the AIA in 1994. On June 7, 1999, Sir Norman will receive the Pritzer Architecture Prize. Foster and Partners currently has offices in London, Berlin, and Singapore, with over500 employees worldwide. ReferencesDennis Sharp. The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Architects and Architecture.
